Assignment Title Ways Of Seeing

Purpose Of This Assignment This assignment will enable you to create a devised performance based on initial stimuli and evaluate the effectiveness of the performance.

Scenario As a company you will devise a piece of theatre based on the image you are given. The final piece will be performed to a live audience, must be between seven and nine minutes long and must not contain words of any kind.

Task 1: (LO1: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) (M1, M2) You are expected to understand techniques used to create material for a devised performance. You will be assessed on the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Research theatre companies that produce devised work and assess the ways in which their devised performances are used. (1.1)

Contribute to a variety of workshops focusing on a range of techniques for creating a devised performance. (1.2)

Evaluate the workshops. (1.2)

Discuss and select the most beneficial techniques for creating your devised piece. All decisions must be accurately justified. (1.3)

To achieve M1, devising techniques will be researched and then applied within workshops to test new material. To achieve M2, you will effectively contribute to a variety of workshops/rehearsals.

Task 2: (LO2: 2.1, 2.2) You are required to understand the process of translating a stimulus or commission into devised performance work. You will be assessed on the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Contribute to a debate session about your piece. Analyse the process of using stimuli as a basis for your devised performance. (2.1)

Take part in a Q & A session with your audience. Accurately explain the process of negotiating and finalising your devised performance from the original stimuli. (2.2)

Task 3: (LO3: 3.1, 3.2) (M3, D2, D3) You must be able to create and perform devised work for a target audience or commissioning group. You will be assessed on your performance and the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Create a piece of devised theatre suitable for ages 16 – 18. (3.1)

Generate an audience through successful marketing and advertising. (3.2)

Perform your devised piece to the target audience. (3.2) To achieve M3, the final presentation must be coherent, successfully communicated and appropriate for the target audience. To achieve D2, rehearsals, the generation of material and marketing of the performance must be conducted independently without the aid of a director. To achieve D3, the finalisation of the performance material must be made by the actor.

Task 4: (LO4: 4.1, 4.2) (D1) You are expected to understand the effectiveness of the created dramatic text in performance. You will be assessed on your contribution and the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Take part in a Q & A session with your audience. Obtain and record any critical feedback you receive. (4.1)

Contribute within the performance debrief. Discuss the effectiveness of the devised performance based on your audience’s critical feedback. (4.2)

Write an overall evaluation of the process. (4.2) To achieve D1, regular self-reflection and analysis will take place on the rehearsal floor and within the actor’s logbook.
