We conclude our 2017 Concert Season with MendelSSohn’s first oratorio st. Paul, a musical masterpiece about the life of the apostle Paul. This oratorio effectively revived the oratorio as a genre and subsequently led to the Birmingham Festival’s commission of Mendelssohn’s other oratorio: Elijah. Mendelssohn’s St . Paul is deeply inspired by Bach and Handel, and after hearing it, Robert Schumann praised it as “a jewel of the present”. Even Richard Wagner, Mendelssohn’s later detractor, praised it as “a work that has shown with utter perfection what the highest bloom of art is”.

Mendelssohnst. Paul op.36

Our August concert presents CherUbini’s glorious and sublime Missa soleMnis, a truly masterful work, very highly regarded in his lifetime. This mass with its elaborate fugues and beautiful vocal writing demonstrates why the French opera composer Adolphe Adam referred to Cherubini as the “Palestrina of the 19th century”. In keeping with the festive and operatic character of the mass, this special concert also features the finalists of the 2017 Joan Carden award who will perform solo arias accompanied by our large orchestra. The 2017 winner will be announced at the end of the concert.
