Simplified Horary Astrology by Ivy M. Goldstein-Jacobson (1960)

By Inge Lohse

Horary means question of the hour.

When you calculate a chart for the precise

moment a question is asked, the universe will

provide an answer to resolve your problem.

Astrologically speaking,

it works like magic.

Your question must be valid, ask a silly question, you will get a silly answer. Your intentions must be crystal clear.

Only then, can you get a proper response. Once you asked the question, do not change it, you are done, DO NOT try to second guess the cosmos....

It will not end well.

Sometimes it takes awhile before the question is

ready to be born.

Not to worry, the planets just need time to line up

before they can answer your question.

So.... Ask A Question.... Something important to you

for Example:

You’ve searched everywhere... You just can’t find it... Where is it ? You applied for a fabulous position – will you get the job?

So... now you have a question.

You have the chart in hand – what’s next - you ask?

Before you begin to read the chart... there are some

things to consider.....

Best NOT read the chart: If.... the Ascendant is between 0° and 3° (it is too soon to ask the question, you do not know all the facts, information is missing) If.... the Ascendant is between 27° and 29° 59’ (it is too late to ask the question, the situation has resolved itself, without your knowledge) If.... the Moon is Void of Course (making no applying aspects before changing signs, nothing will happen, there is nothing to worry about) If.... the Moon is Via Combust (between 15° Libra to 15° Scorpio, a fiery star section, rendering the significator ineffective, unable to function)

Lunar Nodes

The North Node is a benefic and has the nature of

Jupiter and Venus, assuring cooperation in the

matters ruled by the house it occupies.

The South Node is a malefic and has the nature of

Saturn and Mars impeding the progress of the

matters rules by the house it occupies.

Fortuna Fortuna brings good fortune to the house it occupies

according to how its ruler is fortified by sign and aspects. The better conditioned, the more good luck.

Fortuna becomes Misfortune if in the sign of Pisces,

the decanate of Pisces in the sign of Cancer (20}-30}) or Scorpio (10}-20}) or if Fortuna occupies the 12th house.

Fortuna is calculated by the sum of: The Ascendant plus the Moon minus the Sun

The Last Applying Aspect of the Moon reveals the outcome

Onwards.........

There must be an aspect between the two planets

(called the significators) that represent the querent

and the quested to bring the matter to a final

conclusion ...

In other words, so we get a or answer.

What if... there is no aspect, a lot of times there isn’t...

Well then... we take our fastest moving, closest visible

celestial body to earth, , as the co-ruler of

the question.

Only applying Ptolemaic aspects are used:

Conjunction Sextile Square Trine Opposition Parallel

The very last aspect the

Moon makes before she

changes signs gives the

answer to the question

The Conjunction z To a Benefic Planet is always good... bringing two significators together to conclude the matter. (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Jupiter) To a Malefic Planet is always bad... bringing losses, frustrations, arguments, injuries and failure. (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto)

Sextile is always good, an easy opportunity. Square is always bad news, very troublesome, bringing difficulties and it denies the outcome. Trine hardly requires any effort at all as it brings the matter to a harmonious conclusion. Opposition is a separating aspect with opposing forces severing all ties to the situation. Parallel denotes that it is as good as done.

The time it takes to complete the matter

Measure of Time The degrees required to complete an applying aspect

gives the time needed to conclude the matter. The significator used may be the planet representing

the querent or the quested.

If either of these significators are retrograde or making no applying aspects....

Then use the Moon as co-ruler... ( )

Things you need to know

Turning the Wheel

When the querent asks a question about himself and his affairs, we take the First House for him and the house ruling the matter he asks about.

When he asks about another person’s affairs, we turn the chart to have that person as the First House and then count forward to reach the house of the question.

If the other person inquired about is Not Designated, we take the 7th House for him and turn the chart to have the 7th house as the Ascendant.

Critical Degrees

A significator at a Critical Degree will bring the situation to a crisis Cardinal Signs: 0, 13, 26 Fixed Signs: 9, 21 Mutable Signs: 4, 17 Mutual Reception will bring help from an outsider not involved Final Dispositor can give you additional clues to confirm the outcome There must be at least three confirming aspects to support your answer.

Besieged and Under Duress

If a significator is between any two malefics (ex: Mars and Saturn) no

matter how many houses apart and no matter if they aspect each

other, it is besieged, distressed and under duress.

Refranation

If one of the significators, in any aspect, leaves the sign it occupies or

turns retrograde before the aspect is complete, it is like turning off the

lights. It is called Refranation or refraining from taking further action.

The person retires from the scene or backs out of the matter.

An Important Event in the Past Check the last Planet the Moon passed over...... If it is

retrograde, the person was adverse to taking the action

The nature of the event is reflected by the planet:

The Sun: promotion and publicity Mercury: coordination

Venus: cooperation Mars: denotes force Jupiter: travel

Saturn: organization Uranus: reorganization

Neptune: a scheme Pluto: complications

Example Horary Questions

Querent is the Sun. Money is Mercury Retrograde, in Sag., in the 5th , NNW corner of house, SE side of room mid-level. Moon last conjunct Neptune, a malefic. This doesn’t look promising for finding the money.

Venus/Saturn are in Mutual Reception. Fortuna is in 4th of the End of Matter. Sun will conjunct the still Retrograde Mercury.

When transiting Mercury (now direct) again reached 16 Sag, the money was found in a dresser (Venus) in a wallet (Saturn) while looking for something else completely.

Querent is Saturn and Uranus in Mutual Reception with Neptune. There is no aspect to the missing house cat ruled by Mercury in the 8th WSW intercepted in Libra W. (hiding) Last aspect of Moon is a sextile to Pluto in the 12th in Sag. Venus in dignity, is co-ruler of cat with Mercury

Window was open, cat jumped out. She was found by the dog under a pile of boxes (Libra) just west of the house , scared stiff.
