Border Security Force (BSF)
In the aftermath of 1965 Indo-Pak conflict, the leadership of the country came out with alternative blueprint of dedicated Federal Force for securing Indian borders with Pakistan. Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then, Prime Minister constituted a committee comprising of General J N Chaudhuri, the Chief of Army Staff, Shri L P Singh, the Home Secretary and the Defence Secretary to draft the blueprint. Thus, Border Security Force was raised on 1st December, 1965 by embodying various State Armed Police battalions deployed on the borders under the inspiring leadership of Shri K F Rustamji, IP as its first Director General. With a humble beginning with 25 Battalions of State Armed Police of bordering states, today, BSF has emerged to be the worlds largest border guarding force with over 2,50,000 committed Seema Praharis.
BSF guards a staggering 6623 kms border of India with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Western Command of the Force is responsible for 2290 kms of land border, 237 kms of Line of Control (Loc) and 85 kms Coastal border with Pakistan. The Eastern Command safeguards 4096 kms of IB including 930 kms tricky and riverine borders with Bangladesh. Besides guarding borders, BSF has now been entrusted with the added responsibility to tackle the Left Wing Extremism in the States of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
These 50 years have been a glorious saga of valour, sacrifice and dedication where BSF has stood up to every challenge and emerged triumphant. During its Golden journey, BSF has played a pivotal role & contributed immensely to all facets of National security right from the day of its raising. BSF shouldered responsibilities such as election duties, aid to civil authorities during natural calamities, law & order duties with great aplomb. The force has also played a significant role in restoring peace and in smothering the menace of militancy in the State of Punjab, J&K and North-Eastern States for which the Seema Praharis earned gallantry medals for their acts of bravery. A total of 1551 BSF bravehearts sacrificed their lives in the line of duty to attain covetous and exalted position of martyr. The riveting and fascinating saga of BSF will always continue to be the hallmark of this elite Force.

BSF during its Golden Journey has played a pivotal role & contributed immensely on all facets of national security right from the day of its raising/inception. Indo Pak conflict of 1965 compelled the then leadership of the country to raise a dedicated federal force for securing Indian border with Pakistan. Raised on 1st Dec 1965 with a humble beginning with 25 Bns of state Armed Police of bordering states, today it has emerged to be the worlds largest border guarding force. This elite force has participated in all major border conflicts with Pakistan and internal security situation/operations since then. During the nascent years of its raising the force was tasked to assist Mukti Vahini for Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. It is on record that BSF was mobilized before the actual war had broken out during Liberation War of Bangladesh.
Since then the gallant journey of BSF is continuing in the form of fighting militancy and restoring peace in Punjab, counter insurgency operations in J&K and fighting insurgents in North East and now fighting Maoists besides its primary role of guarding Indo-Pak and Indo Bangladesh Border. To pay tribute to our martyrs in this Golden Jubilee year, we have compiled stories of valour and supreme sacrifice of BSF personnel in the form of a book, titled, BSF MARTYRS A LEGACY OF PRIDE AND VALOUR.
During this Golden Journey, 1551 BSF personnel have laid down their lives in the line of duty which speaks for itself about the commitment to national security, patriotism and high order of professionalism.
The supreme sacrifice of the Bordermen has been duly recognised by the Govt of India by awarding 1 Mahavir Chakra, 11 Veer Chakra, 4 Kirti Chakra, 12 Shourya Chakra, 231 PPMG and 870 PMG.
It is our solemn duty to ensure that families of our martyrs are looked after in the best possible way as is also the wish of our Honble Prime Minister and Honble Home Minister.
I am confident that Force will carry the legacy of its motto Jeevan Paryant Kartavya in the times to come too.

Inter dependence is a higher value than independence.
In the Golden Jubilee year of BSF, this book on BSF Martyrs is a
perfect tribute to our brave hearts who sacrificed their lives in the
line of duty. This book has been possible through the combined
efforts of large number of BSF officers and men, as compilation
of data spanning 50 years in a short time was indeed a herculean
task. I am grateful for the vision, wisdom and inspiration received
from Shri D K Pathak, IPS, DG BSF, who was the main driving
force behind this gigantic task that we had undertaken.
My sincere thanks are due to Shri K K Sharma, IPS, ADG(Ops)
BSF and Shri Rajni Kant Mishra, IPS, ADG(HR) BSF for their
valuable guidance and encouragement to make this endeavour
a success. Not to mention Shri O S Jha, DIG, Faculty of Studies
and his team for initial compilation of the data. Shri A D Abdali,
DIG (IT), Shri P Koshy, DC (IT) for IT related support for data
collection and compilation without whose efforts, this task could
not have been accomplished. My heartfelt thanks to Ftr IsG and
Commandants of all the Bns for sending valuable information
regarding our Martyrs in a short span of time.
My thanks to Shri A S Malik, DIG (Adm), Shri S S Chandel,
Comdt (Coord), Shri Sanjay Sharma, 2IC (Adm) and staff of
Adm branch for their painstaking and sustained efforts for
fruition of this magnum opus BSF Martyrs A Legacy of Pride
I must acknowledge the sentimental attachment and concerted
hard work put in by Shri Bhagavan Das, Ms. Manisha Shrivastava
and their team at Angkor Publishers (P) Ltd. for undertaking the
production of this monumental volume on a war footing.
Adequate care has been taken to incorporate the data of all the
martyrs upto April, 2015. However, if any information has been
missed, it is without any prejudice and such errors are regretted.

It gives me immense pleasure to know that in the golden jubilee year, Border Security Force is dedicating a book honouring the martyrs of the Force and has aptly titled it as BSF Martyrs A Legacy of Pride and Valour.
Such momentous occasions give us an opportunity to express our gratitude towards our brave hearts and recall the supreme sacrifice made by the border men during the most challenging times in the history of
this great nation. I am sure this book, dedicated to the martyrs of the Force, will be a true tribute and honour to the sacrifices made by them. I am indeed glad to see their gallant deeds have been penned in golden letters, which will be preserved for the coming generation as a treatise of heroic act.
I am confident that this book will act as a source of inspiration and enthuse our border men to render services for the motherland more devotedly and dedicatedly.
I wish the Force a grand success during the Golden Jubilee Year and hope it grows from strength to strength.
