This Week at the CC

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus tells a story of the rich man and his relationship to the poor man, Lazarus. An interesting question arises: why does Jesus name the poor man, but not the rich man? In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus offers many parables and stories… and in most, the characters are unnamed. Jesus’ choice to name Lazarus seems almost ironic. The rich man’s eventual fate of torment is not because he was wealthy or lived luxuriously, but rather because he always chose to ignore Lazarus. He consistently turned away from Lazarus’s need, even though the rich man clearly had more than enough food and wealth to spare. By telling the story in this way, Jesus reveals a powerful truth about God. After his death, the rich man suffers a terrible fate. Not only his torment, but also that the man would live on in infamy without ever being named. His fate is to be known, yet unknown. On the other hand, Lazarus, who had nothing in life, receives the one thing forever denied to the rich man: to be named and known by God. Our Catholic tradition upholds something called the “preferential option for the poor.” What this means is that, in order to truly be disciples of Christ, we are called to promote social justice and care for the poor and marginalized; to know and call each other by name, to look one another in the eye and treat each other with dignity and compassion.
