kyusho = vital points

Kyusho are the vulnerable points of the human body which a karate-ka must know so that their blows can be as effective as possible. Atemi are aimed at these points. Vulnerable points are many and are known as mato. They appear all over the body along the lines or meridians used in acupuncture. When struck they can produce pain, trauma and even death. Thus the effect on an attacker can be discouraging, disabling or fatal, and may put them completely at the mercy of the defender.
