A Note from the Pastor Learning Together

    Dear Aldersgate Friends,

Today our series on Jesus continues with a focus on Jesus as teacher. I suspect that many of us first encounter Jesus in this role through the influence of our parents, a teacher at church, or another trusted adult. We may have been given a childrens Bible or a book with stories introducing us to Jesus as a teacher. Others may have come to experience Jesus as teacher as an adult, an increasingly common experience. Todays scripture in Luke 5:1-11 shows Jesus teaching to a wide range of people from the crowds who are pressing in to hear him to those who will become his closest disciples. We believe that Jesus continues to meet and teach us right where we are, as well explore today.

Im grateful that we are a community of ongoing learners as we continually make ourselves available to God each day. This past Sunday 33 of our leaders and members gathered for a three-hour session led by Rev. Paul Nickerson, a consultant used by the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church to help congregations learn more about making disciples. On Thursday a new class of four Stephen Ministers met to begin their 50 hours of training as lay caregivers. The list goes on and on and will hopefully grow as we make ourselves available to Jesus as Teacher.

Grace and peace, Scott Rev. Scott Davis, Lead Pastor

and bring about spiritual growth? We will be doing the Lenten Study by

Kenneth Carter "Near The Cross" starting the week of February 8th. We

would like to make this a church wide study engaging as many people as

    possible.

group please contact Mike Thornton at [email protected].

    New Sunday School Study

The Seekers Class will begin a study of the Gospel of Matthew on

January 17 in the Fellowship Hall downstairs. We will dig deep into the

scripture with an emphasis on discussion of Jesus' own teachings on

how to live as his disciples. Although his gospel was addressed to the

Hebrews of his day, these teachings also instruct us on how we should

live in accordance with his guidance in today's world. Please join us and

see if this topic is of interest to you. Feel free to drop in.
