“Speed Kills”

Page 2: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

The Basics: “Defence”

• The aim of the defence is to stop the opponents offence gaining ground and scoring.

• The Defence are made up of three main positions:• Defensive Line; the font line in the trench warfare, these

are the aggressive monsters of the D.• Line Backers; the ultimate warriors, arrogantly

dominating the field, hard hitting and smart.• Defensive backs; the speed demons, agile but always

sure tacklers

Page 3: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

The Basics: “Defensive Schemes”

• The schemes are described in terms of the number of defensive linemen and the number of linebackers;

• e.g. 3 – 5 cover 3 means…• There are 3 defensive linemen and 5 linebackers.• The rest of the scheme is for the defensive backs and

linebackers to know who to cover if the offence are passing. Cover 3 means a three deep zone, which will be explained more later.

• Other schemes are 4-4, 3-4, 4-3 etc etc.• Other coverage's are cover 1 (man to man) and cover 2,

a two deep zone.

Page 4: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

The Basics: Labelling the “holes”

A A BB CC DD

• The gaps between the offensive line are labelled from the centre outwards on both sides from A to D

• The offence label thw holes by numbers; even to their right, odd to their left.

The Basics: Strong vs Weak

• The strong side of the offence is determined by the side which has more men on the line.

Page 6: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

The Basics: Inside vs Outside

• Each offensive player has an inside and an outside shoulder, this terminology is used frequently to describe where the centre of the field or the ball is in relation to the player

Speed Kills: Philosophy

• “Speed Kills” (so be first)• Get to the tackle before being blocked• Get to the ball before your opponent• Get to the hole first• Make the first hit• Recover the fumble• Catch the interception• Be first to the win, first all the time!• Be organised so no time is wasted

Page 11: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

Speed Kills: Practice

• Be first to arrive! Learn quickly• Get kit on quickly• Time is important so move between drills quickly• Complete drills at speed• Focus, get the job done then move on to the

next victim• Beat your PB 40 yard etc

Page 12: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

Speed Kills: Science

• Speed = Distance / Time• Power = Strength x Speed• Therefore Power = Strength x Distance / Time• Athlete #1 300lb x 2ft / 2s = 600/2 = 300ft/lb/s• Athlete #2 400lb x 2ft / 4s = 800/4 = 200ft/lb/s• Therefore the athlete who can lift the weight quickest has

the most Power

• Explosive Power is proven to be the key deciding factor in making the block, tackle or hit.

• More Speed = More Explosive Power = Making the play

Page 13: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

Speed Kills: Be Physical

• Be an athlete

• Train hard, 3 to 5 days a week

• Run fast, hard & long

• Lift weights quickly up, (slowly down)

• Save time – run to the gym!

• Get rest to give you power

Page 14: Buccaneers Defence 10/11

Speed Kills: Be Healthy

• Eat regularly, at least 5 times a day!!!

• Have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack.

• Eat right;• wholemeal = make you faster• veg & fruit = make you fitter• Fish, lean meat, chicken = make you stronger

• Eat fast absorbing protein “whey protein”
