INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE’S MESSAGEThis is Cecelia’s last message as your international Trustee

Greetings, Ohio Key Clubbers!

Throughout my time in Key Club I have come to realize the importance and power of District Convention- being around hundreds and thousands of fellow servant leaders. There is a reason that you will leave your convention excited about service. There is a reason that you will return back to your home club and want to jump right into service. There is a reason that the best members in our entire organization attend their district conventions and participate fully. And the reason is that at a district convention you get that chance to see the amazing service that the people around you are doing, the immense impact that this very service has on your community as well as the world, and the amazing room for creativity that there is when it comes to serving one’s community. You learn, you laugh, you dance, and you see the power that each and every one of you has – all at your district convention. So get excited and get ready to meet amazing people from across the district. Listen to their unique and interesting ideas for serving their own communities, learn as much as you can from the speakers and workshops that have been so carefully put together, and get ready to become

the best servant leader that you can. District Convention can change your leaderships style, your projects, your club, and your life, but only if you let it.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your International Trustee this year and I cannot believe that the time has come to bring another year of service and leadership to an end. It has been an honor to and represents all of you. You have truly made this year an unforgettable and remarkable milestone in my life and for that I would like to humbly express my gratitude. I hope to see you April 12-14th in Columbus, Ohio, for District Convention, a special time to celebrate our oneness in service as Key Clubbers.

Thank you all so much for your service and commitment to this organization- you all have made this year a success! You are truly amazing. Now go make the most of your Key Club adventure! Best wishes to all of you in your future endeavors.

A friend in service,Cecelia FergusonInternational Trustee

SAY HI!Make sure to see Moriah at DCON and say hello! Maybe even share your favorite key club memory with her.

GOVERNOR'S MESSAGEThe final message from your 2012-2013 District Governor Moriah Saer

This is my final article as Governor. It has been an honor being your governor for the past year. I would like to wish you all the best with the remainder of your Key Club year and high school year! Always remember to make service a priority in your life no matter what you decide to do!

Now what is your next step? For Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors, you can run for a club or District appointed position (application online). For my fellow seniors, whether you are going to college or not, there are things you can do to still be involved with in your community through the Kiwanis-Family. If you plan on attending college, think about joining a Circle K club. Circle K International is the college equivalent of Key Club. If either your college doesn't have a Circle K or if you won't be attending college this Fall, you can join Kiwanis and continue serving. All of these choices are fantastic options, so take advantage of your opportunities.

I hope you all plan on coming to the Ohio District Convention April 12-14! Please join us for this weekend of

fellowship and service. Visit ohiokeyclub.org for more information. This is a fabulous opportunity for you to see how other clubs run and interact and to see how we can all come together as a District. I remember at the first District Convention that I attended, I was really nervous but once I got there, I never wanted to leave. It is the coolest experience to be surrounded by 400 other Key Club members who share the same passion of you, service. This years theme could not be more perfect, it is Make Service the Star of the Show. So be sure to bring your Hollywood costume and energetic presence. This is sure to be a fantastic District Convention. I look forward to seeing you there!

Yours in service and friendship,Moriah Saer

Key Clubbers! We are all aware that DCON is just around

the corner and I that hope we are all excited as well! A big part of the District Convention experience is dressing up and enjoying yourself. It is important that everyone follow dress code so that all members can maximize their fun. For the 2013 DCON the dress code is as follows:

Friday: Host Club Meeting (Casual Attire) Kick-Off Session (Casual Attire) – (Wear Convention T-shirts to Spirit Rally) Meet the Candidates Caucuses (Casual Attire) Dance (Casual Attire)

Saturday: Breakfast (Business Attire) Kiwanis Family Session (Business Attire) Caucuses (Business Attire) Sergeant-at-Arms (Business Attire) Forums (Business Attire) House of Delegates (Business Attire) District Board Banquet (Semi-Formal/Formal) Governor’s Ball (Semi-Formal/Formal)

Sunday: Church Service (Business Casual Attire) Breakfast (Business Casual Attire) District Board and Club Awards Session (Business Casual Attire)

For those of you who may not be aware what these terms: Casual, Business Casual, Business, and Formal mean, look no farther.

For the males in attendance: Casual attire simply means khakis, dress shorts, jeans, collared shirts and sweaters. T-shirts should not be worn except during the Spirit Rally. Business casual requires slacks, khakis, and collared shirts while business requires dress slacks, sports coat, shirt and tie, suit and tie or sweater and tie. Business attire carries over to formal attire as well.

For the ladies in attendance: Casual attire includes khakis, jeans, dress shorts, collared shirts, sweaters, and blouses. Business casual requires dresses, skirts, khakis, blouses, sweaters and colored shirts with business including dresses, skirt outfits, and pant suits. Formal occasions call for tea-length formal gowns, long formal ball gowns, nice dresses, or nice pant suits.

The dance on Friday night also calls for a special dress code…celebrity style! Feel free to dress upas one of your favorite Hollywood characters (keep it appropriate) and dance the night away. We will be having a photo booth so don’t hold back.

By Julianne GuzikOhio District Key Clubbers, or should I say

stars of service; as chair of the 2013 Ohio District Key Club Convention I am thrilled that in less than three weeks we will all be celebrating a wonderful year of service together. As our convention is fast approaching I’d like to give you the inside scoop on what to expect at convention, make service the star of the show. On Friday, April 12th of convention come early to get your shirts, pins, drop off contest entries and of course check in! Starting Friday you can support the Eliminate Project by purchasing raffle tickets for your chance to win one of about thirty raffle baskets; you can also support Yuda Bands by buying one of their bracelets. Yuda Bands donates their profits to educate children in third world countries, so bring some spending money to donate to these two awesome causes. Bring your Key Club spirit for our opening session filled with our annual banner parade, spirit rally and our Key Note Speaker, Patrick Maurer, past Key Club Governor of Cali – Nev- Ha District. After opening session, put on your

best celebrity impersonation costume and dance the night away at our celebrity dance. After our Saturday morning session make your way to caucuses to hear from candidates and be their paparazzi as you question them! This year we are proudly offering FOURTEEN different forums! If you aren’t a delegate you will have the chance to attend four of these forums and if you are a delegate you will attend three. Some of these forums include; Eliminate, Ice Breakers, Hands on Service Project, The First Lady’s Project, Zumba, fundraising, Key Club 101 Game Show and MORE!!! Enjoy a night of talent performances and awards during out Saturday night session and then dress your best for the Governor’s ball. KICK START YOUR SPRING SERVICE WITH THESE PROJECT IDEAS!

Seeds of service A great Kiwanis family inter-club opportunity

Want to liven up the look of your home, school and community? Take a few minutes this spring to plant flowers at your campus, park or around town. Doing so will beautify your area, and may even plant the seeds of service in all those who enjoy the plants, urging them to pick up where you left off.

Thank a teacher As students, nothing we do would be possible without the help of our schools’ faculty and staff. Consider showing your thanks to these important figures by designating one or more meetings per year to card creating. Let each faculty member in your school know how much they’re appreciated by writing inspirational messages of thanks inside personalized cards. Personally delivering them can also add a special touch.

First aid class Offer a free first aid class for kids and community members in your area. Find a professional willing to donate his time or do your own research to teach basic first aid facts and action plans for situations likely to happen around the house, school and outside. Making the class fun

and informative for kids can ensure children’s safety whether adults are around or not.

Kids’ safety mapsWant to keep kids in your neighborhood safe? Map out the best routes

from your neighborhood to the local elementary and middle schools and distribute the maps to area youth. Using them will keep

kids safely away from danger while encouraging social science skills.Lights, camera, goodbyeGive each senior in your school’s graduating class 45

seconds in front of a video camera to say farewell to the school. The tape can also include shots from prom, graduation

and other big events throughout the year. You can sell copies as a fundraiser for your favorite charity, or give the work away to any

student who supplies a blank tape.Art show

Hold an art fair for the local kids. Have them submit art in different formats and age groups, then display them and allow the public to vote on the winners. Instill a love of art in the new generation and raise the spirits of local children through this awesome project.

IT’S WARMINGYeah I know, spring in ohio is long in coming (my spring break included a snow storm), but sure enough it will be here soon enough. End your school year with some of these great warm weather projects, and don’t forget to keep summer full of service!!

Get out there and end your year with

As the end of the school year is approaching, and activities are dwindling. Many seniors are wondering, what's next? For most the choice is obvious: college. But if there was more to it? A way to serve in the same Key-Club spirited way while sleeping in dorms and learning about majors you can't even pronounce? Well you can! The next step in the K-Family is Circle K. Translation: Key Cub- The college years. We as seniors in Ohio are given this amazing opportunity to continue serving, long after the Key Club

bell has been rung for the last time. Circle K is not only a great way to make friends in a new college, but a way to serve your community!

Dance-a-thons, blood drives, and marathons are just a couple things that separate Circle K from the normal college life. You are fighting for the same causes that you were in high school like Hope in the Hospital, eliMiNaTe, UNICEF, but combined with all the fun of college. Take the chance and join Circle K. It will be a wild ride

1. Find out as much as you can about the position you want to run for. Ask the person currently holding the position.

2. Know a lot about Key Club. No matter your position, you need to either know the answers to questions or know where to find them. Read up on Key Club on the web such as KeyClub.org and capitalkeyclub.org, District and International Bylaws, and through your current Lieutenant Governor newsletters.

3. Get some experience. Whether serving as Club President or Freshman Representative, a little bit of club experience will not only give you something to pad your resume, but it will more importantly allow you the chance to see what makes a servant leader.

4. Attend Key Club functions. Go to as many events outside of your home club as possible! These could include Divisional Meetings, interclubs with neighboring Key Clubs, Key Leader in the spring and fall, District Convention (DCON) in the spring, and International Convention (ICON) in the summer.

5. Make sure you have support. It really helps if your parents and home club are on your side. Let them know why this position is important to you.

6. Practice your public speaking. Talking in front of people becomes

easier if you practice...and I don’t just mean your election speeches. Speak every chance you get and you should become more comfortable with it.

7. Be confident! You are so brave for even wanting to run...don’t forget that! Always remember be yourself! Most importantly show your Key Club passion, enthusiasm, and dedication; with these you have the key tools to be successful. The business aspects of the position can be learned, but you cannot teach Key Club passion.

8. Ask questions. There are no stupid questions. If you have one, do not be afraid to ask. I would be more than happy to help you.

9. Be in it for the right reasons. Make sure you really understand the office and be passionate, about the position, before you take on that responsibility. While it’s a lot of fun, your position will come with even more work. Be prepared for this.

10. Have FUN! Running for office is an experience you will never forget, so make the most of it! I wish you all the best of luck.

BUT WHY?-A note from your editor

I have been a key clubber since my freshman year, and your (very proud) bullein editor for two. All I can tell you about Higher office is.. DO IT! There is so much to learn about yourslef and others from a leadership experience. There is a place for you here. Your skills (even the ones you don’t know about yet) will be tested, used and blossom. The first step is just trying, putting your foot in the door, making it work. You can do it, it is a worthwhile risk.

LaSalleThis past year, Cincinnati

LaSalle High School has participated in numerous service projects and fundraisers in our community.  Our international motto of “Caring – A Way of Life” is directly aligned with LaSalle’s mission of “We are…Called to Serve.”

It has been a record setting year as we have had 166 members, in a school of 689 students, and performed over 2,600 service hours in 14 various service opportunities. Our club has continually expanded throughout the years, as this year we have increased our membership by 66% and have

served 1000 more hours than the previous year. We have dedicated support from Cheviot Westwood Kiwanis and share a common passion to serve.

Whether it is serving at a nursing home, volunteering in athletics with special needs youth, assisting at a local farm, helping children of Spanish speaking parents while they are studying English, or serving at school functions, our members are true servant leaders in our community.  In particular, during the winter, we have raised and collected over $8,100 dollars in clothing donations for Jordanian Christians and a local charity in downtown Cincinnati. We have had a wonderful opportunity to work with people with diverse backgrounds, and help make a difference in our home, school, and community one hour at a time.

Port Clinton Over the past couple of

months the Port Clinton High School Key Club has put

together and participated in many heartwarming service projects. In December the PCHS Key

Club rang the bell for the Salvation Army. Members

volunteered at the Salvation Army’s Toy Distribution, for Ottawa County, helping parents pick out and carry presents for their children. One of their biggest projects was Kids games at the Port Clinton New Year’s Eve Walleye Drop. Students set up games, ran them, and gave out prizes to the children.

These projects have helped out the Port Clinton community greatly, but the project that has meant the most to their school and community is the joint project, Pancakes for Devin, they helped with for Port Clinton Kiwanis, along with the Builders Club. Devin Kohlman is a local boy that attends Port Clinton Middle School. Devin was diagnosed with Brain Cancer a year ago. Devin has been close to their hearts and the generosity of the Port Clinton community helped them raise $2,300 to help Devin and his family. Port Clinton High School Key Club has spent a great deal of time helping children and families in their community and is a wonderful asset to Port Clinton.

Tiffin Columbian Tiffin Columbian Key Club has done many different activities this year. The key club has

participated in making pillows for the hospital, helping with homecoming and helping out with different activities for the School of Opportunity Center. The club has helped the School of Opportunity Center with baseball games, art day in the park, and Palm Sunday Dinner. The Key Club has also done a car wash to help students go on school trips. The Tiffin Columbian Key Club has helped welcome in a new key club in the Kiwanis family. We are very excited to have Calvert as a new member of our family!

Tiffin Columbian Key Clubs up and coming events are the Highway clean- up and a chili cook- off. On both of these events we will be partnering with Tiffin Kiwanis Club and Tiffin

Calvert Key Club. The chili cook- off proceeds

will go to the Key Club’s Feed the Family Project.

Your Voice!Has your Key club done

something pretty awesome?? If so make sure to let the test of the state know about it. Your submissions as always are very valued and appreciated. Be sure to see your school up here for the Fall Bulletin !! Send submissions (pictures are appreciated also) to [email protected]

May 6, 2013 to May 10, 2013Tasked with the purpose of spreading

awareness of Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus to the general public, some members of the Key Club International Board and representatives from The Eliminate Project subcommittee have come together to plan the inaugural The Eliminate Project Week. Through this event we hope to not only make The Eliminate Project more visible, but also give individuals a clear method to raise additional funds for the project.

The Eliminate Project week is set to be held the first full week of March (March 4-8). It will take every Key Clubber and their combined efforts to make this event successful. Listed below you will find the daily events/ themes that the committee created to unify our work and focus our purpose. Monday, May 6

Spread the Word, Save a Life- This event aims to establish The Eliminate Project as a household name on a national level and has two unique aspects.

The first aspect is to utilize local news media as a resource to spread awareness. We recommend that you contact your local new stations and newspapers in an effort to have them feature a story on The Eliminate Project. By targeting media outlets, we can spread the message of The Eliminate Project on an individual community basis. Make sure to give the media source ample time to develop its story; reporters cannot write a story overnight!

The second aspect of Media Day is to use all forms of social media to spread the word. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. Tumblr. Flickr. YouTube. All of it! On this day, post about The Eliminate Project once every hour. Try to share every post, picture, or video that you see. Our hope is that by frequently sharing and posting new information about

The Eliminate Project on these social media sites, we will be able to inform others what Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus is and how they can make a difference. Suggestions of what can be posted are listed below:

-Describe what The Eliminate Project is-Describe your favorite project that

raised funds for The Eliminate Project-Describe your goal for The Eliminate

Project this year-Describe how The Eliminate Project

has made an impact on the world-Describe why The Eliminate Project is

important to you-Describe what inspires you to

participate in The Eliminate Project-Post a picture of yourself with your The

Eliminate Project merchandise-Share your favorite video for The

Eliminate ProjectShare a link to donate for The Eliminate

Project-Use The Eliminate Project banners

created for Facebook by the Key Club International Board. (can be found at www.lolololol.com)

Tuesday, May 7Around the World in 540 Minutes-

Kiwanis International has raised the bar for all of its Service Leadership Programs. Our new goal is to raise $5.40 per member for The Eliminate Project. For this event we want every member to raise $5.40 in under 9 hours. Not only will we reach our SLP goal of $1.5 million by doing this; we will also save 834,000 mothers and their babies. For this project to be successful we need full participation from all of our Key Clubbers. Clubs can make this day exciting by holding the event as a competition between its members and rewarding the member who raises the most.

The Eliminate Project week

Page 13: Buckeye Key Spring 2013

[13]

Malesuada eleifend, tortor molesWednesday, May 8Advocate to Vaccinate- The goal of

this event is to target your student body, faculty, and staff. Talk to your administration and encourage them to hold an informative assembly that will teach your school about The Eliminate Project and the global campaign to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. This event can be especially successful if you involve your teachers. One example is getting your history teacher to instruct your class about the geographic areas in which Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus still kills millions. Not only will the teacher be instructing their class, but students will also be learning about the devastating effects of MNT.

The second part of this event is to advertise The Eliminate Project in your neighborhood. The main objective is to go around your neighborhood and to introduce The Eliminate Project to each of your neighbors. You can inform them about the success that Kiwanis International and UNICEF are having in the fight against Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Make sure to handout flyers, hang posters, and explain how one can donate money to The Eliminate Project. One way you can do this in your neighborhood is to purchase blue plastic cups and insert them into a fence to form a word that describes The Eliminate Project.

Thursday, May 9Give-it-up Day- This event is meant to

make a difference by giving up something for just one day. We are asking that you save the money you would normally spend on a pack of gum, a cup of coffee, or on that new pair of shoes, and donate it instead. This can be hard to do, but the difference you will be making will be noticed. Emphasize to your family, friends, and Key Clubbers that this money will be used to save mothers and their babies.

Friday, May 10Eliminate YOUR Way- On the last day

of this campaign we want you to make one last push to raise funds and awareness. We want you to create your own idea and your own day for this campaign. Start a project, raise funds, and then send us your success story. Today is your day to make a difference!

#Elimin8 This is the official hashtag created by The Eliminate Project. By using this hashtag you will remind everyone of our commitment to end Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus by 2015 once and for all.

Giving Form The giving form can be found on TheEliminateProject.com by

clicking on resources and then to new resources. The Kiwanis Family giving form will help us track the amount of money raised throughout this week.

Do not forget to write “Key Club The Eliminate Project Week” under the recipient name line on the form. This will allow us to properly recognize clubs and individuals for their efforts throughout the week.

We hope that these ideas will help your club and yourself as you strive to make The Eliminate Project Week 2013 a success for everyone. We hope to hear your success stories!

It has been a wonderful journey for me in Key Club, and I’m sad to say that this will be my final bulletin (you get to elect my replacement at DCON):). You all have been wonderful and I hope my bulletins have been useful and fun for you all. I will be off to OSU next year.

My favorite memories Key club has been an important facet of my

High school experience. I have friends, experiences and great memories that I would never have without it. I will never forget the trips I took with my key club friends. ICON in Phoenix, watching swimsuits dry in under 10 minutes, a crazy 115 degree walk, silly dancing at the hoedown and all the people I met. In Orlando exploring disney. I cherish all of the district board meetings and my club meetings (maybe with food at them :).

I have won and lost elections, wrote speeches in elevators, fell off heels, ate copious amounts of pizza and made some of my best friends.

We have done so many service projects, my favorite bing our school’s special needs prom. I ran it for two years and it was one of those events that you can pour your heart and soul into , question if it was really worth it, then look in the eyes of the attendees and their parents and know, yes, it was worth it , a thousand times over. These memories are the essence of key club. The work we do will always, and forevermore be worthwhile.

What i have learnedIt sounds cheezy, but it really

is hard to sum all of what Key CLub has taught me into words. Key Club has been one of the best things that have ever happened to me though.

Put yourself out there! You will gain nothing, in key

club or life if you don’t. Go to meetings, but more than that, attend all the service you can, meet everyone don’t just stick with your friends. go past your comfort zone.

Never stopYou win some you loose some. I have done

my share of both, but that doesn’t mean you should give up if you loose or do poorly at something. In Key Club there will always be someone there to lift you up and help you learn from the experience. You will grow, the more you try, the more you grow.

Say thanksYou will meet so many wonderful important

people in your Key Club journey, don’t forget to let them know how important they are to you.

LeadershipBeing a leader is so much more than just

being the one who runs a project. Leaders must inspire, provide a positive example, be patient and flexible. Most of all , as a leader it is your

personal mission to find everyone’s strengths and help them contribute as much

as they can to the group effort. Lift others up, you will find everything improves.

My thank-yousThere are far too many people that I should

be listing, but I will just go with a few, but know I love you all :)

Mom and Dad- Thank you so much for driving me around even when you probably wanted to stay at home and rest. Thanks for supporting me, good and bad .

Don and Carol Parker- Thank you for being my surrogate grandparents, always there with love and good advice. You have meant the world to me, and brightened many of my days.

Donna Moss- For as much as you shy away from getting credit, you deserve it. You have always pushed me to be my best and try new things (even when I was too scared) thank you for this, and much much more.

A GOODBYEThis is my last bulletin as your editor, thank you all for allowing me this experience.

AS ALWAYSHave a club spotlight, article suggestion or anything else you would like to tell me? Feel free to email [email protected] and I will respond back. When the new bulletin editor is elected they will take over this email so just keep using it !
