Last Updated Wednesday, 18 January 2017 Page 1 Assistant Mayors Officer Casual Assistant Mayors Officer Sept 2005 Dec 2006 to Dec 2006 Aug 2011 The Assistant Mayors Officer position was my first full time position after obtaining my business degree in June 2005. My main tasks where to assist the Mayor and Assistant Mayor manage their duties and responsibilities during there year in office. I worked in the office processing invitations, writing correspondents, answering emails, cleaning mayors Parlour and regalia. I was also responsible for securing the chains and mace and was full key holder to the town hall. I also had to deliver the Mayor and Mayoress to multiple functions over there time in office. I had to drive them to their destination in the mayoral vehicle (BMW 7 Series). I also had to lead town hall visitor groups (School visits and adult groups), around the town hall and deliver a full 30 minute presentation on the history of the town hall and the workings of local politics in the council chambers. I also had to attend council meeting and announce the Mayor into official meetings and Carry the mace. I was also a member of The Guild of Mace-Bearers. I had to follow strict protocols at official mayoral events. I got to visit lots of functions in and around Blackburn which ranged from community events, arts productions, charity events, official openings, town twinning and many award ceremonies. As well as being town based events some events were regional and included other mayors from other authorities. This job introduced me to the civic functions of local government and educated me on how local government worked, with local businesses and partners. I also worked with the Mayors Officer to stage some of the town’s largest events including the Condalessa Rice Visit (American Secretary of State), Russian Ambassador Visit, Queen and Duke of Edinburgh Visit etc. I worked full time in this position for 15 months but carried on working on a casual basis for a further 5 years. Key Achievements: Attend with Mayor all functions whilst on duty to transport them Maintenance and cleaning of car, parlour, council chambers and regalia Admin duties in relation to invites and correspondents, booking in diary and working out rotas, answer emails and telephone Working unsociable hours with late night duties Deliver Junior Citizenship project – tour of town hall to school children visits – talk about local democracy town hall Attend main council meetings as macebearer Work with festival and events team to deliver civic events including Mayors Ball, Mayor at home, town twinning.
