Kate had seen Bus #4lots of times. Itwas the bus her older sister Sara tookto school every day. Sometimes Kateand her mom walked with Sara to thebus stop at the end of their street. Kateand her mom would wave as Sara rodeoff on the bus.
But this year was different. This yearKate would ride Bus #4, too.
On the first day of school, Sara andKate got dressed for school and had abig breakfast. Then they left for thebus stop.
"Remember what you practicedwith Mom and me and do what I saY,"Sara said.
Kate nodded and followed Sara alongthe sidewalk. She wanted to balancealong the edge of the curb, but Sarawould not let her. "lt is too dangerous.
You could fall into the road and get hitby a car!"
Kate frowned. Sara was no fun.
When they got to the bus stoP, Katestarted playing with some kids whowere throwing a ball across the street. But Sara made her stop. "Never play inthe street! A car might not see You,"Sara said.
When Kate saw the bus coming, sheran to the curb to be the first in line.
"Stay back, I(ate!" Sara called. "Wehave to keep out of the danger zone!"
Why does Sara tell Kate notto balanee on ttre curb?
Why does Sara tell Kate notto play in the street?

Now Kate was really mad. Sara wouldnot let her have any fun!
Just then, Kate heard some tiressqueal. She turned and looked.A boy who was still playing almostgot hit by a car!
"That was close!" Sara said."See why I did not want you playingin the street?"
Kate felt scared. That could havebeen her!
Kate decided she better listen toSara. She did not want to have anotherclose call.
When they got on the bus, Kate dideverything Sara said. There were lots ofthings to remember! But Kate wantedto show Sara she could do it. On theway home that day, Kate followed allthe rules.
At home, Mom wanted to know allabout Kate's first day on the bus.Kate worried that Sara would tell her
about Kate's close call and the timesshe wanted to play instead of followthe rules.
"fu[s11-" Kate started to explain.
"She did great!" Sara cut in. Shesmiled and winked at Kate. "Youlearned a lot today, didn't you, Kate?"
Kate smiled and nodded. Sara wasright. She had learned a lot. Kate feltlucky to have such a good sister."And, Mom," Kate said, "Sara wasa great teacher!"
What does Katelearn aboutplaying inttre street?
Why does Katedeeide strestrould listento Sara?
