FROM CAMPUS TO CORPORATE

A programme of activities to prepare for professional life

As part of the LEAP programme this year, we have put together some activities and resources to help you look ahead to the world of work, and bridge the gap between what you do at school and the skills you need to thrive in the workplace. It is important to understand that in many degree courses, internships are expected from year 1 and that you might be applying for them almost immediately. The preparation and networking you do from now on can create a stunning CV for yourself that will open many doors for you, and the contacts you make even from the age of 16 will be really critical as you navigate your way into your first job, and future jobs. It is important that everyone undertakes some work experience before leaving Benenden, either through a paid by the hour job such as waitressing, fruit picking or childcare, through volunteering and undertaking a role that might in other circumstances be paid, such as helping in a care home, or through an internship type experience within the career area you hope eventually to join. All are important and preparing properly for work experience and reflecting on it afterwards is an essential way to make the best of it and ensure you and future employers benefit from it. This booklet contains a guide as to how to make the most of these opportunities. We hope the programme between 22-26 June and the resources in the booklet will help you understand what certain roles and job types involve, some of the more conceptual and practical matters that surround work – employment law, equality and diversity, pensions for example – and help you prepare yourself, and your CV, for the future. The chart below shows you how the week works: blue rectangles are compulsory activities which all UV and V1.2 should attend;; brown rectangles are optional talks which you should consider attending;; purple rectangles are enrichment opportunities and green rectangles are unfilled slots where you can use some of the resources and hyperlinks in the booklet to extend your knowledge and skills. Some of you are using some or all of the week to undertake some online work experience or volunteer within your community Use this time to consider not only your immediate next steps, but really thinking about what matters to you. Use this worksheet to discover what you’re looking for in your career and workplace. L Tyler Executive Director: Curriculum and Professional Excellence June 2020

We have created a new area on the Careers area on the portal where a variety of career professionals have recorded talks about their jobs. When you are free during the week, or at other times, dip into this and have a listen to some of the talks. It really gives an excellent insight into what that role and job involves. This set of short films by members of the Benenden wider community sharing their “Career Journey” that will hopefully enlighten and inspire all pupils who will be very much at the forefront of the "new job market" The” videos are all approximately 15 minutes long Navigating to the videos. Preparing for Internships and Work Experience

We believe the greatest gains to be made in business and society today are psychological in nature, not

technological.” Rory Sutherland, Ogilvy

The guidance below should help you ensure any work experience you do brings you the maximum benefits. When you interview for a fulltime job, aged 22 or thereabouts, it is highly likely that you will be asked about any work experience you have had and the skills you gained from it, so having a detailed record made at the time will be invaluable. You will not regreat completing the forms below in as much detail as possible.

WHAT ARE YOUR KEY AIMS FOR YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIP?

• Finding out more about a specific industry or business sector • Finding out more about a particular role and how it fits into the organisation • Working for a charity or in the voluntary sector • Learning more about a specific skill • Using your creativity • Demonstrating your willingness to learn, flexibility and helpfulness • Showing initiative and ownership of tasks • Learning to work as part of a team • Developing your communications skills • Improving your writing skills • Improving your time-management and prioritisation skills • Learning from feedback • Learning to research and analyse information effectively • Improving your IT and office skills • Developing your networking skills when interacting with a range of people and age groups • Learning how to work successfully under pressure • Any additional aims not listed above

WORK EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIP: USEFUL TIPS

Before you start your work experience/internship: • Research the company or organisation so that you know exactly what they do • Make sure you have the contact details of the person you have been corresponding with

about the placement • Send your contact a confirmation email saying that you are looking forward to your internship • Make sure you know the office location and the best way to get there • Make sure you are on time • Check who you should ask for on arrival • Find out what the expectation is regarding dress code and office hours • If you have any medical or health issues let the company or organisation know about them in

advance

Health and Safety:

• Make sure you bring any medication you might need with you to work with you • Make sure you follow all the instructions you are given in relation to working safely • Make sure you know what to do if there is a fire or other emergency, including where your

nearest fire exit is and where you should assemble in the event of a fire • If you have an accident at work you must report this immediately to your main contact,

particularly if you require first aid

Do’s and Don’ts: Do …

• Remember the 3 Ps … Always be Punctual, Polite and Positive. • Try to learn people’s names and roles quickly so that you can refer to them in person. If

possible, research these beforehand by googling them and poring over the company’s website and social media accounts. This is absolutely expected in some sectors such as finance.

• Be enthusiastic, even if the task you are being asked to do seems boring. It’s important to demonstrate you have a positive attitude.

• Wherever possible, don’t just complete the task you have been given but try to go a little way beyond it. Look for ways to “add value”.

• Ask relevant questions, particularly if you need to clarify a task. This will show that you are interested and motivated and are thinking through the task you have been given. Prepare some questions before you go and keep them in a notebook.

• Show that you are interested if you are observing others rather than performing a task yourself. Take notes and don’t be afraid to ask questions at the appropriate moment.

• Ask your colleagues about their own career progression and what they believe are the pros and cons of working in that industry. What else did they consider? What are their qualifications and previous experience?

• Think about the networking opportunities you can build and make sure that you create a contact list for the future.

• Follow up on the internship by email thanking your contact for giving you the opportunity, and writing a thank you letter by hand afterwards as well as emailing. If they liked you they might offer you further work experience opportunities in future. Keep in touch with them.

• Set up a LinkedIn account to make the most of your new-found contacts. • Update your CV with details of your work experience and send it to people who might be

interested.

Page 17: Campus to Corporate Brochure final - Donuts · 2020. 6. 23. · Exploring!Careers:!Careers!Journeys!Videos! V1.2% and% UV% MONDAY%22 TUESDAY%23 WEDNESDAY%24 THURSDAY%25 FRIDAY%26

Don’t …

• Be late or leave early. • Play on your mobile phone or take selfies in the workplace. • Use bad language – even if other people are. The rules are different for interns! • Ask too many questions when people are clearly very busy. • But … don’t be afraid to ask for help.

EVALUATION OF YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE

• What did you most enjoy about your internship? • What did you least enjoy about your internship? • What are the key personal qualities and skills that the organisation appears to value and

require? • Which of these were you able to demonstrate yourself? • Which aspects of your work experience were as you expected and which were surprisingly

different? • Has the experience helped you to reach decisions about your future career/education? • Do you want to find out more about an aspect of the work you did? If so, what are the next

steps you need to take? • List below the people (plus their job titles and contact details) who you would like to stay in

touch with or who were particularly helpful to you.

EVALUATION OF YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIP BY YOUR EMPLOYER Please ask your employer to evaluate your work experience/internship in the following areas:

• Overall impression eg punctuality, manners, enthusiasm:

• Standard of work, tasks completed on time and to a high standard:

• Skills demonstrated eg writing, communications, organisation, attention to detail:

• Team work, showing initiative, giving “added value”:

• Suitability to a career in relevant industry/business sector:

• Recommendations for further action eg additional qualifications/courses:

• Further comments:

Keep a record of your experiences, what tasks you performed, any feedback you received (both negative and positive), contacts you made, thoughts and observations, plans for tomorrow. Copy this page as necessary Day 1: What I did What I learnt Actions for tomorrow
