In any process system, it is much more cost-effective to proactively design for corrosion control than to reactively make repairs because of design deficien-cies. Until now, sanitary process system designers have been limited to 300 series stainless steels. These options have grown to include the super-austenitic stainless steel AL-6XN® alloy, as well as nickel alloys for sanitary tubing and fittings.

Central States Industrial has proactively respond-ed to the need for a more corrosion-resistant al-loy in sanitary process systems. CSI has a stocking program of Hastelloy® C-22® sanitary tubing and fittings, the superior alloy for many corrosion-plagued processes.

The corrosion resistance of any metal is only as good as its design limitations. For instance, austen-itic 300 series stainless steels perform exceptionally well in many of the standard food, beverage, and pharmaceutical environments. However, in appli-cations where chlorides are introduced to the pro-cess, upgrading to “superaustenitic” grades may be necessary.

Hastelloy is incorporated under UNS N06022, which also includes Inconel® alloy 22, 622, and AL-22.

Although AL-6XN alloy solves several corrosion is-sues plaguing processors’ systems, it is not the an-swer to all corrosion problems. Any alloy will fail when used in applications beyond its design limi-tations. The next level of corrosion resistance is Hastelloy C-22. In industries such as chemical, bio-technology, and pharmaceutical processing, both oxidizing and reducing acids, or chlorides and high process temperatures may be present. In these applications it is advantageous to use a nickel-based alloy such as Hastelloy C-22 due to its resistance to localized cor-rosion in these applications.

Hastelloy C-22 alloy is the most versatile nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy available today. With improved resistance to both uniform and localized corrosion, it will out- perform other nickel alloys, such as C-276, C-4, alloy 20, and alloy 625 in a variety of mixed industrial chemicals. Nickel alloys in general perform better than superaustenitic stainless steels (AL-6XN alloy, 904L, and 254 SMO®), as well as duplex stainless steels (2205 and 2507).

The finish designator is indicated in the CSI item number as a suffix. The suffix will define the finishing require-ments for that process component.

Each item number can have several different finish designators applied to it. For example:

Ngihebla^]Mn[bg`?bmmbg`l(PU)

The outside and inside surfaces of the tube shall be mill finish. Roughness requirements are not applied to this material.

F^\aZgb\ZeerIhebla^]Mn[bg`?bmmbg`l(PL)

The outside of the tube/fitting shall be mechani- cally polished to a surface finish comparable to a 150 grit or better and considered to be equivalent to a No. 4 finish as defined by 3-A Sanitary Standards. Roughness of less than 32 µ-inch (0.8 µm) is typical but cannot be guaranteed.

The interior of the fittings or tubing shall be drawn or mechanically polished to a 20 µ-inch (0.5 µm) maxi-mum finish. No interior surface finish reading above 20 µ-inch is acceptable.

Electropolishing may increase the Ra values post-pol-ishing, and have areas of preferential etching (frosting, shadowing, etc.). Final Ra values for electropolished tubing shall not be used as criteria of acceptance for this product.

Welding Hastelloy C-22

October 2014

General Welding RecommendationsWelding Hastelloy C-22 in many ways is similar to traditional 316L material. There are no spe-cial welding requirements or concerns, given that proper techniques and procedures are followed.

Hastelloy C-22 requires similar welding param-eters to 316L, such as the weld current and travel speed (IPM).

Welding Hastelloy C-22Any modern welding power supply with adequate output and controls can be used for common fusion welding. Generally, weld heat input is controlled in the low to moderate range. Stringer bead weld-ing techniques—with some electrode/torch ma-nipulation—are preferred. Wide weave beads are not recommended.

Nickel-based alloys generally exhibit sluggish welding and shallow penetration characteristics; so, the possibility of incomplete fusion increases. Care must be used to ensure that sound welds are achieved. Nickel-based alloys have a tendency to crater crack; so, grinding of starts and stops is recommended.

Cleanliness is critical when welding nickel-based alloys. Contamination by grease, oil, lead, sulfur, or other low melting point elements can lead to severe cracking problems. The welding surface and adja-cent areas should be cleaned thoroughly with an ap-propriate solvent such as 99.9% isopropanol (IPA). Prior to any welding, all foreign matter—grease, cutting fluids, crayon markings, scale—should be removed.

Ihlm&p^e]:gg^Zebg`In the majority of corrosive environments, C-22 products are used in the as-welded condition. Post-weld heat treatment—full solution annealing (1900°-2150° F) or stress relief annealing (1100°-1200° F)—is usually not required.

Jn^g\abg`To prevent the precipitation of secondary phases, rapid cooling is required after solution heat anneal-ing. Rapid air cooling can be used on sections thin-ner than 3/8” (9.5 mm), but water quenching is essential on material thicker than 3/8”, and is the preferred method for all thicknesses. The time taken to transfer the material from the furnace to rapid cooling must be less than three minutes.

Annealing is often performed after cold working operations to restore ductility if the cold work is above 7% outer fiber elongation. A full solution anneal at 1900°-2150° F is required for C-22; stress relief temperatures used on stainless steel (1100°-1200° F) are not effective and may actu-ally promote alloy precipitation detrimental to cor-rosion resistance.

Welding Hastelloy C-22Weld AppearanceWeld appearance can be somewhat misleading when visually compared with any hygienic welds made in 316L stainless steel. A typical Hastelloy C-22 weld will have slag islands in the weld bead. The discoloration on both the inside & outside of the weld is common at the heat affected zone. This is gen-erally darker than traditional stainless steel material. There could be light/dark spots on both the inside and outside of the weld, but this does not indicate an improper weld.
