Founded in 1903, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is a registered charity and the UK’s largest

voluntary sector provider of adult education. We have a strong social purpose, dedicated to bringing great

teaching into the heart of local communities.

The WEA provides high quality, student-centred and tutor-led education for adults from all walks of life.

Over 3,000 volunteers, 2,000 part-time tutors and our active membership contribute to our education provision.

Education is life-enhancing and life-changing – improving health, self-confidence and creating

positive change for individuals and communities.

The WEA aims to tackle economic and social disadvantage, raise aspirations and help people make a difference to their own lives through education. Students don’t have

to be members, but becoming a member provides more opportunities to get involved.

This booklet was written by the students of Bankfoot’s ESOL class as part of their work on “The Community”. The topics they wrote about

are ones they decided were important, especially for people just arriving in the country. All learners

participated, working in pairs or small groups. They all helped each other so that even learners

who struggle to write were able to contribute. They hoped to help other people by sharing information

they have discovered since moving to Bradford from their own countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Classes

There are English classes in Shipley College.You can learn English in Shipley College two days a week. There are classes in Bradford College.Bankfoot School – there are English classes and sewing classes. If you want to learn English then you can come Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1.00pm. If you come to sewing class, join the Wednesday group 1.00pm to 3.00pm. Ask at the School.Mayfield Centre – there are English classes and sewing classes. Also computer classes.

Healthy activities

l For health, eat healthy food. l Use the plan “Five a day”. That means eat more fruit and vegetables.l Use olive oil instead of butter and ghee.l Join sports clubs, like football.l Drink fresh water.l Avoid fizzy drinks and chocolate.l Do a walk after every meal.l Don’t eat fries.l Eat grilled food.l Do exercise every day.l Go to the park for a walk every morning because in the park you get fresh air.l Don’t eat takeaway food because that’s very unhealthy.l Drink fresh fruit juice.l Don’t eat pasta.l Don’t eat fried chips.l Don’t use tinned foods.

Noisy Neighbours

My neighbours are very noisy.Sometimes I am stressed because of my neighbours.My next door neighbours are fighters.My neighbours are listening to loud music all night.I suffer in silence because I don’t like to fight with any one.

In Bradford there are many schools. These are Bankfoot School, Marshfield School, Horton Park Primary School, Bowling Park School, Newby Primary School and St Stephen’s C of E Primary School.In Bradford there are many colleges and academies.The se are Bradford College, Grange Technology College and Dixon’s Academy.
