    Safety fears answeredBy Yasemin Talat

More lanes and new safety barriers will be added to EJ Whitten Bridge as part of the next stage of the M80 Ring Road upgrade.

State Roads and Safety Minister Luke Donnellan joined Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman at EJ Whitten Bridge last Tuesday to announce the Ring Road extension from Sunshine Avenue to the east of the bridge.

e upgrade will include works to strengthen and widen the bridge, creating more trac lanes. It will also include new public safety

barriers something the community has long campaigned for with temporary barriers going in during construction.

More than 330 people were hurt and four people died driving on the M80 Ring Road in a ve-year period, Ms Hutchins said.

ats not good enough. Were making this upgrade to make this

road safer.Mr Donnellan said the next stage of the

M80 upgrade would create almost 1000 direct and indirect jobs, and be a boost for the state economy.

He said the state government was getting on

with projects that mean people will spend less time stuck in trac.

e upgrade will ease congestion, cut travel times and make the commute safer and more reliable for the 160,000 drivers using the freeway every day, Mr Donnellan said.

Ms Hutchins said the new bridge barriers were especially important in addressing the communitys safety concerns.

e community has campaigned for the safety barriers on EJ Whitten Bridge, Ms Hutchins said. Weve listened and were building them.

e Sunshine Avenue interchange will also

be upgraded and widened to allow more trac to enter and exit the freeway, and will include new signals on the Greensborough-bound entry ramp to allow trac to merge safely.

e works will also remove the bottleneck at Sunshine Avenue where the lanes now merge from four lanes into two.

Expressions of interest will be sought in August, with the contract for the works expected to be awarded in early 2016.

Works are planned to start in mid-2016.e full M80 Ring Road upgrade is a

$2.25 billion project funded by the federal and state governments.

Churro-eating just got sweeter.Chocolateria San Churro Watergardens

home of the Spanish donut known as churro has teamed up with beyondblue, encouraging the community to share a churro with a friend to help the organisation that supports people with depression and anxiety.

The cafe will launch its Share a Churros Week campaign on June 15, and donate $1 to the non-prot organisation from every churro dish bought during the week.

All funds raised will go to beyondblues support services, centred on telephone and web-based lines to trained mental health counsellors.

In 2013-14, beyondblue staff answered 73,000 phone calls and 7000 emails, and engaged in 23,000 web chats.

The cafe has further pledged to double its donation to beyondblue for every in-store churros photo posted on Instagram using the hashtag #shareachurrros. It will also replace its tip jar with donation boxes.

Store manager Terese Maurici said Share A Churros Week was a great way for people to connect or reconnect over a churro. Its a good excuse to have some chocolate and something sweet and reach out and talk to your friends, she said.

Derrimut 24:7 Gym owner Nikolaos Solomos narrowly escaped a potentially fatal shooting at Burnside on May 21. Armed Crime Squad detectives said the shooting took place when Mr Solomos parked his car on Mockridge Street about 5pm.

And on Sunday, bomb squad police were called to a house in Burnside aer a suspect device was discovered on top of a car belonging to Mr Solomos.

In relation to the shooting incident, police

said a man wearing a balaclava got out of a nearby car and red two shots through the window at Mr Solomos. Both shots missed him, but he received minor injuries from shattered glass.

Mr Solomos drove to Sunshine police station to report the incident.

Police believe the gunman le the scene in the car of an accomplice.

e car is believed to be a dark green Subaru Impreza wagon, possibly a 1994-98 model, with stolen number plates.

    Its extremely concerning given that

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Australia to promote his rapidly growing business two years ago, said the attempt on his life made no sense.

Somethings not right. It just doesnt add up with my lifestyle, Mr Solomos told a media conference on Wednesday.

Ill just put it out there that were not involved in organised crime, were not aliated with anyone. Were a family-owned business.

Police are urging anyone who has information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Commuters who use a Deer Park V/Line train service are worried they wont be able to make it to work on time when timetable changes kick in.

Passengers on the 6.08am Ballarat line departing from Deer Park station were told last week that their service would no longer be available.

Derrimut resident Peter Grech said the cancellation of the 6.08am train would have repercussions for him and his family.

Mr Grech said he drove his wife to Deer Park station each morning so that she could make it to work by 7am.

ey need to look aer people who do an honest days work, Mr Grech said. We are in a suburb where were treated like second-class citizens.

Mr Grech said eliminating the service would leave a gap in the timetable, meaning commuters such as his wife either would be forced to catch a train one hour earlier or one hour later.

A Public Transport Victoria spokesperson said it would take feedback into consideration but that as of June 21 there would be a massive boost to train services from Deer Park station with more travel options and quicker journey times.

With the Regional Rail Link now complete, it was necessary to rewrite the timetable for both the Ballarat and Geelong lines to provide more services for Brimbank residents, the spokesperson said. Given the complex nature of timetabling both Ballarat and Geelong line services, it was necessary to shi some services earlier or later.

Peace and community spirit come to the fore for Muslims across Melbournes west and north as they prepare for the holy month of Ramadan.

Next week, Ramadan starts and for a month Muslims across the world will abstain from food and drink and refrain from gossip and other activities deemed unseemly, from dawn until dusk.

Sunshine mosque president Mustafa Ramadan said the month was signicant for Muslims as an opportunity to purify the soul, refocus attention on God and come together as a community.

e mosque is run by the Cyprus Turkish Islamic Community, and Mr Ramadan said

the coming month gave Muslims the chance to express thanks for their good fortune and be more aware of the hardships of others.

Some people around the world dont have access to eating three meals a day or the luxury to eat whatever they want, he said.

Ramadan is a chance to experience what that might feel like and be thankful that we are fortunate to be here with these opportunities.

He said each night Muslims came together with family and friends for the evening meal, known as iar, to end their daily fast.

We always prepare iar dinners at the mosque and we try and have all the community together, Mr Ramadan said. Bringing people

together and social interaction is part of being a community.

Mr Ramadan said the wider community would also be welcomed to the mosque for a special iar meal in coming weeks.

In the past, the Sunshine mosque has hosted guests from Victoria Police, government ministers and community leaders, both Muslim and non-Muslim, at its iars.

Eid celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan will be held at Sunshine mosque on the rst Sunday of August. We want to live in peace with everybody, Mr Ramadan said.

Laws protecting people and animals from dangerous and restricted breeds of dogs will be reviewed by a Victorian parliamentary inquiry

Parliaments economy and infrastructure committee will consider whether current laws encourage responsible dog ownership and protect the community and environment.

As well as canvassing community concerns, the inquiry will investigate issues around the moratorium on putting down restricted-breed dogs when problems arise.

Committee chairman Joshua Morris said the inquiry would address long-standing community concerns about the adequacy of the states laws in preventing dog attacks.

e issue of dangerous dogs and, in particular, restricted-breed dogs invokes strong views in the community, Mr Morris said.

ere have been well-documented cases of serious, and occasionally fatal, dog attacks, which have led to calls for stronger action from government.

Mr Morris said the inquiry would hear from a wide range of people and make recommendations aimed at strengthening both community safety and fairness to the dogs and dog owners at the centre of the inquiry.

Brimbank council will prepare a submission. e councils city development director, Stuart

Menzies, said it would use feedback from sta and previous hearings, as well as community responses from the councils Facebook page. e council investigated 276 dog attacks between 2011 and 2013, including one fatal

dog attack: the horric case of four-year-old St Albans girl Ayen Chol, who was attacked by a pitbull-cross that had escaped a neighbouring property.

e Ayen Chol case was a tragedy, Mr Menzies said. Council is mindful of the coroners ndings and will make every eort to administer the Domestic Animals Act and promote responsible pet ownership.

Between 2010 to 2013, more than 26,000 domestic animal complaints were lodged with Brimbank council, including complaints about nuisance pets and dogs causing problems for other domestic animals and wildlife.

In 2014, there were more than 6000 complaints and, from January to March this year, the council recorded 1528 complaints.

Mr Menzies said the council investigated all reports about dangerous dogs and restricted breeds.

e councils most recent involvement with a restricted-breed dog case ended last year. It concerned the case of an unregistered Sunshine West dog, Mylo, found wandering in May 2012 and subsequently placed on death row. He was returned to owners last December.

Submissions to the Domestic Animals Act inquiry will be taken until July 10. Details: www.parliament.vic.gov.au/eic

Brooke (pictured) joined more than 300 students from across Australia in becoming principal for the day on June 3.

Organised by the Principals Australia Institute, the event is part of a campaign to encourage leadership in Australian students.

Institute chief executive Jim Davies said the campaign was aimed at unleashing

and inspiring students best qualities. As student principal, Brooke shadowed regular principal Lorraine Bell and undertook tasks that included attending meetings. Her rst item to deal with as principal was a policy for fair use of the down-ball courts.

She saw some children missed out when other groups baggsed the courts, Ms Bell said. Brooke said it would be fairer if they rotated the courts every 15 minutes.

Boral Deer Park Quarry Build something great

Boral recently submitted a planning permit application to Melton City Council for the building of a new quarry processing plant and associated works at the Boral Deer Park Quarry.

The quarry has been providing essential resources to Melbourne for more than 50 years. Materials supplied from the site have been used in the building and construction of private and public projects in the Melbourne CBD and across the greater west.

To continue to provide quality materials, Boral proposes to replace the current quarry processing plant which has been in operation since the quarry opening in the 1960s.

The proposed plant will provide advantages that would be expected of a 50-year advancement in technology, including significant efficiency and environmental gains such as reductions in operational noise and dust generation.

Vocational education teacher Julie Ann Gunn is one of the 717 Australians recognised yesterday in the 2015 Queens Birthday honours list.

Ms Gunn, a VET trainer at Catholic Regional College Sydenham, will receive a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to youth through the Scouting movement.

e OAM is the pre-eminent means of recognising Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement.

Ms Gunn has been a part of Scouts for about 40 years, rst joining as a newly-wed.

My husband was a member of scouting; once we got married I thought it would be something Id enjoy doing with him, Ms Gunn said.

And she hasnt looked back. Ms Gunn has been leading Venturer Scouts,

aged 14 to 18, in dierent roles and districts across the state.

On hearing she would be recognised for her commitment to the youth movement, Ms Gunn recalls bursting into tears of joy and shock.

Its absolutely amazing, Ms Gunn said. I do what I do for scouting, because I love to do it, she said. To be recognised in this way is very humbling.

Ms Gunn said it had been rewarding to work with young people and give them opportunities, such as learning how to camp or organising aid trips to developing countries, such as Kiribati and Timor Leste.

Scouting really endeavours to empower young people to become independent and responsible people in the community.

A stolen dog found in a Keilor Downs house on June 1 is living proof that every dog does have its day.

Police found the fully grown male spoodle, Big Red, while executing a warrant at a house in Pukaki Court.

Senior Constable Joe Catania and Constable Hannah Hearn also found drugs and stolen property.

Big Red was reported stolen in March from his Preston home, leaving his female companion, Daisy, and owner Ramona distraught.

Senior Constable Catania said Ramona was ecstatic to have her dog back.

Ramona has never stopped looking for Big Red and is pretty happy that hes nally been found.

Its not every day that police are seen in the media as doing something thats positive, Senior Constable Catania said. Its good to see something nice transpiring.

Ramona was overjoyed to have Big Red back aer what she said had been a dicult few months since he disappeared.

Weve spoken to the police on numerous occasions across the past few months and havent really got very far, she said.

It seemed that there was a little disbelief that dogs were being stolen.

en we met Joe and Hannah they were the rst people to actually take us seriously.

Ramona said the constables initially had some diculty convincing a magistrate that a warrant was needed for a stolen dog.

From what I heard, Hannah said its not just a dog, its Big Red.

A 31-year-old Keilor Downs man has been charged with the, handling stolen goods and drug oences.

With long and dark winter months ahead, Brimbank residents are being asked to get behind eorts to help more than 100,000 homeless Australians feeling the cold.

Brimbank shopping centre has teamed up with the St Vincent De Paul Societys winter appeal.

e centres retail marketing manager, Jenny Birt, said a vacant shop was being used as a temporary donation drop-o point for blankets, jackets, coats, sleeping bags, scarves and beanies.

We saw the opportunity to convert the hoarding [around the shop] into a donation drop-o point, Ms Birt said.

e hoarding has slots into which donations can be le. e shop is opposite the Satchi Patisserie.

    Were very community-focused, Ms Birt

said. And we see this as an opportunity to support the community. She said Vinnies not only helped the homeless but also many other people in need, and the centre was keen to extend its support to the non-prot organisations eorts among communities.

And Brimbank residents are already jumping on board with donations for the appeal.

Weve had some really positive responses, Ms Birt said.

Shoppers can drop-o winter items, new or of good quality, from now until Friday, June 19.

Ms Birt also encouraged people to go online and make monetary donations to the winter appeal via the shopping centre website.

    Time for warm hearts

    By Benjamin Millar

Services tackling family violence in the western suburbs face an uphill battle in the face of crippling funding cuts, a forum has heard.

e Family Violence Forum held in Footscray last Wednesday aired a number of frustrations hampering service providers and police.

e forum coincided with a record number of police referrals of family violence cases to Footscray-based Womens Health West 7629 in the past 11 months, or almost one every hour.

Forum participants spoke of womens reluctance to report intervention order breaches and their inability to leave abusive relationships due to nancial hardship trapping them in the family violence cycle.

Chronic shortages of psychologists, interpreters and mens behaviour change programs were also cited as roadblocks.

e need for greater funding of prevention programs in schools and workplaces and steps towards ending gender inequity were pinpointed.

Prevention of Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson told the forum the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence was a vital step towards achieving a long-term impact.

Ms Richardson said it was crucial to improve the way family violence was measured and to track whether progress was being made.

We need some sort of measure that will tell us how were performing over time, so weve come up with the Family Violence Index, she

said. e index will draw together data from the elds of crime, justice, health and education.

Ms Richardson singled out the complex and inaccessible court system for failing to keep victims safe.

e court system is a traumatising process. Intervention orders are oen not worth the paper theyre written on.

She also pressed the need for a greater emphasis on protecting children, saying the impact on children slipped from view.

We now know that childrens brains change in family violence situations and they are more likely to become perpetrators.

e gap between the federal governments rhetoric and action on family violence was also in the ministers sights.

Ms Richardson said the Abbott government was keen to talk about family violence but not so keen to provide funding. Service providers spend their time trying to get more funding as opposed to getting on with the job of protecting women and children.

e forum was organised by St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman and Footscray MP Marsha omson. If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit www.1800RESPECT.org.au.

Students at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children will soon make their television debut as stars of the Australian show Scope.

e students last week took part in lming for a Scope episode at the Werribee Open Scope episode at the Werribee Open ScopeRange Zoo.

Scope, a childrens science program produced in association with CSIRO, airs nationally on Network Tens Channel 11.

e segment featuring the students will screen later this year.

It will help demonstrate the zoos smartphone application, which provides those who are deaf or hard of hearing with a location-based tour of the zoo.

e free app includes sign language and English captions to create accessible learning experiences for students and visitors.

Students can use the app to scan QR (quick response) codes at animal exhibits, bringing up videos with captions and sign language to ensure they dont miss out on keeper talks.

Furlong Park principal Anne-Maree Crivelli said the students loved the experience.

Its without doubt a wonderful advancement, she said.

Ms Crivelli said the app allowed students to explore their environment independently and at their own pace, which also helped build their condence and improve their learning experiences.

e app was developed by the zoo in 2012 with support from Conexu Foundation and the Victorian Deaf Education Institute.

Bowel cancer is Australias second-biggest cancer killer and the Cancer Council is hoping Brimbank residents will take the initiative in reducing its toll.

A new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found that bowel cancer screenings pick up 83 per cent of cancers in the rst round of testing, with 90 per cent of bowel cancers curable if caught early.

obtained at pharmacies and used at home before being returned for analysis.

Eugene Arocca, chief executive of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport and former CEO of North Melbourne Football Club, received a bowel screening kit

Craig Sinclair, of Cancer Council Victoria, is enthusiastic about the eect the screenings have.

is test is saving hundreds of Australian lives each year, he said. Australia is lucky that we have free access to an eective test to screen for bowel cancer.

Australia is one of the rst countries in the world to have set up a national bowel cancer screening program.

Brimbank residents wanting to test themselves can use a simple kit that can be

when he was 50 but put o screening until he was 54.

When he nally saw his doctor, Mr Arocca was diagnosed with bowel cancer. e cancer hadnt spread to his lymph nodes and was treated through surgery.

Mr Aroccas message about the urgency of bowel cancer testing is simple.

If youre 50 or over, you need to do a simple bowel cancer screening test, he said. Dont procrastinate I did and it nearly cost me my life.

    A Proud Community Growing Together

Those of you who know me know how passionate I am about the environment and that Im a strong supporter of local groups that work to raise awareness of environmental issues within our community.Thats why I was so pleased

last Friday when Council celebrated World Environment Day by presenting this years Melton City Council Environmental Grants important revitalisation projects; raise awareness and engage locals in their environment. Id like to congratulate these groups and encourage residents to get involved with preserving our environment for future generations.Im also very excited that the annual Keep Australia Beautiful Western BACE and the Melton LEADS Program. The other two and the Vernon Davey Hut at Toolern Vale. The Koorie Student Garden, a wonderfully inspirational garden designed by the Melton Koorie Students Group, has been shortlisted in the Young Leaders category. The historic Vern Davey hut, Norwood, is an important piece of local history that was recently restored to its former glory. Norwood won the Melton Heritage Award this year and is now up for a Keep Australia Beautiful Award in the Heritage category.I wish the best of luck to all the shortlisted projects and hope that local residents get behind these great initiatives that help make our community truly wonderful. Please feel free to contact me on 0408 794 232 or email [email protected] or follow me on Twitter @CouncillorDunn.

Its hard to believe that its June already. With the warmer months behind us, its time to rug up and prepare for the chilly winter days ahead. Its been a busy time here at Council with a high number of openings and community events being held over the past couple of months.

Last week, we announced the recipients of this years Annual Grants Program at our Share Event held at the Caroline Springs Library and Civic Centre. It was pleasing to see our funding recipients recognised for the valuable contribution they make to our local community, and I take this opportunity to congratulate all of our recipients for their tireless dedication and willingness to help others. Council is committed to supporting and empowering local community groups and the event was a fantastic opportunity for members of our community to connect with other grant seekers and recipients, share expertise and be inspired by keynote speakers. Council has various grants available to residents and community groups throughout the year and I encourage everyone to look at these grant opportunities to see if your group or project is eligible.

Applications are also open for Councils Community Partnership Program 2015/2016. The program links community groups with others, to work in partnership to produce projects to their own cultural backgrounds within our community, I encourage you to apply for the program. Its a great opportunity to share your skills, experience and knowledge with others so we can grow together. For more information visit melton.vic.gov.au

Finally, on personal note, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my fellow Councillors, Council staff, friends and community members, for their heartfelt sympathies and unwavering support following the recent passing of my beloved mother. Your care and understanding has helped me through

Thank you for your continued support and please dont hesitate to contact me with any ideas or issues on 0412 584 067 or [email protected]
