A s students from Burwood Public school l e a r n e d

traditional Aboriginal dances and customs during a ‘Cultural Infusion’ afternoon, they would not have known that their teacher, Walangari Karntawarra, is an international award winning painter whose work hangs in the National Gallery of Australia. The Aboriginal elder hails from the Central Western desert but now lives and works in sydney and is also a gifted musician, teacher, public speaker and performer. He spent his early childhood living in the outback before obtaining two university degrees. Burwood Public school Year 3 teacher Joanne Mulligan organised the visit, saying that the children were excited to be more informed about Australia’s heritage.

Dame Edith’s enduring vision for homeless older women

IN 1897, dame edith Walker provided Yarralla Cottages in North strathfield for “gentlewomen in straitened or necessitous circumstances.”

under the legacy dame edith left for the Perpetual Trustee Company to administer, together with Mission Australia and Mission Australia Housing, the Yarralla Cottages were formally reopened on June 19 after extensive renovations and refurbishment to every cottage on the estate.

The 24 self-contained single occupancy cottages provides temporary accommodation for around a year for single, unaccompanied women aged 35 and over who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and offers safe, affordable post-crisis accommodation.

“our clients might have recently exited a long term relationship or marriage where they were financially dependent on their partners and all of a sudden find they have to fend for themselves with no income,” said leonie Green from Mission Australia. “Many have also fled domestic violence relationships.”

“They don’t have the money to buy a house or to rent and find themselves homeless,” she added.

each woman is assigned a case worker who provides support and advocacy for the client and assists them to achieve goals and ultimately to secure permanent independent private or social housing. Most clients are older women in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

The dame edith Trust was established to help women in the area..

“The need to help women is as relevant today as it was when dame edith set up the trust. The official opening today signifies the opportunity to have been able to bring this asset back to full use, with the assistance of Mission Australia, for the purpose of helping women,” Andrew Thomas from Perpetual Trustees said.

Canada Bay Councillor, Jeanette o’Hara, who has been associated with Yaralla estate for 28 years due to her long-term commitment to Meals on Wheels, represented council at the opening.

“The renovations and new furniture are wonderful. This accommodation, set in beautiful grounds, is a safe haven for many women,” Mrs o’Hara explained. “It is also marvellous to see many women here today who previously lived here and who have come back for the re-opening.”

one former resident spoke of how dame edith brought home cherry seeds from Japan and planted them in the Yaralla garden, where a tree survived for more than 100 years.

Perpetual ran Yaralla Cottages until 2010 before entering into a tripartite agreement with Mission Australia and Mission Australia Housing for the management of the cottages. Mission Australia is responsible for providing support to the tenants and MA Housing responsible for tenancy and asset management.

after a successful pilot program within Burwood that will form part of a broader national strategy to counter intolerance and extremism in australian society.

Funded by the Federal attorney-General’s department and developed in consultation with the NSW Police Force Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command and youth leaders, dPdVP will work to address issues of identity, create a sense of belonging and eliminate cultural isolation through educational

resourcing.The groundbreaking and successful pilot program for the dPdVP by Burwood Council in conjunction with other authorities provides a blueprint for working towards a more harmonious australia.

The board game and youth services maps that form the educational resources for the Project draw attention to the variety of opportunities people have to engage with the community, ultimately improving youth coping and response mechanisms through peer-to-peer learning methods.

the Burwood Council area, the dPdVP board game has been played by more than 130 students with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

A sustAinAble communityLast week, members of the Burwood youth advisory Group (ByaG) gave a presentation to Burwood’s Councillors on working towards sustainability in community facilities.By looking to deliver a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis, ByaG made several recommendations to us councillors on actions

IN A sIGN of the times, Burwood Book exchange will close its doors on 27 years of business as the economy bites and the internet claims another ‘High street’ victim.

The Book exchange’s ebullient owner Judy starr says she has loved every minute in her long-serving business but with the building (near Parramatta Road) being sold to developers it was time to move or close down.

“We looked at the figures from the last couple of years and saw a decline due to the impact of a combination of factors that include the economy, the internet and difficult parking conditions at this end of the road,” Judy explained.

“We’ve had a number of customers telling us that they are going to five dock or Ashfield to shop because of the Burwood parking restrictions. The lane closure in Milton street definitely

affected business here.” “The general economy is worse than is

being reported with people not having the money to spend on extras. They are being just so careful. The internet and ebooks have also affected regular book businesses. With a shop you have to pay rent, insurances and all those costs that aren’t associated with the internet.”

“We did look at moving into the heart of Burwood but the rent would be around $75,000 per year and for a minimum of five years, which wasn’t worth it,” Judy said. “But I’m not sad. We’ve had wonderful customers and I’ve loved every minute of our 27 years. There will be more time to spend with the grandchildren and to help my children and I’m looking forward to that.”

euRellA Community services has received $25,000 from the Australian Government to help get ready for a National disability Insurance scheme.

senator Jan Mclucas, Parliamentary secretary for disabilities and Carers, joined federal Member for Reid, John Murphy MP, at eurella Community services in Burwood this month.

Mr Murphy said eurella was among 64 successful recipients of grants worth up to $30,000 as part of the Australian Government’s NdIs Readiness fund.

The fund is part of a $3.1 million investment to help Australian disability enterprises prepare for the reform.

According to Mr Murphy, this funding will help eurella prepare for the changes ahead by helping with the costs of policy and procedure development.

“It’s important for all areas of the disability sector to be ready to make the change, including our Australian disability enterprises, which employ more than 20,000 Australians,” he said.

“We are committed to ensuring the disability sector here in Reid is well supported as we move towards this historic reform.”

Mr Murphy added that it is important for Australians with disability, their families and carers, to start benefitting from an NdIs as quickly as possible.

“for the first time, Australians with significant and permanent disability will receive care and support over their lifetime, regardless of how they acquired their disability,” he said.

THe NRMA has welcomed news that the M4 east extension has made a shortlist of four projects (M5 east duplication, M4 east extension, f3 to M2 link and f6 extension) earmarked for $30 million to be announced by Infrastructure NsW in september.

THe dRAfT plan of management for Concord oval, prepared by Reserve Trust Manager Canada Bay City Council is open for public comment, with the NsW deputy Premier and Trade Minister, Andrew stoner saying the plan would ensure the much-loved sporting precinct continues to meet the sporting and recreational needs of the community.

“Concord oval is synonymous with Rugby league, as the training headquarters for the Wests Tigers, and with Rugby union as the venue of the very first Rugby

World Cup in 1987,” Mr stoner said.

The precinct is home to many sports from Rugby union and league through to soccer and hockey.

The NsW Government contributed $30,000 toward the preparation of the draft plan, which includes extending the grandstand, improving the Cintra Park hockey complex and increasing recreational use and pedestrian access.

sTAff and parents at sydney Adventist College have been advised of a proposal to close the strathfield campus on Albert Road at the end of 2012 due to falling enrolments.

enrolments at sydney Adventist College have fallen from over 550 students to 146 students in 23 years with Pastor Michael Worker, President of the seventh-day Adventist Church in Greater sydney saying that the church leaders had thought “long and hard” about the proposed closure because of the historic significance of the College to Adventist education in sydney.

In a statement released to staff and parents, the Adventist Church said that the proposal had been developed in response to falling enrolments and the need to direct scarce financial resources to other

growing Adventist schools. “The company which operates

our schools has faced some very difficult financial challenges over the last ten years. While profit is not our primary objective, we cannot continue to sustain significant deficits. This situation and the uncertain economic climate have forced us to propose the closure of the strathfield campus,” Pastor Worker said. “The company is currently consulting with the 41 staff affected about the proposal but has advised that they do not wish to hold out false hope. Pastor Worker said, “We have given long consideration to what options might be available and we would not even be raising this proposal, given its potential

significant impact, unless we felt there was no alternative.”

A final decision on the proposed closure is expected to be made by June 30, after which the fate of the campus grounds can be decided.

Rumours that the site had been sold to the Australian Catholic university are untrue with a spokesperson saying that the site was, not on the market and that there have been no negotiations with the ACu, which owns land nearby on the adjoining st Patrick’s College campus.

“The proposal to close the school will be resolved by the end of June. There has already been meetings with College staff and two Parent and school Community Meetings over the last several days. There have been no discussions and no

The Adventist Church has said in its statement that it proposes to sell the property and use the funds to reduce debt and fund future projects in other Adventist schools in sydney.

“We must be able to redirect significant resources to those schools which are growing

and which urgently require additional facilities such as Macarthur Adventist College, Hills Adventist College (Kellyville Campus) and the relocation of Wahroonga Adventist school,” Pastor Worker said.

If the closure proceeds the College will provide counselling to students and parents about alternatives for completing their education.

A Year 12 student at the Croydon College, Rachael is thrilled at being selected to play the role of the Wicked Witch.

“I’ve always loved the larger than life characters of the show and the liveliness of oz,” she said.

“It all seems so magical. Being a part of this production has been amazing and given me the opportunity to spend quality time

with girls throughout all years of the school in my final year.”

director Greg friend said that the production would not stray too far from the original that everyone knows and loves. A dilemma for Mr friend, however, was how to create Toto the dog on stage. Puppetry soon solved the problem.

“Toto looks like a real dog complete with a control to open and close his mouth, run, sit and wag his tail,” said Mr friend.

“one of our drama students has been mastering the skills of a rod puppeteer and I think it is going to be a real highlight of the show.”

sTudeNTs from st Anne’s in strathfield south had a big night out this month when they took part in a live Telebridge link with astronauts on the International space station.

With the International space station (Iss) orbiting earth at 27,000 kilometres per hour, st Anne’s linked into the space station just as it flew over Argentina to make live contact with the astronauts for 10 minutes before the Iss moved out of range again.

Representatives of Amateur Radio on the International space station (ARIss) program presented to the students and their parents before the galactic phone call took place.

The remote Telebridge link allowed the school to participate in the call via normal phone lines. school principal Phillip Townsend described the experience as an extraordinary moment.

“Neither the rain, nor the second state of origin game, could keep the school community away from this once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said.

The experience has also gone a long way in motivating students to keep studying. eleven-year-old Jerek Villaruz, who wants to be a flight engineer, said he was further inspired to keep studying Maths and science to fulfill his dream after the experience.

“It was awesome hearing his voice while in space,” he said.

THe AusTRAlIAN Catholic university has lodged a development application for its strathfield campus for the construction of an underground car park in the north west corner for 292 car spaces. 30 spaces would be for use by st. Patrick’s College with vehicular ingress/egress from edgar street and the remaining (262) car spaces being exclusively used by the ACu with direct vehicular ingress/egress from Barker Road.

A strathfield Council spokesperson has said that council were advised by the NsW department of Planning to accept the application.

“We were concerned when we received the application from ACu,” a strathfield Council spokesperson said. “ The NsW department of Planning advised us to accept the dA and proceed with notification but that council does not have to assess or determine the application until

the NsW department makes their recommendation regarding the draft Concept Plan.”

“We can understand why some residents may be concerned, but we have no intention of assessing this d.A,” the spokesperson said.

In a blow to residents and strathfield Council, Planning Minister Brad Hazzard has advised that a Public Meeting – not a hearing – would be scheduled for early July.

A full hearing would allow residents and council represen-tatives to put forward their views and ask questions, which a meeting does not permit.

“This (a meeting) is disappointing from our perspective,” the strathfield Council spokesperson said.

HoW nSW is changing has been revealed with the first results from the australian Bureau of Statistics (aBS) 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Data gathered helps decide what funding is needed for infrastructure, community services and facilities.

The results show that the population of NsW is 6,917,658, up from 6,549,175 in 2006 – an increase of 5.6 per cent. The local government area with the biggest growth in the state is Blacktown, which now has 301,097 people up from 271,712 in 2006, a rise of 10.8 per cent.

The local government area with the highest proportionate increase in NsW is Palerang in the southern Tablelands, which grew 16.5 per cent to 14,351 people from 12,313 in 2006.

That housing in NsW is more expensive than the rest of the country has been borne out with data showing that the median household weekly rent has risen by $90 to $300 since 2006, an increase of 42.9 per cent. The national average rose more (at 49.2 per cent) but is still lower, at $285 per week than NsW. Median monthly household mortgage repayments also increased to $1,993 from $1,517 in 2006, an increase of 31.4 per cent. This compares to the national average of $1,800, which increased by 38.5 per cent.

Hospital data shows an increase of more than 30 per cent for sporting injuries during winter months. exercising or playing sport in cold conditions can lead to injuries such as sprains, strains and blisters and in extreme cold conditions snow blindness, frostbite and hypothermia can occur.

sports Medicine Australia spokesperson, dr david Bolzonello says wintry conditions should not be a barrier to exercising. All that is needed is good preparation.

“exercising in cold weather no doubt places extra demands on the body, which can lead to reduced sporting performance and injuries. However this doesn’t mean you have to stop exercising in winter. Most cold-related injuries can be prevented with good preparation and the correct equipment,” said dr david Bolzonello.

Those with a pre-existing medical condition affecting the feet, such as diabetes, should see a doctor before taking part in winter sports.

“By following these preparation tips your risk of injury will be decreased – to keep you enjoying being active throughout the whole of winter,” said dr Bolzonello.

loCAl bowling clubs have been dying a slow death since the 1990’s as many closed with a dwindling membership and increasing debt. Clubs on council land are now rare, having been sold off or their use changed forever.

Regents Park sporting & Community Club, with $1 million in debt and less than 50 members, amalgamated with dooleys in 2010 to save the facility and breathe new life into its ageing buildings and greens. dooleys have renovated the club from floor to ceiling with a complete interior refit, upgrades to the roof and electrical system and rebuilt two greens for members to continue enjoying their sport.

At the official re-opening of dooleys Regents Park sports Club on Wednesday June 20, the full extent of the environmentally sustainable and efficient building works was detailed.

“The Club was facing an electrical supply problem,” said Colin eisenhuth, dooleys Group Building and services Manager. “Rather than simply replacing dilapidated equipment with like-for-like and increasing the supply, we decided to make the building more efficient,

The bill to only increase electrical supply would have cost $185,000. By spending $250,000 on a range of sustainable systems such as solar photovoltaic panels, gas-driven air conditioning, window insulation and rainwater

tanks along with specialised paint to reduce the heat load and therefore energy consumption, the Club has moved into the modern age better equipped to serve its members and guests. sYdNeY showground and the Australian International Motor show Joint Venture have confirmed that the 2014 and 2016 sydney-based Motor shows will be held at sydney showground, sydney olympic Park.

The 2012 Aust ra l i an International Motor show in october will remain at the sydney Convention and exhibition Centre (sCeC) which is scheduled to close at the end of next year, in preparation for an extensive three-year expansion and redevelopment project – leaving the sydney shows in need of a new venue.

“Whilst the sCeC has been our home for twenty three shows, we are very much looking forward to the opportunities presented to us and exhibitors alike at sydney showground,”

burwood scene: How did you end up in the Torch Relay?simon: I drive for a stage coach bus in Cambridge and they were asked to nominate to participate as drivers. from there, the olympic Committee interviewed us and chose 10 drivers from over 1,400.

burwood scene: How did you feel to be chosen?simon: I was simply over-the-moon! I love england and it’s a great way of seeing the country.

burwood scene: What has been the response from the cities you’ve visited with the torch so far?simon: The atmosphere has been absolutely awesome. You never quite know how it’s going to be taken, but it’s getting bigger and bigger as we get closer to london.

burwood scene: You’ve visited places like Cornwall and Cambridge already, what’s been the highlight?

simon: Coming to the lake district – I’ve got personal reasons. Northern Ireland was also fantastic. The crowds have been phenomenal.

burwood scene: How difficult is it being part of the olympic Torch Relay?simon: It’s not physically draining. There are long days, but it’s so enjoyable.

Not even the winter weather can deter Rosebank College’s Lara Murray’s rigorous training regime as she prepares to represent NSW at the Pan Pacific Under 16 Water Polo Championships in New Zealand.

Lara will be the NSW Blue’s team number one goalkeeper after being placed into the squad at the NSW State Club Championships. Prior to the State Club Championships, Lara also competed in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges team in the Under 1 7 A l l S c h o o l s tournament.

“I am extremely happy to have made it this far,” she said.

“By being in the squad I am keen to develop new skills and techniques to save different types of shots. I am aware of the importance of training and working as a team”.

the Year 10 student joined the Drummoyne Water Polo Club Junior Development Program after seeing a notice in her primary school’s newsletter seven years ago.

There will be little time to recuperate from the championships as Lara will then compete in the National Club Championships in Brisbane.

PlAYeRs from Homebush Boys first-grade football team were stoked when socceroo and everton midfielder Tim Cahill was a spectator at their recent game at Mason Park as part of a promotional tour.

Cahill watched the entire game and was on hand to give strategic advice to the team who were tying with Randwick Boys high school at the end of first half. To cap off the day, Homebush Boys turned Cahill’s pointers into winners, dominating the game with a 6-2 victory.

Afterwards, Cahill talked with the students, naming Harry Griffin-Colls from Year 9 as man of the match before rewarding his skilful play with a signed jersey.

He also singled out Ricardo fradel from Year 11 for emulating Cahill’s signature goal celebration moves. Team members received a personally signed picture and he also donated a signed ball and Homebush Boys diamond Jubilee jersey for auction at the school’s fundraiser trivia night at Concord Bowling Club on saturday 11 August.
