BUSWORLD KORTRIJK KEEPS ON GROWING You can be forgiven about not wanting to think of events in the chilly Belgian autumn when you have not enjoyed the summer season, but no one can stop the clock or the calendar! Busworld Kortrijk will be held in the Exhibition Centre in Kortrijk from 21 to 26 October. The smallest hall has been demolished since the 2003 exhibition and replaced with a new and much larger hall, giving more space than ever before. Even so, temporary tented pavilions will be added at the front of the Exhibition Centre to cater for the unprecedented demand for stand space. As we closed for press, Mieke Glorieux reported that all available stand space had been booked and some potential exhibitors were bound to be disappointed. Some of the largest exhibitors have asked for more floor space than previous years, because they will use Busworld Kortrijk to launch new models. The timing of Busworld Kortrijk could hardly be more perfect. Euro 4 engine emission limits come into effect for new models in October 2005 and for existing models by October 2006. There are likely to be record numbers of new models and many other technical, material and commercial innovations. The organisers of Busworld Kortrijk confidently believe that, once again, the numbers of visitors will reach record levels. In 2003, 24,224 professional and trade visitors came from 105 different countries. With the experience built up at fiveBusworld Shanghai exhibitions, weare sometimes asked if Chinesemanufacturers will come to Europe –and when.

It is not an easy question to answer. The signals coming from some ofthe main players in the Chineseindustry are mixed. It was noticeableat the last Busworld Shanghai thatsome of the leading manufacturershad recruited bright younggraduates, mainly female, who arefluent in English. They have beentaken on to help develop exportactivities.Their employers believe it is easierto take someone who has acquiredproficiency in a foreign language andgive them the necessary levels ofcommercial and technical training, rather than expecting some of theirtechnical people to come up tospeed in foreign languages. Thereare now more pupils learning Englishin China than there are in the UnitedKingdom!

The Chinese have also watched howEuropean, Japanese and Korean busand coach builders have approachedthe Chinese market, working withtheir joint venture partners. Theyhave established parts and servicenetworks in the main cities and willexpand those networks with the

growing numbers of their vehicles incirculation. They have emphasisedthe importance of regular servicing,at agreed intervals, and of usinggenuine parts.

While some of the leading Chinesemanufacturers recognise theimportance of this strategy, othershave tended to sell their productsand forget them. Their vehicles aresimple and unsophisticated, therefore repairs can be carried outby customers and workshops allacross the country. That is part ofthe problem of recognising Chineseexport activities. The range ofproducts that they produce for theirdomestic market vary from verysimple truck-derived buses with highfloors to relatively sophisticatedvehicles that would not be out ofplace in Western European markets.Of Western Europeanmanufacturers, probably onlyMercedes-Benz can offer such awide range, but their low-costproducts are built in countries likeBrazil, with Turkey offering mid-priced premium vehicles and, at thetop end, the factories in Germanyoffering buses and coaches atquality and price levels rarely seen inChina.

Most export sales from China havefallen into one of two similarcategories with the sameexpectations. Either they have been

made to neighbouring territories, forinstance, Siberian Russia, wheremany customers are closer toChinese suppliers than the factoriesof the Russian bus industry, or theyare to customers in developingcountries, where initial price is themost important factor.

The leading Chinese builders nowrecognise that, if they are to besuccessful in mature and developedmarkets like those in WesternEurope, they will have to investheavily in parts and service support. They can mitigate that to someextent by using some WesternEuropean content, but that will pushup their prices and take away someof their competitive advantage.

Engines will have to meet Europeanemissions legislation, but customerswill also expect other WesternEuropean components in thedriveline.

The Xiamen King Long UnitedAutomotive Industry Co has madethe most progress in Europe so far.Nearly 80 buses, built to an overalllength of 11 metres, have beensupplied to customers in Malta as

part of the Government’s plans tomodernise the local bus fleets.Malta was renowned for its veryelderly and colourful buses, but theywere hardly user friendly.

The King Long vehicles have a lowfloor from the front entrance to apoint shortly ahead of the rear axle.

Power is provided by a Cumminsengine mounted vertically in line atthe rear, driving through a ZF fullyautomatic gearbox to a conventionalrear axle. Other features include fullair suspension.

It is relatively easy to support a fleetof buses on an island, because they

However, at the beginningof June, after several months ofrumours, a British importer finallyunveiled the first right hand driveKing Long luxury coach. It receivedfavourable reviews in the tradepress. The appearance was quiteEuropean, with a styling feature oneach side inspired by Setra’s LaLinea, and a rear aspect with astrong hint of Irizar’s PB range.

The King Long coach was pricedcompetitively, but not aggressively.Coach customers have to think notonly in terms of initial purchaseprice, but also residual value. If theywant to trade in a coach for a newmodel four or five years in thefuture, what will that vehicle beworth?

Coaching is almost a fashionbusiness. For some customers, thepurchase of a new coach is astatement of style. The King Longcoach does not have the “WOW”factor that makes it stand out fromthe European crowd. Indeed, it isalmost the opposite, because it canmerge quite easily with manymodern European coaches.

It is unlikely that there will be a rushof Chinese vehicles into Europe. Thecost of compliance with ourregulations is high, and many newskills have to be learned. The KingLong coach for the British markethad to comply with the stability, ortilt, test. Evidently, when that was
