Bunk Bed Build

Material List:


Build the Bottom Bunk

Join the bottom bunk frame together using wood glue and your choice of joinery.

Attach the two ledges with wood glue and screws. Make these top to the top edge then flip the unit over so that these are on the bottom.


Attach the Drawer Stop and the Slats

Cut and attach the drawer stop under the frame.

Place the slats. These can be left unattached or attached with a screw in each end.


Make the Sides

Make two sides that mirror each other. Use wood glue and screws to make all the attachments.

Use a 2x scrap to create the offset for the top rail and the bottom pink blocks


Place the bottom bunk on the hot pink blocks then secure it using screws on all four legs. Use three screws per leg.

Finish making up the top bunk by attaching the two long boards to the header and footer. Use wood glue and two pocket holes per side here.

Space the top bunk slats across the frame

Attach the Bunks


Finish the Front Legs

Attach the second part of the two front L shape legs. Don’t use glue here. Clamp the board in place and attach it using 2 1/2” screws.


Attach the bottom blue 2x4s to create an L shape footprint for the back two legs. Use glue and 2 1/2” screws here to connect them to the inside of the legs. Next use screws to secure the bunk’s frame to this block as well.

Now attach the orange blocks in the same way. First using glue and screws to attach it to the inside of the leg then using only screws to attach it to the top bunks frame

Finish the Back Legs


Build the LadderRound over the top edge of all ladder rung pieces. Drill two pocket holes into each rung then use wood glue and 3” screws to attach it to the front leg.


Build the Railing

Use screws to attach the upper bed railing on the two sides of the bed, then slide the mattresses into place.


Build the BackNow attach the front railing with screws


First find the studs in the wall and attach the three backer boards with 2 1/2” screws. Do this to the top and the bottom.

Build the Shelving Units


Build the Shelving UnitsAfter cutting all the boards to make up the actual shelving units, drill in pocket holes along the bottom of the long green shelf, as well as the bottom of the two orange shelves.

Attach all the components together then move the shelving unit in and attach it to the backboards on the wall, using the pocket holes.


Build the BookshelfCut and attach the stand off pieces to the front of the bed. Note: you can easily do the same on the right side if you would like more storage. Attach these pieces with wood glue then set them in clamps to dry.

Now attach the two front railing boards with wood glue and a brad nailer.


Cut and attach the slats to make up the rock wall. Use 2 1/2” screws to secure each board to all three horizontal boards of the bedframe. The spacing here can vary if you would like more or less visibility to the bottom bunk. I spaced these a part 1 1/2”.

Attach the rock wall hand holds of your choice.

Build the Rock Wall


After cutting all the parts for the drawers, use wood glue and a brad nailer to assemble them. You can either cut in a hand hold on the drawer fronts or buy a handle to attach to the front.

If you want to put casters on the drawers, you will need to shorten the height to compensate for them to be added to the bottom.
