Background

The Department of Physics, BUET is a well recognized

department in Bangladesh for postgraduate studies. The MSc

programme in Physics of this department will provide

students with enough skills, knowledge and research ability

for establishing a bright career. The students can apply their

gained expertise, knowledge and hands-on experiences from

experimental techniques, theoretical analysis, simulation and

modeling to various sectors in this country. To satisfy

national and international needs, the programme is designed

to produce well-qualified postgraduates who will be able to

respond to the challenges needed for further developments in

these fields. The participation of this department in various

international collaborations will create exceptional

opportunities for the students to work as a part of an

international team.

Target

Students will learn theoretical courses of Physics with

upgraded syllabus and acquire advanced knowledge that will

help them select innovative new topics. They will plan for

novel research projects, contemplating the problems of

current issues in Physics. The students will design the

project consulting with their supervisors and generate new

ideas to resolve the unsolved problems of the issues. They

will develop insights into the techniques used in their

projects, and gain in-depth experiences of a specialized

research area. The programme will provide them useful

professional excellences, which can be applied for their

challenging academic career.

Achievement

As MSc students, they will reside under the umbrella of a

scientific community in the department, which is well

decorated with highly qualified and experienced teachers.

The students will earn knowledge from contemporary

teaching and research, which are aimed at finding solutions

for the problems of Physics facing the world today and

tomorrow. The department is offering students better

opportunities to study in a congenial and challenging

environment, where sophisticated research facilities exist

and excellent education is provided. In addition to building

a comprehensive theoretical base in their chosen subjects,

they will gain expertise on elective subjects and a specific

research area. Moreover, the cutting-edge education and

research work in this MSc programme will help them

contribute to the scientific development of the country and

the globe.

Curriculum

The MSc in Physics is a one and a half academic years (3

semesters) programme and comprises 36-credit hours. Each

academic year consists of two semesters: April Semester

and October Semester. The programme consists of both

core and specialized subjects and offers possibilities to

tailor it to their own interests.

In addition, the students will work on a project in a research

group of their choice in order to develop their expertise.

Their research projects are structured by national and

international collaborations. Upon completion of their

projects, they will present their work before an examination

committee to achieve the degree.

Research Area

The research area includes three different branches: i) Solid

State Physics, ii) Medical Physics, and iii) Atmospheric

Physics. The laboratories of these three branches are well

equipped with modern facilities. The national and

international collaborations of this department provide

opportunities to work in the laboratories of the

collaborative institutes. The students also have chances to

interact with renowned foreign researchers through the

participation of national and international conference,

seminar, symposium, etc.
