Soil, Sediment and Fish Reference Materials (RMs) with BFR valuesCIL is currently involved in several projects to provide reference materials for the analysis of Brominated Flame Retardants. The first Interlaboratory study for PBDEs was organized by the Bromine and Science Environmental Forum (BSEF) in 1999. Subsequently, CIL has conducted several Interlaboratory Studies for PBDEs using our sediment, soil, and fish tissue reference materials. Over sixty government, academic, and commercial laboratories have participated in these studies, establishing Consensus Values for predominant PBDEs, Tetrabromobisphenol A and dimethyl TBBPA, α-, β-, and γ-Hexabromocyclododecane and PBBs in the following reference materials:

Polybrominated Dioxin and Furan Standards and Standard MixturesCIL maintains an extensive range of Polybrominated Dioxin and Furan (PBDD/F) and mixed Brominated/Chlorinated dioxin and furan standards and standard mixtures. Please refer to our product flyer on isotope.com (or contact us for a printed copy) to see a comprehensive listing of our PBDD/F analytical standards.

Brominated Flame Retardant Standards from CIL

The use of flame retardant chemicals has changed significantly over the past 10 years. Since CIL first introduced polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) standards in 1996, research has repeatedly demonstrated the potentially harmful effects that these chemicals may pose to human health and the environment, leading to the ban or industry withdrawal of most of the PBDE formulations. Despite the discontinued use of these products in many countries however, their persistence in the environment, long-range transport to even remote locations, and bioavailability define a need for continued vigilance.

In the wake of the exclusion of these products many new brominated and chlorinated replacements have been introduced. And with new evidence of biological and chemical debromination, many PBDEs that are not found at significant levels in the manufacturer’s technical products have become relevant as they are identified in various matrices. In addition to the flame retardant compounds themselves, many metabolic by-products have also been studied. CIL has worked closely with the analytical community to match interest in these compounds with the development of new analytical standards to assist further research in these areas.

CIL also maintains an extensive range of Polybrominated Dioxin and Furan (PBDD/F) standards and standard mixtures. These compounds are known combustion by-products, found primarily when industrial wastes are incinerated in the presence of brominated compounds such as BFRs, with toxic factors similar to their chlorinated counterparts. Please refer to our product flyer on our website (or contact us for a printed copy) to see a comprehensive listing of our PBDD/F analytical standards.

The following catalog contains product listings for current interest brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, as well as many metabolites and related compounds. CIL continues to synthesize new 13C-labeled and unlabeled flame retardants and related products, so please contact us to discuss your research needs, or to ask about current and future projects at CIL.
