Peter Vogt of Port Republic demonstrates the tradiational dugout canoe he built in 1983from a tulip poplar that was felled in a storm in his yard. Vogt uses the 550-pound canoeto educate people about the native population that lived in the region before the Europeansettlers arrived. He was paddling around the boat basin at the annual Solomons MaritimeFestival at the Calvert Marine Museum. (May, 2014)
