Brent Grulke was the Creative Director for SXSW, a great friend and supporter of British music, and because of that love and support many UK artists were given the opportunity to play at SXSW and now enjoy successful international careers as a result.
Brent sadly passed away on August 13th 2012 and will be greatly missed by many. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank him for that tremendous support and love he showed for British music and artists, past and present.
In 2011 we invited Brent to write a piece for the British Music brochure at SXSW and we would like to repeat his words here to remind us all of a wonderful man and a true friend.
My colleagues and I take pride in all the British acts SXSW has helped make some headway in the United States. But it works both ways. Everyone is familiar with the story of the under-recognized American musician who goes to the UK where his or talent is finally – appropriately – rewarded, with Jimi Hendrix serving as the quintessential example.
Through the years I’ve been asked when I knew that South by Southwest had “made it.” I’m not a musician, and SXSW is not a band. Still, a moment sticks in my mind…
Travel is a perk nearly everyone relishes, but London Heathrow airport in the early morning is always, always, a hassle. I was on my way to an event in the UK. SXSW had been around long enough at this point that people were asking me if I’d come and speak on panels on various topics related to the music business. Despite the fact I felt this was usually a mistake on their part, I did my best, and welcomed the opportunity to hear new music, make new friends, and eat and drink the regional fare.
I’d landed and waited in the long queue (simply a boring Line in the States), and now I’d been pulled out, and found myself detained at some length at customs for the usual inexplicable reasons. I hadn’t slept on the overnight flight and was tired and getting annoyed, but only a fool conveys annoyance to customs officials, and I wasn’t going to be that fool that day, respect bordering on obsequiousness my guiding principle this A.M.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is success. My gratitude to the many British friends of South by Southwest that made this possible cannot be overstated. I owe you.

The BFC is once again hosting its annual reception to celebrate British film at SXSW and promote the UK as the best place in the world to make a movie. SKINNY LISTER(London)Skinny Lister are not your average, modern day, gentrified English folk group. Fronted by Dan Heptinstall and Lorna Thomas; a vocalist with a lusty cackle and flirtatious presence, the London based 5-piece hail from across England. Borrowing the nickname from the Lister family, pioneers in the use of anesthetic, the band have grown naturally and organically over the past two years.

MAN WITHOUT COUNTRY(Cardiff)This Cardiff based duo formed in 2007 create glacial guitar ripples spliced with electronic ambience and synth-pop pulse, yet have the ability to morph into a capital-A Anthem when you least expect it.

TIM WHEELER (ASH)(Downpatrick)Any band who puts Eric Cantona on their cover artwork deserves some respect, but reverence isn’t something these bona fide legends are short of. With 4 platinum selling albums a 26 track single series and having toured the world we are very proud to have Tim Wheeler along for the ride performing acoustically for us at SXSW.
THE LOST BROTHERS(Navan / Omagh)Beautifully crafted songs and luminous harmonies - and now 3 critically acclaimed albums. The third alum recorded in Nashville is produced by Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs and was released on his new label Readymade Records. They recently completed a national sold out US tour opening for Irish troubadour Glen Hansard.

PSYCATRON(Belfast)Psycatron are a techno outfit from Belfast who have appeared on some of the world’s leading electronic labels; from Carl Craig’s legendary Detroit based imprint Planet E Communications, Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings to Berlin techno powerhouse Tresor Records and R&S out of Belgium.
GIRLS NAMES(Belfast)Belfast-based four-piece Girls Names are a singular proposition. Their second album The New Life is the sound of a band on the fringes striving to forge their own path, purposefully out of step - and time - with their surroundings. The New Life is isolation laid bare, shot through with an undeterred sense of purpose and individuality.

NI@SXSWNI@SXSW is the collective brand for the Northern Ireland Music, Interactive and Film presence at SXSW 2013. 25 Music, Interactive and Film companies, one major feature film premiere and some of 2013’s most exciting showcase bands and artists.
The NI@SXSW PARTY takes place at The British Music Embassy, Latitude 30, 512 San Jacinto Blvd on Monday 11th March from 7.30pm.
Belfast City Council’s creative industries strategy, Creative Belfast, is designed to support those working in the fields of film, music, digital media and design to achieve their true economic and creative potential.
Northern Ireland and it’s cities of Belfast and Derry have created an intense soundtrack. From the stormy blues of Them and Van Morrison to the irresistible punk pop of The Undertones to the anthemic swell of Snow Patrol. Music is the currency of our time, used to express our rising fortunes and the pain of the past. Two Door Cinema Club are amongst the current coolest, while David Holmes is sound tracking Hollywood films, with attitude.
Belfast is on the rise, full of thrills, enterprise and culture. But importantly, it hasn’t lost its sense of self. The city has soul. Derry is pioneering a range of creative projects designed to set the city apart and to capitalise on its designation as the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013.

BASTILLE (London)Now signed to Virgin in the UK, Dan Smith’s band made an immediate splash with their killer single “Flaws” on Young & Lost Club. The band are currently in the middle of their biggest UK and European tour to date after selling out Koko, London in the Autumn.
WILLY MOON(London / NZ)Born in New Zealand but now very much established in London, Willy Moon’s breakthrough came with the ultra catchy “Yeah Yeah” that got a lot of love at BBC Radio 1 as well as featuring in an iPod ad. Signed to Island in the UK he’s also released through Jack White’s Third Man Imprint and Luv Luv Luv.
THE 1975(Manchester)Arriving at SXSW on the back of their “Music For Cars” EP and their debut single “Sex” Mancunians The 1975 are hotly tipped for 2013. Anthemic indie rock of life, loves and losses in the finest Northern tradition.

TALL SHIPS(Brighton)Arriving in Austin on the back of a truly triumphant Scala performance these West Country boys (now relocated to Brighton) meld the math of Battles and the pop sensibilities of Foals with a hint of Why?
LUCY ROSE(London)Sometime Bombay Bicycle Club collaborator, Lucy has just released her debut album “Like I Used To” on Columbia and after a strong festival season makes her first foray into the US with her band which features sometime Razorlighter Björn Ögren.
Y NIWL(Wales)Y Niwl are an instrumental rock band formed in North Wales in 2009. Originally a surf rock band, their style has progressed to incorporate a wider range of influences, though still retaining the instrumental aspect.

BRITISH MUSIC IS GREAT - UK TRADE & INVESTMENTThe success of the London 2012 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies illustrated exactly why the UK’s Creative Industries are looked upon as world leaders and with a range of artists from the last five decades performing, the originality and quality of our music was never more evident and showed why it continues to be a major influence on global tastes and trends.
The UK has a strong track record in developing and promoting the international careers of composers and performers and recently published figures confirmed that UK artists currently account for 1 in every 8 albums sold around the globe, and that trend is likely to continue with some GREAT new British talent being unveiled here at SXSW 2013.
The UK media are strongly supportive of the music industry and provide a range of rich environments for performers and audiences and UK Trade & Investment are therefore delighted to be co-hosting this showcase with BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens as well as sponsoring the British Music Abroad scheme with the PRS for Music Foundation amongst other activities.
HUW STEPHENSA broadcaster on BBC Radio 1, spinning the platters that matter on the wheels of plastic, both day and night, to millions of regular listeners. He’s been loving South by South West for 7 years now, and thinks it’s the best thing in the world (seriously). He was the youngest ever DJ on BBC Radio 1 at the age of 17 and curates the yearly Swn Festival in Cardiff, Wales UK, and stages at festivals including Latitude, Green Man and the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. He’s released Music Sounds Better With Huw compilations through Wichita Recordings, written for NME, Nylon and The Guardian, presented music shows for Channel 4 and curated music for Topman. His monthly nights in London have showcased new artists from across the world, and he’s DJ’ed across the world, including Venezuela, Sonar Barcelona and New Zealand. He was made a Dr. in May 2011, speaks Welsh and was recently married (sorry ladies).

REVEREND & THE MAKERS(Yorkshire)A Sheffield born and bred household name, the band have returned from a three year hiatus to release their fantastic new album “@reverend_makers” a soundtrack of sorts to their home town, an apolitical yet politicised paean to every day life.
CHARLOTTE CHURCH(Wales)Already a household name by the age of 13, she’s sung the world over for the regal and the royal, hosted her own TV show and presented on BBC Radio 2. Now having undergone an indie reinvention she’s just released her second EP cunningly entitled “TWO” featuring the awesome single “Glitterbombed”.
NZCA/LINES (Cambridge / London)Electronic odes to dislocation as he puts it, Michael Lovett’s slick R&B meets indie pop is classy and intelligent, exactly as you would hope for from a band named after Peruvian geoglyphs.

Music from Wales has gotten better than ever. So good in fact that Wales now has it’s own Welsh Music Prize. The Prize shortlists the 12 best records released each year before a panel of judges have the unenviable task of picking a winner each October. The shortlist is chosen from records suggested by 150 music writers and experts working in Wales. Last year over 70 records were presented for the shortlist. That’s 70 albums that these experts felt passionately about and felt were good enough to make a shortlist. 70. Seventy! Here at SXSW you’ll get to see maybe just half a dozen bands from Wales. Consolidating Scotland’s place at the very forefront of cutting-edge, contemporary music: it’s a pleasure to present two showcases again at SXSW 2013, on Wednesday night and Friday afternoon at the British Music Embassy.
With an ever-dependable track-record, we’re rightly famed for our independent heritage in the post-punk era. Modern exponents include Frightened Rabbit with their heart-on-sleeve, indie-folk anthems, and the bittersweet swoon-pop of Camera Obscura. As electronica takes further hold of the US, Scotland delivers some of the most astute crate-diggers, DJ’s, and producers on the planet in the form of Optimo and NUMBERS (represented by Jackmaster and Spencer). Young Fathers, newly contracted to the legendary Anticon label, bring SXSW their twisted electro and hip-hop; whilst the biggest buzz on the blogosphere, Chvrches, guarantee synth-pop perfection. Guitar-slinging troubadours The View finally make their debut journey across the pond with an armoury of hits at their disposal, and rootsy Glasgow combo Kassidy let loose their own country-blues melange on the land that invented this music. Waterboys legend and acclaimed songwriter Mike Scott has made the trip to play exclusive acoustic sets too – a treat indeed!
With young pups such as recent Fatcat records’ fuzz-punkers PAWS; impassioned, reverb-drenched rockers Holy Esque; and electro-indie oddballs Tango in the Attic bringing up the rear, Scotland continues to prove its ongoing success across all musical genres on record, on stage and online.
Come down and see for yourself. As well as the phenomenal music on display, you’ll also be met with a home-grown, hearty welcome and a wee dram in the Austin sunshine...

PAWS(Tain)Infectious, lo-fi, garage pop-rock that can quickly shift from cute melancholia to an unnerving territorial roar, contrasting between fuzzy noise and dreamy melodies. The band signed to FatCat records in 2012, releasing the LP “Cokefloat!” and which was followed by tours with the likes of Japandroids and Bleached.

CAMERA OBSCURA(Glasgow)The band have built a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and S.E. Asia. 4th album “My Maudlin Career” saw them signed to the seminal 4AD label with Pitchfork hailing lead singer/songwriter Tracyanne Campbell’s ability to “turn out maudlin torch songs with apparent ease”. TANGO IN THE ATTIC(Glenrothes)The band make their second trip in consecutive years to SXSW. Self-releasing 2 critically acclaimed albums since 2009, the band are currently at work on a third record. As Tango return to Austin, they’re promoting the new record by means of a taster EP, available for free download at their website.
KASSIDY(Glasgow)Over the past three years, they’ve released two albums and toured around the UK and International festival circuits. Currently writing the follow-up to their top 20 sophomore album “One Man Army”, they have been invited by Lana Del Rey to feature as main support on her upcoming UK and European tour.
HOLY ESqUE(Glasgow)Credited with being “Glasgow’s most exciting and inventive new band” by NME, as well as being armed with big riffs, thick crunchy bass lines and perhaps the most distinctive, yearning vocals ever heard; it’s set to explode in 2013 for the young 4 piece.

FLATSTOCKThe FLATSTOCK poster show series is presented by the American Poster Institute (API). It is an ongoing series of exhibitions featuring the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.
The API is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to serving poster artists and promoting the art form. Both the API and its FLATSTOCK series were organised in 2002 as a result of conversations between interested artists and supporters frequenting the popular website GigPosters.com.
The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties.
The FLATSTOCK shows provide the general public with an ongoing series of opportunities to see fine poster art in person and to meet the artists who’ve created it; they provide the API with a way to present the poster artists collectively while showcasing the breadth of individual styles they represent.

CHVRCHES(Glasgow)Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry are Chvrches. Three individuals bearing three distinct personalities on a consummate whole. Combining indie sensibilities and aesthetics with barbed pop hooks and and an unhealthy obsession with Prince, Chvrches take elements of classic electronica, hip hop and post-punk, and yet sound like none of the above. Their blend of classic and modern analogue synthesisers, bruised beats and crude vocal sampling came to the fore in their debut single THE MOTHER WE SHARE, released in late 2012, as it did in LIES, their first track that seeped onto the internet earlier in the year. Chvrches were voted #5 in the BBC Sound of 2013, and #2 in the UK Blog Sound of 2013.
FRIGHTENED RABBITS(Selkirk)They are proudly Scottish, and adored on native soil, but their songs also seem to take on greater resonance and power the further from home they travel. “Pedestrian Verse,” the band’s fourth studio album, has already earned a wide range of critical applause and a fervent international fan following with its emotional melodies and frank lyricism. KILIMANJAROKilimanjaro is one of the UK’s biggest national concert promoters. Independently owned but with the ability to take acts from small clubs to arenas and into football stadiums it also has a growing portfolio of festival interests. Kilimanjaro’s Steve Tilley is the UKTI music consultant and the company sends several promoters to SXSW every year scouting for acts to bring back to the domestic market.
The showcase bill reflects the diversity of exciting new music the UK is producing and Kilimanjaro itself, which not only promote shows but as part of the service also offers its artists a combination of opinion/advice, marketing strategies and those all important support and festival slots.
PRS FOR MUSICAt this year’s SXSW, PRS for Music is partnering with Kilimanjaro to showcase some of the best music the UK has to offer. Kilimanjaro will be bringing along The Crooks, Jamie-N-Commons and Luke Sital-Singh amongst others. PRS for Music supports its members in the UK and beyond while Kilimanjaro’s reputation for passion and commitment to the music industry makes it an exciting partnership. SXSW is a central focus for the export of British acts both to the US and worldwide. The British Embassy showcase is a great opportunity to show off how good a band can be.

THE ORWELLS(US)The Chicago fivepiece are frighteningly young and full of snotty-nosed punk attitude. As the scene digitised so too did the artwork, and the rock poster as artistic medium appeared to be lost. The 90s however brought with them a resurgence of rock poster design. This time round the poster was both advert and artefact, and acted as a unique artistic interpretation of a band’s music and limited edition merchandise. Fast forward to today and gig poster art has its own superstars and artist collectives are springing up all over
the world. This panel of practitioners and advocates will explore this thriving scene both from a local and international perspective.
