Choosing a place to live whilst you attend Birmingham School of Acting may be a daunting task, especially if you are unfamiliar with the city.

BandDistance to BSA: 1 mile Radius

Travel Time: Up to 12 minutes walk

Typical Student Accommodation: Mostly large student accommodation providers such as Curzon Gateway or Jennens Court, or 1-3 bed privately owned apartments.

Advantages: A fantastic city centre location and only a few minutes walk to BSA. Living in the heart of the city offers exceptional shopping and night life.

Disadvantages: Choosing to live in privately owned city centre apartments means that although you will be living in great surroundings, you will be paying high end rents. Living in student “halls” can get a bit noisy, which may conflict with BSA homework and rehearsals.

Typical Prices: Halls start from around £100 per week and go up to over £130 per week, depending on the room. Most are en-suite with a shared kitchen/lounge and utility bills are included. Apartments range from around £600 to £1000+ per calendar month and usually have 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms. Utility bills are not normally included in privately owned apartments.

Band BDistance to BSA: 1-2.5 mile radius

Travel time: From 12-30 minutes walk, a 5-12 minute bus ride, or a few minutes by train (if available).

Typical Student Accommodation: Similar to Band A except there are opportunities to find housing that have lower rents. Lyttleton House for example, offers boutique living with all inclusive en-suite bedrooms and large screen TVs for £90 per week (see back page).

Advantages: Still within or near the city centre and with very easy access to BSA.

Disadvantages: As Birmingham is an ever-changing city, some areas are under redevelopment and consequently may not be the most attractive at the moment.

Typical Prices: There are still top end apartments available, but Band B offers a wider variety of accommodation including some (but not many) domestic houses, rather than just apartments. There are a number of private student halls including Opal 1, The Heights and IQ, starting at £101 per week and brand new studio apartments for around £160 per week, which are ideal for couples. House shares (which are rare) will cost around £75 per person, per week, plus utility bills.

Band .Distance to BSA: 2.5-4 mile radius

Travel Time: From 30-48 minutes walk or a 12-30 minute bus ride (depending on time of travel). Some locations

will also have Metro (tram) or train routes, which will significantly reduce travel times.

Typical Student Accommodation: Slightly outside the city centre with a mostly “house share” style of

student living. Certain locations, such as Hockley, have established themselves with clusters of BSA students all

living nearby. Edgbaston is very popular for students with a mixture from different campuses and universities.

Advantages: Often more affordable accommodation with greater choice, but still within reasonable commuter

distance to BSA.

Disadvantages: Slightly longer travel times and it is always advisable to fully research the area before

committing to anything.

Typical Prices: A house share will average around £65-£75 per person per week, plus utility bills. A higher or lower price than this average will reflect in the quality of

the property.

Band .Distance to BSA: 4-6 mile radius

Travel Time: From 48+ minutes walk, a 30+ minute bus ride (depending on the time of travel), or 20+ minutes by

train and walking.

Typical Student Accommodation: Mostly “house share” student living within some popular, traditional student locations, such as Selly Oak, Perry Barr and Harborne.

There is also a good choice of reasonably priced apartments and studios.

Advantages: Wider range of properties to choose from.

Disadvantages: Rush hour and train cancellations can increase journey times significantly and may impact

on BSA’s strict start times in the morning. Remember that being late for a class will affect your attendance record, as you can fail a module for poor attendance - see your

course handbook for more details.

Typical Prices: £65-£75 per person, per week, plus utility bills.
