    B.W.T.S RETROFIT INSTALLATIONS

    March 31st, 2015 B.W.M. Summit

  • ABOUT US Founded in 2009

Since 2011, we have devoted many man-hours to investigating BWTS technologies and their installation on board various types of ships.

We employ presently 8 engineers of various levels of expertise and experience, who are almost exclusively occupied in the BWTS related works.

  • TECHNO ECONOMIC STUDIES

    www.argonavis.gr

Many different parameters should be assessed, in order to shortlist the BWTS that match the requirements of a vessels owner/operator.

The studies are a tool for: Fleet analysis Becoming familiar with different technologies Get and evaluate offers and technical specifications Calculate CAPEX & OPEX Pre-select BWTS

  • SURVEYS ON BOARD & 3DLS

    www.argonavis.gr

A survey on board should be performed, in order availability of spaces and other in service requirements to be assessed.

A 3DLS is: A fast process which does not interrupt vessels

normal operation. It eliminates most of the limitations connected

to manual measurement. The 3D laser scanning output (point cloud)

provides an accurate picturing of the space, which can be used for integration with BWTS 3D models.

  • FEASIBILITY STUDIES

Includes 3D modelling of pre-selected systems equipment and associated piping.

Proposes ways for the system to be fitted onboard before buying the equipment and compares the different options.

Assists the evaluation in case the owner has shortlisted more than one BWT system.

  • FEASIBILITY STUDY EXAMPLE

  • ENGINEERING STUDIES They follow the selection of the system and the location of installation and include:

Piping isometric drawings and materials list. Modification of all existing drawings (piping,

electrical, structural, outfitting), including all required calculations.

A file submitted to vessels Classification Society for approval.

    Technical specification of retrofit works.

DURATION: UNKNOWN 2 WEEKS (31 WEEKS FROM THE BEGINNING)

  • GAINED EXPERIENCE 37 surveys and 3DLS on board ships of various types and designs.

Assessment of the retrofit installation of 12 different BWT systems on 22 different ship designs.

1 Class approved engineering study & 5 outline installation specifications for BWTS retrofits.

  • ENGINEERING CHALLENGES

    www.argonavis.gr

  • THE FOOTPRINT There is a big difference when comparing the footprint given by the vendors with the space required after installing equipment with additional piping.

  • THE NEW PIPE ROUTING Only through 3DLS it is possible to discover the proper routing for connecting existing piping with the BWTS.

  • THE SUPPORTING A lot of equipment in the way of structural elements, which have to be used for proper supporting of the new equipment, has to be removed.

Wet weight of filter is about 7 tones.

  • THE PRESSURE DROP The BWTS will be installed at the discharge side of a not new ballast pump and will increase the total pressure drop of the ballast system.

Calculated maximum P is about 1 bar.

  • THE MAINTENANCE SPACE During design the minimum space required for service / maintenance of each equipment should be taken into consideration.

  • VENDORS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS The detailed installation guidelines provided by BWTS vendors should be taken into consideration (however sometimes they are not provided at all).

  • THE TRANSPORTATION It is not always feasible to transport and maneuver the new equipment to the selected installation location without modifications.

  • RETROFIT APPROVAL ISSUES

    www.argonavis.gr

  • PLAN APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS Each retrofit

installation must be approved by vessels Flag and Class.

Guidelines for the BWTS installations by Classification Societies have been issued.

Due to limited number of installations various issues which have been raised should be further discussed.

  • ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED

    www.argonavis.gr

What is the minimum required redundancy for a fitted BWTS?

Which are the approval or survey procedures for accepting ballast pump modifications and upgrades?

Is the assessment of the pressure drop in the ballast system required to be reviewed during plan approval?

Is installation of a BWTS that uses or produces chemicals accepted inside engine room, or a separate compartment is required?

  • ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED

    www.argonavis.gr

Is installation of a BWTS that uses or produces chemicals accepted inside the steering gear room?

How sampling in vessels with submerged ballast pumps is performed?

How the overflow of ballast tanks containing active substances is controlled?

Which are the requirements for modification of pre-2007 tankers to post-2007?

  • ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED

    www.argonavis.gr

How a ship specific installation approval by vessels flag is related with retrofit plan approval?

How it will be verified during service that the installed BWTS maintains the type approval status?

How operational limitations can be addressed in the revised Ballast Water Management Plan? (i.e.: is combination of ballast exchange with ballast treatment going to be accepted in certain conditions?)
