Day 06, OCT. 20, 2012 : YOGYAKARTA Excursion
Breakfast at hotel. Yogya Full Day Tour starting with a visit to the
Borobudur temple, breaking the morning scene. The Borobudur
Temple complex is one of the greatest monuments in the world.
It is of uncertain age, but thought to have been built between
the end of the seventh and beginning of the eighth century
A.D. For about a century and a half it was the spiritual centre of
Buddhism in Java, and then it was lost until its rediscovery in the
eighteenth century. In 1991,
Borobudur was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The
structure, composed of 55,000 square meters of lava-rock is
erected on a hill in the form of a stepped-pyramid of six
rectangular storeys, three circular terraces and a central stupa
forming the summit. The whole structure is in the form of a lotus,
the sacred flower of Buddha. Besides being the highest symbol of
Buddhism, the Borobudur stupa is also a replica of the universe. It
symbolizes the micro-cosmos, which is divided into three levels, the first level of which is man's
world of desire influenced by negative impulses; the middle
level, the world in which man has control of his negative
impulses and uses his positive impulses; the highest level, in
which the world of man is no longer bound by physical and
worldly ancient desires. It is said that if you put your arm
through one of the bell-shaped stupa and can touch the
stone within, you will have your wish come true. See Merapi,
unspoiled - original and real village life, where people carry
their loads on their backs while at work. Experience a variety
of tropical plants and fruits, birds, giant spiders, unique vegetables and the beautiful landscape
in the cool mountain air.
On the way back to the hotel, explore Mendut and Pawon temples, known for their great history
and philosophy, located near the Borobudur temple. The next stop will be a visit to the "Kraton",
the magnificent palace of the Sultan of
Yogjakarta. The Bird Market of Ngasem and the
Tamansari (Water Castle), will be your next stop.
Tamansari was originally a recreation garden or a
resting house for the Sultan and the royal family.
The other resting houses: Warungboto, Manukberi,
Ambarbingun, and Ambarrukmo functioned as
places for vacation and meditation for the royal
family. They were also used as a hiding place for
