historyUniversitas Nasional (hereinafter referred UNAS) is a Private University, the oldest private university in Jakarta and second oldest in Indonesia. Founded on October 15, 1949 at the initiative of some leading gures who gathered in Perkumpulan Memajukan Ilmu dan Kebudayaan (Promotion of Sciences and Culture Organization) or PMIK. The founders consist of: R. Teguh Suhardjo Sastrosuwingnyo, Mr. Sutan Alisjahbana, Mr. Soedjono Hardjosoediro, Prof. Sarwono Prawirohardjo, Mr. Prajitno Soewondo, Mr.Hazil, Mr.Kwari Katjabrata, Dr. Djoehana, R.M. Soebagio, Mr. Adam Bakhtiar, Mrs. Noegroho, Drs. Adam Bakhtiar, Dr. Bahder Djohan, Dr. Leimena, Ir. Abd Karim, Prof. Dr. Soetomo Tjokronegoro, Ali Budiharjo, Poerwodarminta, Mr. Soetikno, Ir.TH. A. Resink, Dr. Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, Noegroho, Soejatmiko, HB Jassin, Mochtar Avin, L. Damais, Mr.A.Djoehana, Miss Boediardjo and Miss Roekmini Singgih.

The Establishment of UNAS at that time was intended to accommodate high school graduates in Jakarta who would not enter the University of Indonesia’s created by the Dutch colonial govern-ment. In fact, amid the revolution for independence, UNAS was “the foremost fortress” of the struggle of the people of Indonesia in Jakarta. For their dedication, on UNAS second Lustrum in 1959, the rst President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, bestowed the title “UNIVERSITY OF STRUGGLE.”

At the beginning of UNAS in 1946, two (2) committees were established. The first committee in charge of investigating means to invigorate sciencesin the life of the Indonesian society, comprised of:1. Dr. Leimena2. IR. Abd. Karim3. Prof. Dr. Soetomo Tjokronegoro4. Mr. Ali Budihardjo5. Ir. Th. A. Resink6. Dr. Soemitro Djojohadikusumo

1. Nugroho2. Soejatmoko3. H.B.Jassin4. Muchtar Avin5. A. Djoehana6. Nona Budihardjo7. Nona Rukmini Singgih

The second committee in charge of stimulating cultural life, comprised of:

The initial eort was to conduct courses covering areas such as economics, sociology, politics, and philosophy, led by Drs. Adam Bachtiar. The courses were aimed at providing basic understanding of science for every citizen to fulll their responsibility in the independence. In the same year, in 1946, evening classes in high school were also held to provide opportunities for those who work in the morning. Following its development, various courses were established. As a consequence, in October 1949, at the insistence of 400 high school graduates of the Republic of Indonesia, PMIK announced the opening of AKADEMI NASIONAL (National Academy) that supervises ve (5) Faculties, namely: Faculty of Social, Economic and Politics; Faculty of Biology; Faculty of Mathematics and Physics; Faculty of Indonesiaan Literature; and Faculty of English Literature.

The choice to use Academy and not University was forced by the colonial regulation that was still applied in Jakarta at that time. PMIK’s initiative was positively and widely acclaimed at all levels of society. The rst modest lecture conducted on October 15, 1949 was a historical momentum for UNAS, so the date was set to be the birth of UNIVERSITAS NASIONAL. On December 22, 1949, the Ministry of Education and Culture, located in Yogyakarta provided full recognition and equality for AKADEMI NASIONAL with letter No. 548 / S. Based on the applicable legislation and regulation, on September 1, 1954, by the public notariat Mr. R. Soewandi, PMIK was changed to become Yayasan Memajukan Ilmu dan Kebudayaan (the Foundation for the Promotion of Sciences and Culture) or

Further development in UNAS is to form a number of institutions and centerscoordinated under Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat(the Institute for Research and Community Development) or LPPM.This institute aims to:

» Conducting coaching, development of science, education, technology and art through research activities.» Practice of science, technology, and art by increasing relevance of university programs to the needs of society through community service activities.» Other development is also done through the realignment of Faculties’ in UNAS based on applied government regulations, either by the merging or splitting of the Faculties under the applicable curriculum.

Since 2003, Universitas Nasional has maintained 9 (nine) Faculties with 23 Study Programs. Besides, there are two Academies with and School of Graduate Studies with 5 (ve) master programs and 1 (one) Ph.D program in Political Science.
