It’s been a year since Thomas sent shockwaves through the movie industry by turning to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter to help finance a movie based on his cultishly adored but short-lived high-school detective series. On Friday, the movie hits theaters and video-on-demand. As the first high-profile celebrity project to drum up money on Kickstarter, “Veronica Mars” is a trailblazer, albeit one with a cloudy legacy.

Thomas has already been followed by projects by Zach Braff (to fund his second directorial effort) and Spike Lee (to raise cash for his latest “joint”). The land rush into a new avenue of funding (a major struggle for most filmmakers) has raised questions about the ethics of fan-based financing. AUSTIN, Texas — Samsung got its money’s worth from Jay Z and Kanye West. Two of rap’s top stars combined for a powerful, hit-filled two-hour show Wednesday night and Thursday morning during South By Southwest, allowing Samsung to steal some of iTunes’ lus-ter at the annual music conference and festival.

Samsung announced the Austin Music Hall show early this week and scheduled the pair at the same time as the iTunes Festival’s hip-hop night that featured Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q at the very nearby ACL Moody Theater. The performance came a few weeks after West called out Apple CEO Tim Cook at a New Jersey concert, telling him to “stop trying to get performers to play your festival for free, you are rich as (expletive).”

Chances are West and Jay Z didn’t play the show for free, but the return on investment wasn’t marginal. The show was one of the most anticipated surround-ing the annual buzz-building gathering and fans with Samsung devices with the company’s new streaming music service, Milk Music, were granted free entry.

fake banknotes were in circulation in the region of East Java. A total of 22.85 percent of fake banknotes was found in the region. Then, it was followed by the Greater Jakarta (20.71 percent), West Java (15.23 percent), Central Java (13.19 percent) and Jogjakarta (12.30 percent). Findings of the fake banknotes throughout the year 2013 were based on 58 reports from the public.

Government through the Bank Indonesia (BI) and the National Police Criminal Investigation continued to urge the public to be vigilant against the circulation of fake banknotes. Similarly, it also asked the public who found the counterfeit money to immediately report to police or BI in order it could be investigated in relation to the loca-tion for preventing further victims. However, the loss of the fake banknote owners or the people reporting the fake banknotes would not be replaced by the BI. This condi-tion made it difficult to diminish the circulation of fake banknotes in Indonesia. (059)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Observation in the field on Wednesday (Mar 12) indicated the atmosphere in Singaraja town was deserted. Leading road sections were only preoc-cupied by vehicles of residents that would like to worship. In addition, the activities in traditional markets, shops and government office were closed for the whole day.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at graveyard seemed different. From early morning, people began to come to graveyard with relatives and family. One of the graveyards at Bule-leng customary village looked crowded with people who would like to worship. the rubbish at a number of tem-porary disposals (TPS) has ac-cumulated and is not transported to final landfill. This condition is inevitable because the transport officers employed by the Bule-leng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) took day off co-inciding with the Pagerwesi Day, Wednesday (Mar 12). As a result, the volume of waste increased and even ran over to roadside.

Observation of Bali Post last Tuesday indicated that one of the disposal sites filled with rubbish occurred to Galiran hamlet, Bak-tiseraga village, Buleleng. The temporary disposal site is located

right at the cemetery of Baktiser-aga customary village and exactly at the SDN 1 Baktiseraga primary school. Half of the temporary disposal site had been filled with piles of rubbish. However, since it was not transported to landfill, residents were forced to dispose their rubbish outside the disposal site. Rubbish was piling up on sidewalk and spilling onto the road. Aside from being produced by native residents, most rubbish was also generated by migrants who lived in the residential area (BTN) of Baktiseraga village and surrounding areas.

A scavenger, Komang Mar-tiani, said the piling up rubbish happened because the garbage

trucks had not been in operation since Tuesday (Mar 11). She did not know why the trucks did not operate. Usually, the garbage truck arrived at the temporary disposal site at 07:00 a.m. where she was looking for used goods.

As a result, the rubbish con-tinued to increase and perished. Residents who disposed rubbish put the bags on sidewalk and on the street. Even, the volume of rubbish would continue to grow especially on Pagerwesi compared to usual days. “I am looking for junks every day and the truck hauling rubbish has not come within the past two days. By and large, the truck has arrived at 07:00 a.m. and the rubbish does

not spill onto the roadside like this,” she said.

Other than at Baktiseraga vil-lage, the rubbish piled up on the roadside because it had not been transported to landfill as found on Jalan Singaraja-Seririt, precisely at Tukadmungga village, Buleleng. There was not disposal site at this location, but people persisted on disposing rubbish at roadside so it covered up the drain in the south of the road.

The rubbish having piled up from a few days was then burned. People only burned the dry rub-bish. Meanwhile, the wet rubbish was beginning to perish and spread unpleasant scent. “We do not know why the garbage truck does not

transport the rubbish whereas it passes through this area every day. Probably, since there is no disposal site or something else, the rubbish is disposed into the gutter. Since today is holiday the volume of rub-bish increases and the drain cannot hold it,” said a resident.

As observation, the parking lot of the garbage truck owned by the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency at Banyun-ing, Singaraja, seemed closed. A number of yellow trucks were parked neatly. Then, the employ-ees were given day-off because it coincided with the Pagerwesi Day. The garbage truck would be back into operation on Thursday morning (Mar 13). (mud)

This tradition is still preserved so far and not only on Pagerwesi, but also on Galungan and Kuningan where Buleleng residents also put offerings in the form of food oblation (punjung) for their ancestors who have not been cremated yet.

Before starting the prayers, residents cleaned up first the grave of their family. After that, people put their food of-ferings having been prepared over the grave. There were no priests or higher priests who led the prayers at the graveyard on Pagerwesi, but residents held their worship without the chanting of mantras. Residents conveyed their prayers to the ancestors to invoke bless-ings and well-being on the Pagerwesi. “This tradition has passed through generations and the worship is usually made by family whose members have not been cremated yet. Thus, today they are brought offer-ings to the graveyard,” said of one the residents, Rudi.

After the prayers, people did not directly leave the graveyard, but took a rest at graveyard area. Each people’s group then held a

small party around their family grave. The food offerings having been delivered was then imme-diately eaten out. They were also

mutually exchanging their food, so the familial atmosphere and brotherhood among them was well established. (mud)

The Oscar winning pair — whose exact relationship is the subject of speculation — were both invited by the Italian designer to attend her plastic-wrapped fall-winter Miu Miu show in Paris.

It was full of young, fun and colorful suggestions on how to keep warm and dry during fall and winter. See-through pale blue PVC skirts came alongside a bright yellow raincoat with sporty tassels.

Or waterproof sheer red hook-er boots that somehow remained classy were mixed up with skiing shades and quilted pastel ski jack-ets. Not all the looks worked, but there were some great black and white fur maxi coats. Besides, you have to admire this iconic designer’s talent. Who else could mix a classic pale yellow pleated silk skirt 1950s with a multicol-ored see-through anorak and still make it work?

LOUIS VUITTON DEBUT

With a soundtrack featuring cat “meows” and lyrics such as “my fangs are sharp like barbs,” was Ghesquiere second-guessing reactions to his show? As it hap-pens there shouldn’t be too many claws out since the former Balen-ciaga designer did quite well. It was a saleable collection, but his debut at Louis Vuitton was by no means a triumph.

After a start that felt a little un-developed, or lacking in energy, the 42-year-old found his voice in a great series of sometimes sparkling miniskirt silhouettes channeling the end of the Sixties or the early Seventies.

It’s a style one fashion editor described as neo-Mod: A-line minis, a cinched waist with leather belt and strap pointing down like a tie, alongside a V-shaped 70s collar. This muse produced the best look: a sexy, clean-looking navy and black mini dress with blue suede panels on the bust and riding boots.

A strange feeling pervaded

the understated show — perhaps it was because the memory of Marc Jacobs’ theatrical fashion spectacles was still very much on peoples’ minds. After all, Jacobs spent 16 years at the house, and his shows are — quite literally — a hard act to follow.

On that account, he hoped the leaders of Bali had the spirit of entrepreneurship. If they had, various innovations could be done to save the farmers. The leader as an

executor should have such a spirit because the official as the head of the agency did not dare make policy. By all means, the policies applied should be siding with farmers.

“For example, the government can team up with investors engaging in the agricul-ture or plantations. This is certainly a very positive step for farmers. Court upholds Delhi rapists’ death sentences

sessing 10 kg of marijuana, Abdi Gultom, 28, had to bear all his actions. The man staying at Jalan Rangsana 17 Pesanggaran, South Denpasar, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, Tuesday (Mar 11).

In the trial at the Denpasar District Court, the sentenced imposed by the judge was considered fairly light in terms of evidence presented at trial. In the ruling, the panel of judges chaired by Wanugraha stated the defendant was found guilty and convinced as well as unlawful because he planted, cultivated, owned or provided narcot-ics belonging to first category in the form of plant. For the offense, the defendant was charged under Article 111 paragraph (2) of the Law of the RI No.35/2009 on narcotics. Other than physical punishment for 12 years, the judge also sentenced the defendant to pay a fine of IDR 8 billion. And if it was not paid, it could be substituted with four-month subsidiary impris-onment.

The verdict was lower than the prosecution. Earlier, the public pros-ecutor Ni Wayan Yusmawati charged the defendant more than 12 years. Against the verdict, both defendant and prosecutor stated to accept.

Previously, in the fact of the trial was revealed that defendant was arrested on November 5, 2013 on Jalan Ma-taram Gang Suli 2 Kuta. The arrest began from a report if the defendant often trafficked drugs.

Armed with that information, police immediately conducted an investigation. At that time, the officers continued to monitor the movement of the defendant. Once the target was believed to be in front of the eyes, police immediately arrested him.

BEIJING — China will keep this year’s economic expansion strong enough to create new jobs but will emphasize market-opening reform and cleaning up smog-choked cities over hitting its official growth target, the premier said Thursday.

Li Keqiang’s comments reinforced the ruling Communist Party’s pledge to shift to cleaner, more sustainable growth based on domestic consumption and service industries instead of trade and invest-ment.

Speaking at a news conference, Li said Beijing will keep growth in the world’s second-largest economy strong enough to fulfill plans to create 10 million jobs. But he said Chinese leaders are “not preoccupied” with hitting their official target of 7.5 percent growth in gross domestic product.

“What we care more about is the livelihood of our people,” Li said. “The GDP growth we want brings real benefits to our people, helps raise the quality and efficiency of economic development and con-tributes to energy conservation and environmental protection.”

Consumer spending is rising but not as fast as Bei-jing hoped. That prompted the government to launch a mini-stimulus last year with higher spending on railway construction. But Li has said any further gains have to come from longer-term reforms.

Li affirmed government plans to ease tax and regulatory burdens on entrepreneurs and open mar-kets such as health care and financial service that are dominated by the state.

“Some government departments will find fewer powers in their own hands and in boosting market competition and easing market access, some existing companies will feel greater pressure,” Li said. “We will carry out reform without hesitation.”

The premier was trying to strike a balance be-tween emphasizing the leadership’s shift away from growth at all costs and reassuring companies the economy would not be allowed to slow too much, said Joseph Cheng, a political analyst at the City University of Hong Kong.

Li promised to “declare war” against smog that is choking Chinese cities, and corruption, both of which are focal points of public anger at the ruling party.

China has “zero tolerance” for corrupt officials and will punish them “to the fullest extent,” Li said.

However, Li gave no indication the ruling party will allow independent checks on officials, a measure anti-graft experts say would be more effective.

Li warned regulators will face punishment if environmental enforcement is found to be lax.

“We can’t just sit here and wait for the wind or rain to drive the smog away,” Li said.

This year’s legislative meeting was overshadowed by a terror attack on March 1 in the southwestern city of Kunming just before the session opened, as well as Saturday’s disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet with Chinese passengers aboard.

In a widely anticipated move, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand lifted the official cash rate (OCR) 0.25 points to 2.75 percent and said it planned more hikes in an economy that was growing with “considerable momentum”.

Khin Maung Lay is one of many Myanmar journalists who last year embraced the chance to produce independent daily newspapers free from censorship for the first time in five decades. It was not the government that shut him down, but economics: His paper and others have been los-ing money as they struggle to compete with state-owned papers for advertisers and circulation.

“It breaks my heart,” said Khin Maung Lay, who has been part of the country’s ever-shifting media landscape for most of his 82 years and was jailed repeatedly when it was under military rule. “Today is my real last day as a newsman.”

One year after publishers and editors took advantage of a decision by the country’s nominally civilian government to lift a half-century-old ban on private dailies, the feeling of euphoria is fading.

Khin Maung Lay’s paper, Golden Fresh Land, published its last edition Wednesday. It is the first well-known private daily to fold, but 11 others that are still publishing also appear to be struggling.

“All the daily newspapers except the pro-junta party newspapers are running at a loss,” said an editor-in-chief of one of the most popular private dailies. He asked not to be named because he was not authorized to comment by management. “We are losing around 3 million kyat ($3,000) every day and many smaller papers are in the red too. Some can barely survive,” he said.

The more popular private dailies sell about 80,000 copies per day, far less than the three state-run newspapers, which all have circulations of more than 320,000.

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc was left feeling frustrated and let down by some of his players after a scrappy 2-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen sealed a Champions League quarterfinal slot for the second straight season. PSG made a poor start and mid-fielder Sidney Sam gave Leverkusen a flicker of hope with a well taken goal after six minutes. Brazilian defender Marquinhos equalized soon after and Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi continued his fine form with the winner in the 53rd minute.

But Blanc felt his team had switched off after the first leg, which PSG won 4-0 for a crushing 6-1 aggregate win. “It’s all well and good saying to the players ‘forget the first game’ but it’s true that subconsciously you tell yourself you’ve got a bit of a cushion,” Blanc said. “But there were players out there who don’t play that much and you have to show your best level. The Champions League is a level above and I was expecting more from my team.”

With Blanc resting several players, midfielders Yohan Cabaye, Adrien Rabiot and Javier Pastore were given starts, while Marquin-hos replaced countryman Alex in central defense. Christophe Jallet stepped in for the injured Gregory van der Wiel at right back. Given a chance to shine, Pastore was disappointing.

“We didn’t play very well. I was expecting a bit more. But the essential thing is that we’re through,” Blanc said. “You could put it down to a lack of experience or a lack of preparation, yet we did prepare the match properly.” Still, he remains optimistic that his team can contend for the trophy.

“I think since last year our opponents fear us more and more,” Blanc said. “We’re seen as a club that can go very far in this competition. We’re not going to content ourselves with reaching the quarterfinals.” Leverkusen had midfielder Emre Can sent off for a second yellow card with a little more than 20 minutes left.

But PSG will have to do better in defense in the quarterfinals, with Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes missing a first-half penalty.

By evening, rescue workers finally began the search for victims amid the broken bricks, splintered wood and mangled metal after firefighters spent most of the day dousing the flames. The recovery was facing hardship in the form of the weather, which was expected to drop below freezing with rain. Some parts of the debris pile were inaccessible because of a sink-hole caused by a subsurface water main break, officials said.

of Central Park, erupted about 9:30 a.m., around 15 minutes after a neigh-boring resident reported smelling gas, authorities said. The Con Edison util-ity said it immediately sent workers to check out the report, but they didn’t arrive until it was too late.

The explosion shattered win-dows a block away, rained debris onto elevated commuter railroad tracks close by, cast a plume of smoke over the skyline and sent people running into the streets. “It felt like an earthquake had rattled my whole building,” said Waldemar Infante, a porter who was working in a basement nearby. “There were glass shards every-where on the ground, and all the stores had their windows blown out.”

Like several other neighbors, Ri-vera said they started smelling gas Tuesday night. “The smell of gas was there since yesterday night,” he said. Hunter College identified one of the people killed in the blast as Griselde Camacho, a security officer who worked for the college since 2008.

Another of the people who died was Carmen Tanco, 67, a dental hygienist. Police identified the third fatal victim as Rosaura Hernandez-Barrios, 21.

His once-bustling newsroom was quiet. Some reporters cleared their desks while others tried to cheer up their boss with words of gratitude, or even some homemade pork stew.

Khin Maung Lay is one of many Myanmar journalists who last year embraced the chance to produce independent daily newspapers free from censorship for the first time in five decades. It was not the government that shut him down, but economics: His paper and others have been los-ing money as they struggle to compete with state-owned papers for advertisers and circulation.

“It breaks my heart,” said Khin Maung Lay, who has been part of the country’s ever-shifting media landscape for most of his 82 years and was jailed repeatedly when it was under military rule. “Today is my real last day as a newsman.”

One year after publishers and editors took advantage of a decision by the country’s nominally civilian government to lift a half-century-old ban on private dailies, the feeling of euphoria is fading.

Khin Maung Lay’s paper, Golden Fresh Land, published its last edition Wednesday. It is the first well-known private daily to fold, but 11 others that are still publishing also appear to be struggling.

“All the daily newspapers except the pro-junta party newspapers are running at a loss,” said an editor-in-chief of one of the most popular private dailies. He asked not to be named because he was not authorized to comment by management. “We are losing around 3 million kyat ($3,000) every day and many smaller papers are in the red too. Some can barely survive,” he said.

The more popular private dailies sell about 80,000 copies per day, far less than the three state-run newspapers, which all have circulations of more than 320,000.

BEIJING — China will keep this year’s economic expansion strong enough to create new jobs but will emphasize market-opening reform and cleaning up smog-choked cities over hitting its official growth target, the premier said Thursday.

Li Keqiang’s comments reinforced the ruling Communist Party’s pledge to shift to cleaner, more sustainable growth based on domestic consumption and service industries instead of trade and invest-ment.

Speaking at a news conference, Li said Beijing will keep growth in the world’s second-largest economy strong enough to fulfill plans to create 10 million jobs. But he said Chinese leaders are “not preoccupied” with hitting their official target of 7.5 percent growth in gross domestic product.

“What we care more about is the livelihood of our people,” Li said. “The GDP growth we want brings real benefits to our people, helps raise the quality and efficiency of economic development and con-tributes to energy conservation and environmental protection.”

Consumer spending is rising but not as fast as Bei-jing hoped. That prompted the government to launch a mini-stimulus last year with higher spending on railway construction. But Li has said any further gains have to come from longer-term reforms.

Li affirmed government plans to ease tax and regulatory burdens on entrepreneurs and open mar-kets such as health care and financial service that are dominated by the state.

“Some government departments will find fewer powers in their own hands and in boosting market competition and easing market access, some existing companies will feel greater pressure,” Li said. “We will carry out reform without hesitation.”

The premier was trying to strike a balance be-tween emphasizing the leadership’s shift away from growth at all costs and reassuring companies the economy would not be allowed to slow too much, said Joseph Cheng, a political analyst at the City University of Hong Kong.

Li promised to “declare war” against smog that is choking Chinese cities, and corruption, both of which are focal points of public anger at the ruling party.

China has “zero tolerance” for corrupt officials and will punish them “to the fullest extent,” Li said.

However, Li gave no indication the ruling party will allow independent checks on officials, a measure anti-graft experts say would be more effective.

Li warned regulators will face punishment if environmental enforcement is found to be lax.

“We can’t just sit here and wait for the wind or rain to drive the smog away,” Li said.

This year’s legislative meeting was overshadowed by a terror attack on March 1 in the southwestern city of Kunming just before the session opened, as well as Saturday’s disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet with Chinese passengers aboard.

In a widely anticipated move, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand lifted the official cash rate (OCR) 0.25 points to 2.75 percent and said it planned more hikes in an economy that was growing with “considerable momentum”.

The bank’s governor Graeme Wheeler said rates no longer needed to be kept at a record low and could return to “normal” levels, sending the New Zealand dollar to a five-month high against the greenback.

“The bank’s assessment is that the Official Cash Rate will need to rise by about two percentage points over the next two years for inflation to settle,” he said.

NEW DELHI - Four men convicted of raping and murdering a woman in New Delhi had their death sentences upheld on Thursday for a crime that caused a huge public backlash against an entrenched culture of violence against women in India. Court upholds Delhi rapists’ death sentences

sessing 10 kg of marijuana, Abdi Gultom, 28, had to bear all his actions. The man staying at Jalan Rangsana 17 Pesanggaran, South Denpasar, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, Tuesday (Mar 11).

In the trial at the Denpasar District Court, the sentenced imposed by the judge was considered fairly light in terms of evidence presented at trial. In the ruling, the panel of judges chaired by Wanugraha stated the defendant was found guilty and convinced as well as unlawful because he planted, cultivated, owned or provided narcot-ics belonging to first category in the form of plant. For the offense, the defendant was charged under Article 111 paragraph (2) of the Law of the RI No.35/2009 on narcotics. Other than physical punishment for 12 years, the judge also sentenced the defendant to pay a fine of IDR 8 billion. And if it was not paid, it could be substituted with four-month subsidiary impris-onment.

The verdict was lower than the prosecution. Earlier, the public pros-ecutor Ni Wayan Yusmawati charged the defendant more than 12 years. Against the verdict, both defendant and prosecutor stated to accept.

Previously, in the fact of the trial was revealed that defendant was arrested on November 5, 2013 on Jalan Ma-taram Gang Suli 2 Kuta. The arrest began from a report if the defendant often trafficked drugs.

Armed with that information, police immediately conducted an investigation. At that time, the officers continued to monitor the movement of the defendant. Once the target was believed to be in front of the eyes, police immediately arrested him.

Responding to such conditions, the academician Ida Bagus Putu Astina said on Wednesday (Mar 12) the fate of farmers should be rescued and their welfare had to be improved. “Suppose the leaders make innovation, the activity of farmers will not vacant. For example, farmers must be nurtured or trained to grow other commodities such as corn and others. Although they cannot harvest rice, there are still other commodi-ties to be produced,” he said.

On that account, he hoped the leaders of Bali had the spirit of entrepreneurship. If they had, various innovations could be done to save the farmers. The leader as an

According to them, the results of feasibility study determined one of the airport construction site (Kubutambahan —Ed), but in the level of Bali Prov-ince his party was still waiting for a small team related to the airport construction plan in North Bali es-tablished by the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika.

“It has not resulted in a decision. Even, when we attended a meeting with the Bali Province, they (team of the province—Ed) may also have a feasibility study in other region outside Kubutambahan, such as in West Buleleng,” he said.

According to Suyasa, Buleleng County was still awaiting the re-sults of the most possible feasibility study which would be made into a recommendation by the small team of the province related to the airport construction plan in North Bali to be submitted to the regional leader. “Up to this moment, there has been no certainty about the airport construc-tion plan in Kubutambahan. What presented by PT PBM was just the

results of the study on spatial order, geology up to the total plan of the airport construction,” he said.

He added the airport construc-tion itself required the land area of 500 hectares. However, private sector was impossible to build an airport only, there should be sup-porting commercial facilities with the area up to 1,000 hectares. “Sup-porting commercial facilities can include warehouse, logistics and other airport supporting facilities,” he added. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Observation in the field on Wednesday (Mar 12) indicated the atmosphere in Singaraja town was deserted. Leading road sections were only preoc-cupied by vehicles of residents that would like to worship. In addition, the activities in traditional markets, shops and government office were closed for the whole day.

the rubbish at a number of tem-porary disposals (TPS) has ac-cumulated and is not transported to final landfill. This condition is inevitable because the transport officers employed by the Bule-leng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) took day off co-inciding with the Pagerwesi Day, Wednesday (Mar 12). As a result, the volume of waste increased and even ran over to roadside.

Observation of Bali Post last Tuesday indicated that one of the disposal sites filled with rubbish occurred to Galiran hamlet, Bak-tiseraga village, Buleleng. The temporary disposal site is located

right at the cemetery of Baktiser-aga customary village and exactly at the SDN 1 Baktiseraga primary school. Half of the temporary disposal site had been filled with piles of rubbish. However, since it was not transported to landfill, residents were forced to dispose their rubbish outside the disposal site. Rubbish was piling up on sidewalk and spilling onto the road. Aside from being produced by native residents, most rubbish was also generated by migrants who lived in the residential area (BTN) of Baktiseraga village and surrounding areas.

A scavenger, Komang Mar-tiani, said the piling up rubbish happened because the garbage

trucks had not been in operation since Tuesday (Mar 11). She did not know why the trucks did not operate. Usually, the garbage truck arrived at the temporary disposal site at 07:00 a.m. where she was looking for used goods.

As a result, the rubbish con-tinued to increase and perished. Residents who disposed rubbish put the bags on sidewalk and on the street. Even, the volume of rubbish would continue to grow especially on Pagerwesi compared to usual days. “I am looking for junks every day and the truck hauling rubbish has not come within the past two days. By and large, the truck has arrived at 07:00 a.m. and the rubbish does

not spill onto the roadside like this,” she said.

Other than at Baktiseraga vil-lage, the rubbish piled up on the roadside because it had not been transported to landfill as found on Jalan Singaraja-Seririt, precisely at Tukadmungga village, Buleleng. There was not disposal site at this location, but people persisted on disposing rubbish at roadside so it covered up the drain in the south of the road.

The rubbish having piled up from a few days was then burned. People only burned the dry rub-bish. Meanwhile, the wet rubbish was beginning to perish and spread unpleasant scent. “We do not know why the garbage truck does not

transport the rubbish whereas it passes through this area every day. Probably, since there is no disposal site or something else, the rubbish is disposed into the gutter. Since today is holiday the volume of rub-bish increases and the drain cannot hold it,” said a resident.

As observation, the parking lot of the garbage truck owned by the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscaping Agency at Banyun-ing, Singaraja, seemed closed. A number of yellow trucks were parked neatly. Then, the employ-ees were given day-off because it coincided with the Pagerwesi Day. The garbage truck would be back into operation on Thursday morning (Mar 13). (mud)

ebrated with special ritual like Galungan and Kuningan. Uniquely, on this celebration the townspeople worship at graveyard. This tradition is still preserved so far and not only on Pagerwesi, but also on Galungan and Kuningan where Buleleng residents also put offerings in the form of food oblation (punjung) for their ancestors who have not been cremated yet.

Before starting the prayers, residents cleaned up first the grave of their family. After that, people put their food of-ferings having been prepared over the grave. There were no priests or higher priests who led the prayers at the graveyard on Pagerwesi, but residents held their worship without the chanting of mantras. Residents conveyed their prayers to the ancestors to invoke bless-ings and well-being on the Pagerwesi. “This tradition has passed through generations and the worship is usually made by family whose members have not been cremated yet. Thus, today they are brought offer-ings to the graveyard,” said of one the residents, Rudi.

After the prayers, people did not directly leave the graveyard, but took a rest at graveyard area. Each people’s group then held a

small party around their family grave. The food offerings having been delivered was then imme-diately eaten out. They were also

mutually exchanging their food, so the familial atmosphere and brotherhood among them was well established. (mud)

Two of rap’s top stars combined for a powerful, hit-filled two-hour show Wednesday night and Thursday morning during South By Southwest, allowing Samsung to steal some of iTunes’ lus-ter at the annual music conference and festival.

Samsung announced the Austin Music Hall show early this week and scheduled the pair at the same time as the iTunes Festival’s hip-hop night that featured Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q at the very nearby ACL Moody Theater. The performance came a few weeks after West called out Apple CEO Tim Cook at a New Jersey concert, telling him to “stop trying to get performers to play your festival for free, you are rich as (expletive).”

Chances are West and Jay Z didn’t play the show for free, but the return on investment wasn’t marginal. The show was one of the most anticipated surround-ing the annual buzz-building gathering and fans with Samsung devices with the company’s new streaming music service, Milk Music, were granted free entry.

In details, they consisted of 67,278 sheets of IDR 100,000 denomina-tion, 56,764 sheets of IDR 50,000 denomination, 5,033 sheets of IDR 20,000 denomination, 3,553 sheets of IDR 10,000 denomination, 2,460 sheets of IDR 5,000 denomination, 19 sheets of IDR 2,000 denomination and 3 sheets of IDR 1,000 denomination. They were the findings of fake rupiah banknotes collected from 2008 through 2013 and stored in the National Police Criminal Investigation.

Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded that during 2013 the most

fake banknotes were in circulation in the region of East Java. A total of 22.85 percent of fake banknotes was found in the region. Then, it was followed by the Greater Jakarta (20.71 percent), West Java (15.23 percent), Central Java (13.19 percent) and Jogjakarta (12.30 percent). Findings of the fake banknotes throughout the year 2013 were based on 58 reports from the public.

Government through the Bank Indonesia (BI) and the National Police Criminal Investigation continued to urge the public to be vigilant against the circulation of fake banknotes. Similarly, it also asked the public who found the counterfeit money to immediately report to police or BI in order it could be investigated in relation to the loca-tion for preventing further victims. However, the loss of the fake banknote owners or the people reporting the fake banknotes would not be replaced by the BI. This condi-tion made it difficult to diminish the circulation of fake banknotes in Indonesia. (059)
