Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and

procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for

each Federation Festival. 2. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child

Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers, including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

3. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival.

4. All Festival stewards wear a name badge. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a Festival name badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

5. For the duration of the Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils/vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils/vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, performance, practice and changing areas that may be provided.

6. No unauthorised photography or video recording is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos.

7. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

8. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and on our website. By completing and signing the entry form (or ticking the appropriate box for online entries) all parents /guardians /carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year. The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals. We recognise that: the welfare of the child/young person is paramount all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage,

religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy: to provide protection for the children and young people who participate

in our festivals, including the children of festival members to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should

adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm.

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by: valuing them, listening to and respecting them adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe

working practice for staff and volunteers recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are

made sharing information about child protection and safe working practice

with children, parents, staff and volunteers sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know,

and involving parents and children appropriately providing effective management for staff and volunteers through

supervision, support and training. The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

THE GEORGE FENTON & ANNIS WATSON AWARDS: The George Fenton Trophy will be awarded to the most promising entrant under 19 years in the Shakespeare classes - i.e. class 38, 39 & 40. The adjudicator's decision will be final and the trophy cannot be won on a further occasion by the same competitor. A book token to the value of £10 will also be awarded as a result of a bequest by the late Miss Annis Watson.

WHAT CAN I WIN? - Speech & drama

OUR VENUE

Burnley Campus is slightly out of the town centre. Please see

www.burnleyfestival.co.uk for a map. It is easily accessible from the

M65 via the A6068.

There is plenty of free parking at the venue.

You will be performing in bright modern classrooms or lecture theatres

with raked seating. Our accompanists use digital pianos.

The college runs its own refectory serving light snacks throughout the

day. There is ample seating both there and elsewhere on the ground

floor. A lift and stairs give access to upper performance rooms.

Admission for all days of the festival is £3 for adults per day - under 14s

and competitors free. Your guests are very welcome and we do hope

you will enjoy listening to other performers when you are not performing

yourself.

c SPEECH : THE LAWRENCE HERBERT TROPHY. Each adjudicator at Burnley Festival will nominate the best performance he/she has heard during each session (Classes 20, 21, 22, 64 & 65 are not eligible). These nominated performers will compete against each other at the end of the Festival’s competitions. Failure to do so will forfeit any right to the prize. The winner will be awarded the Lawrence Herbert Trophy, the Festival’s premier trophy. A previous winner will not be eligible with a current performance in the same section.

The Festival is organised by several teams of enthusiastic volunteers.

When choosing pieces please ensure that it does not exceed any time limit stated for the class. Marks will be deducted if the time limit is exceeded (see point 2g, page 18, for time penalties). You are also reminded that pieces must not contain any language or material

which is likely to cause offence to the audience.

WHAT I NEED TO DO at the festival

2 AT THE FESTIVAL a. The use at any time of video recorders, any kind of camera, mobile

phones or audio recorders is forbidden b Performers must use a published copy of the music/text (not a

photocopy) in all own choice and set piece classes. Prior to a performance, a copy of own choice material must be handed to the Adjudicator’s Secretary. This may be a photocopy provided you have purchased a copy of the piece, and the publisher is on the list of those that have signed up to the Music Publishers’ Association ‘Code of Fair Practice’. Music for the Adjudicator must be complete, totally legible, fastened together and the appropriate page in a volume marked. All photocopies will be destroyed after the festival.

c. Any performer not available by the end of a class will be considered absent.

d. Any ‘coaching’ or other gesticulations to performers is forbidden. e. No food or hot drinks to be taken into competition areas.

Refreshments will be available in the foyer throughout the day. f. If any class has fewer than 4 entries, at least 83 marks must be

obtained to qualify for the first prize. g. Time limits must be adhered to. Any performance over time will be

penalised as follows:- Up to 15 secs. over—1 mark deducted 16—30 secs. over—2 marks deducted 31—45 secs. over—3 marks deducted h. Parents and teachers are asked to take responsibility for their

children. For further details of our commitment to ensuring a safe environment for children and other vulnerable adults, please see our Safeguarding Policy on page

i. The decision of the committee on all matters is final. Any representations by performers must be made to the Festival Office. Direct communication with the adjudicators is forbidden.

3 AFTER YOUR PERFORMANCE a. Trophies, medals and money prizes are awarded at the time of

adjudication. Adjudication reports and certificates are available from the Festival Office. Original copies of music which you have provided should also be collected from the office. Please do not delay the progress of the festival by trying to collect these as you leave the class.

b. Winners of trophies will be required to provide their personal details and an undertaking to return the trophy to the Trophy Secretary at least one month prior to next year’s festival. The names of winners may be entered on the plinth at their expense. Damage to the trophy while it is in their care must be paid for by the winner. OUR ADJUDICATORS

P aul Bench studied at London and Birmingham Universities,

specialising in literary theory, then the Guildhall School in

acting and public speaking. He was Director of Studies and head

of several large departments of performing arts as well as Director

of The Telford Drama Centre. An examiner with LAMDA for many

years, he travelled to Africa, Australia, China, Japan, America,

Singapore, India and Sri Lanka. Paul is an international back

remedy and Reiki therapist and psychotherapist, specialising in

performance psychology, having contributed to several master

degree courses. As well as being an adjudicator for The British and

International Federation of Festivals, he is also currently Reviews

Editor for the STSD journal and tutor for The Voicecare Network

B ryan Husband studied singing and piano accompaniment at

the Royal College of Music, London, and the Welsh College of

Music and Drama in Cardiff. Having performed for some years in

continental and UK opera houses, concert halls, and music theatre,

he now divides his time between homes in London and Worcester.

Having spent some years as Head of Singing at Guildford School of

Acting, he now teaches at Trinity Laban, London, runs a private teaching practice, gives workshops and masterclasses ('belting' to

audition techniques), performs, adjudicates, examines for a music

board, and also works as a ski instructor! Performances include tv

and radio broadcasts, opera, oratorio and recital.

In 2005, Bryan was selected as a BIFF (British and International

Federation of Festivals) Adjudicator. Adjudication has taken him all over the world, including Hong Kong three times, Gibraltar, and

Trinidad and Tobago, and all around the UK and Ireland, most

recently to Oswestry. In 2012, Bryan was invited to become a

music examiner: his most recent examining work was in Hong

Kong and Thailand, and around the UK. His hobbies include all

theatre, gardening, skiing and walking. Bryan is delighted to be at the Burnley Festival for the first time.

g. MUSIC: The official accompanists must play for all solo vocal classes. Choirs and groups must provide their own accompanist or backing track.

For all set pieces, where the key is not stipulated in the syllabus, performers may use any published key. The key must be stated on the entry form. Copies of set pieces are not required by the adjudicator or accompanist.

For own choice pieces please state the title, composer and key on the entry form. Singers must send a copy of their own choice pieces for the accompanist with their entry form. It may be a photocopy but the original must be provided for the performance on the day of the festival. The music must be complete, totally legible, fastened together and marked with your name and class number.

h. SPEECH: For own choice pieces please state the title and author of the piece on the entry form and enclose a copy.

i. A programme will be sent to each performer at the end of February. Choirs will be sent two programmes.

Following two sold-out previous events, we are very pleased to

announce the third

North West Regional Championship 2019

Every two years, all 19 festivals in the NW region are invited to select

outstanding performers to go forward to the regional Championship.

One performance, either solo, duo or group up to six people, from

each of four disciplines – speech and drama, vocal, instrumental and

dance – will be chosen, and then perform before a panel of Federation

Adjudicators, competing for the overall prize of £100 in their

category.

Burnley Festival is delighted to be part of this prestigious event, and

selected performers will be contacted shortly after the Festival.

Friends, family and members of the public are encouraged to support

this most enjoyable day, which will be held on

Sunday September 8th 2019 in the magnificent

Croston Theatre, Westholme School, Blackburn
