National Volunteer Week is a big deal at CMHA. Why? Because volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We couldn’t operate without them! The volunteers perform a multitude of functions; answering the phones, sorting merchandise at the store, and providing leadership as the board. National Volunteer Week, and volunteering in general, is also a big deal for our country. Nearly half of the nation’s population contributes their time, skills and energy to groups and organizations, especially to charities and non- profits, like CMHA. Volunteering has over a 100 year history in Canada. The Rotary Club, Kiwanis and the Lions Club were all established in the early decades of the 1900s and they paved the way for mainstream volunteerism. The popularity of volunteerism can be seen in one of its latest trends: voluntourism. This is a form of tourism where individuals travel either within their country or globally and pay to engage in voluntary work. The volunteers say it’s all worth it, for volunteering provides many benefits. CMHA volunteers also speak of the positives of volunteering. Here are some comments from our store volunteers: "I like the social aspect, as I am a people person. I have been volunteering since I was a young girl, it’s in my nature." "I am a people person. Getting out helps with my depression." "It keeps me busy & gives me purpose." "It's a fun & happy atmosphere." "I like to give back to my community." “Volunteering helps my well-being. It gives me confidence and new skills.” “I volunteer for many reasons, but the most important one is that it gives my life meaning & purpose.” “Volunteering helps me meet people and make new friends.” Volunteering is a win-win for all. While contributing to your own wellness and helping out in the community or supporting a cause you believe in, you are making a difference in society when you volunteer. Thank you for your active citizenship, engagement, and benevolence. CLUBHOUSE NEWSLETTER Calendar Inside Bravo Volunteers!

My Time at Okanagan College by Shev

The college is not all about just learning, it’s about expanding your options, like job search and what a person would like to do in the near future. Clubhouse visited the college in March during the PACE-program guest day and we got to hear from the students who are part of that program. The students spoke how the college helped them broaden their views and explore the options and opportunities that are available in the community. I really enjoyed when the staff explained how the college works. I also liked that they gave us a tour of the college. If I rate the college, I’d give the staff 100% for being helpful in answering all our questions. Years ago, I felt intimidated going to the college, but this time I felt relaxed and welcomed by all. The visit to the college made me want to continue my education. I might enroll in some courses in the fall.

Benefits of Volunteering

Lonnie started as a casual with CMHA in 2003 working at 4th Avenue, the Thrift Shoppe and the Clubhouse followed by permanent part time status in the three areas, full time at 4th Avenue and full time at the Clubhouse, primarily taking over the Kitchen when Lee retired.

Lonnie has seen a number of changes over the years, the most positive being

More people talking and being proactive about mental illness

People not being so scared of mental illness

People not being so upset about their mental illness and knowing that they can come to the clubhouse and talk openly to staff and other participants; and can use the CMHA as a stepping stone for support and additional resources.

Lonnie would like to see the Clubhouse offer more workshops so that participants can continue to build on their skills.

Lonnie’s immediate future is going to include quilting, gardening and to spend more time with her family and friends. She is going to take the summer to ponder what else is in her future … volunteering, new friends, other opportunities.

Leaving CMHA will be hard … Lonnie appreciates all the

support she has received from staff and participants over

the past 15 years.
