INTRODUCTION

The Sixth Annual Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval 2009 will bring 3 days of dynamic rhythms, dance,

film, soccer, Brazilian cuisine and the history of Brazil to the CA Central Coast and specially the California Riviera. The events will be held Fri/Sat/Sun, Feb 20, 21 and 22 at different places/locations and involving a local Night Club, Cafes & Restaurants, Dance & Capoeira Studios and Non-Profit Organizations. The concept of the Annual SB Brazilian Carnaval is to bring the culture of Brazil as a whole showing more than music & dance, including art and sport activities. Our goal is to create the perfect fusion between the Brazilian eclectic music, the exotic dance moves, the delicious cuisine, the entire country’s passion for soccer, and unique creativity & style of their people. The idea is to disseminate Brazilian culture among the Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties population.

Every year before the Catholic season of Lent and the arrival of spring, remarkable scenes like these are recreated worldwide. Individuals and communities honor the past and celebrate the present by playing out historical fantasies, making social and political commentaries on contemporary issues, and reveling in the fun of coming togheter – all in the spirit of the cherished global tradition of carnival. In this modern times Carnival are celebrated around the planet such as in cities like Venice (Italia), Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago), rural Laza (Spain), Vera Cruz (Mexico), New Orleans (U.S.), and in all parts of Brazil.

The Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval production team has been working to approach this strong worldwide market of Brazilian culture to Southern California since 2004. Every year we bring to Santa Barbara more international awareness of the largest country south of the border and the third biggest Latino community in U.S, of over 1 million Brazilians. Every year, our event involves over 30 performers in 3 days of events; which include live bands, Afro-Brazilian and samba dancers, DJ’s, capoeira groups and MC Guest celebrities. Since 2007, we have aggregated special participation of educators and/or filmmakers and/or sports personalities for lectures and discussion about the country.

Welcome and enjoy the “CARNAVAL” wave!

Brazil’s Carnival Hot Spots

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro

Pernambuco

Pernambuco

Salvador / Bahia

Pernambuco

The modern Brazilian Carnival finds its roots in Rio de Janeiro in the

1830’s, when the city’s bourgeoisie imported the practice of holding balls and masquerade parties from Paris. It originally mimicked the European form of the festival, over time acquiring ele-ments derived from African and Amer-indian cultures. During the Carnival, a fat man is traditionally elected to repre-sent the role of “Rei Momo”, the “king” of Carnival.

Internationally, Rio is considered the national Brazilian Carnival symbol. Or-ganized and impromptu celebrations is everywhere, but the Samba School Parade with many groups and floats, drummers and dancers in glittering, sequined, feathered costumes in front of your eyes is a must in lifetime. It is like watching Las Vegas on wheels. Premier and legendary samba schools like Mangueira. Salgueiro, Portela, Bei-ja-Flor and Mocidade Independente energize the crowd and brought them to their feet when they start sing they samba enredo (theme song).

But Bahia with their frenetic rhythms including samba-reggae and afoxé, plus Pernambuco with their unique Frevo style and Maracatu Afro rhythms has been taking for a while part of the “carnival cake”. In both cases Carnival is a time for total participation. City resi-dents and visitors dance together until dawn. This openness makes Bahia and Pernambuco Carnival different from Rio and other celebrations in Brazil.

In Bahia on the second part of the 19th century, the black population cel-ebrated the days of carnival in its own way, highly marked by African-Yoruba characteristics, dancing in the streets

playing Afro instruments. By the 70’s, three main types of carnival groups developed in Bahia: Electric Trios, Blo-cos Afros and Afoxés. Electric Trios are characterized by an adapted truck with giant speakers with a platform where musicians play Afro style song with the inclusion of electric guitars and other acoustic instruments. Enthusiastic folks follow the trucks singing and dancing. Blocos Afros were influenced by the black pride movement in the USA, in-dependence movements in Africa, and reggae music that denounced racism and oppression. The groups inspired a renewed pride in African heritage. The Blocos Afros entities formed especially during carnival which parade in the streets, dressed uniformly according to a theme. The afoxés are special blocos formed by people who belong to Can-donblé houses.

Pernambuco for a while has been recognized as a hot spot for the street carnival celebrations in the capital Rec-ife as well small cities as Olinda, Bezer-ros and Nazaré da Mata. In the historic city of Olinda (declared by Unesco as historical and cultural heritage of man-kind) the celebrations starts one week earliest and the attractions is the many

carnival groups with funny names such as: “Tell me you Love me, Damn it”, “The Midnight Man” - with a famous gi-ant dancing doll that leads the group, “Crazy Lover” and “Olinda’s Underpants” among others). In Bezerros, the carnival start ten days earliest with the formal Municipal Ball on Wednesday followed in the wee hours of morning by the “Wake Up Bezerros” revelry, when rev-elers leave their homes to celebrate in their pajamas or other nightwear. Still on the previous week, there is a Fellini-like “Pedalando o Papangú” for masked bike riders. Fat Tuesday there is a lively soccer match where all of the players must wear masks. Bezerros is the land of “Papangús” or “Masquerades”. In Naz-aré da Mata you will find the original Afro-Brazilian unique rhythmus of Ma-racatu.

The freedom to party in the streets is a unique experience for all and in spe-cial for those that are not Brazilians. It seemed like the whole city had come to a stop to join in the spirit of Carnaval.
