With something for everyone, any age can enjoy a dizzying array of arts, music and performance, which will enliven the town - bringing the local economy and the artistic community together. So as the nights draw in come along and join in the vibrant celebration of the arts and culture, people and places, that make Bournemouth truly unique.

The Arts University Bournemouth is very pleased to support the festival in its fourth year. INTRODUCTIONThis year, the fourth Arts by the Sea Festival, brings seventeen days of inspiring performances to Bournemouth with international premieres, new commissions, first time performers plus the return of some of our favourites.

The festival opens with our award winning Opening Weekend, voted last year as the ‘Best Evening Experience of the Year’ at the Bournemouth Tourism Awards. We are pleased to welcome back French artists, Compagnie Carabosse, who return after seven years with their extraordinary Fire Gardens, transforming Bournemouth Gardens into a magical fiery landscape. And for those who were fortunate enough to experience The Electric Hotel from Fuel Theatre Company at the 2011 festival, this year we bring their spectacular new commission, The Roof, to The Waterfront space at Pier Approach. Combining fast paced free running, 3D sound and a spectacular outdoor arena specially designed by Jon Bausor, set designer for the Paralympic opening ceremony, the event is set to bring an energetic and edgy opener to the festival.

With our festival theme of ‘On the Edge’ the programme continues to show how vital the arts are to our society, exploring the world in which we live and allowing us to engage with the community that surrounds us. Bringing emotion, excitement, mystery and magic, the festival offers a great opportunity to experience a wealth of unique artistic talent and outstanding performances, right here on our doorstep.

A 360 degree panoramic performance under the night sky.

A door opens and an immaculate figure steps out onto a roof. Knives are sharpened and the game begins...

Set within the suspended reality of a brutal and unforgiving game, this breathless mix of intimate 3D sound and the hair-trigger movement of free running will transport you into the body of a reluctant hero, desperate to stay alive.

Conceived, directed and choreographed by David Rosenberg and Frauke Requardt, this is their third collaboration following Electric Hotel and Motor Show.

The Roof is a truly unique experience taking place in a purpose built arena designed by Jon Bausor, set designer for the Paralympic opening ceremony. Sound and music Dave Price.

The audience will be standing outside and wearing headphones throughout.

Welcoming back one of France’s most spectacular performance companies, fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse return after seven years to transform the Lower Gardens into a magical fiery landscape for the opening weekend of the festival.

Carabosse are a collective of artists, designers, scenographers, constructors, actors, musicians, technicians, inventors, poets, photographers and visual artists. They have been creating work for over 15 years, taking over public spaces both in Europe and across the world.

After the amazing success of our commissioned beach hut last year, Spiegelei-on-Sea from artist Jem Finer, which now nestles permanently on The Seafront by the West Cliff Lift, this year Arts University Bournemouth bring ‘Oyster Pleasance’ an extraordinary retake on the traditional beach hut.

As part of the exhibition, Bathing Beauties, (see page 26) at TheGallery, AUB, the beach hut was designed by a collaboration between architect Will Alsop and A-Models.

Choral premiere featuring Robert Mitchell’s Panacea, Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, Avonbourne College and Harewood College.

Invocation is a stunningly unique performance, which blends the traditions of jazz, choral, classical and improvised music, creating what Mitchell describes as “transcendental sound” achieved by the combined voices of over 100 choral performers. Bringing together Grammy winning Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, young music students from Avonbourne and Harewood Colleges and Mitchell’s jazz quartet, Panacea. Mitchell’s new composition is based upon the ever vital and under-celebrated role inspirational teaching plays on human development. This premiere is sure to be a formidable, potent and unmissable experience.

During the First World War the magnificent Mont Dore Hotel, now Bournemouth’s Town Hall, was used as a hospital to treat wounded soldiers. Using historical records, two WW1 nurses take the audience back to share a moment in history. Who are their patients and where will they find them?

This is a guided walk in the Town Hall lasting approximately one hour.

A satirical, wild and irreverent story of rebellion, Vĕra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is perhaps also the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s. A riotous, punk-rock poem of a film that is both hilarious and mind-warpingly innovative, Daisies continues to provoke, stimulate and entertain.

Once in a Blue Moon

Pavilion Dance and BSO new music ensemble, Kokoro, join forces to perform Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s iconic music theatre-work, Vesalii Icones. Experimental and expressionistic, Vesalii Icones fuses dance and music by taking the fourteen Stations of the Cross and superimposing them on 16th Century anatomical drawings by the father of anatomy Andreas Vesalius. Controversial when premiered over forty years ago, the work retains all its power to disturb and challenge.

Tony Adigun, Artistic Director of Avant Garde Dance, has choreographed this new commission with the solo cello performed by distinguished cellist Vittorio Ceccanti. In the second half, Kokoro play works by Davies, including specially commissioned dance pieces performed by hip-hop dancers from Bournemouth.

Internationally renowned writer and performer Caroline Bergvall teams up with experimental Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach and Swiss visual artist Thomas Köppel and together they invent a language of extremes: from the ancient pool of English and Nordic poetry to the lyrics of pop songs and human rights reports into contemporary sea migrants’ disasters.

Established in 2012, Fieri Consort are recognised internationally for their delicate, intricate and stunning sound. This performance features sacred works by French composers Poulenc, Milhaud, Messiaen and Durufle. In the first half of the 20th Century composers were on the edge of a shift in artistic direction following the many social and political changes taking place. Although not completely departing from traditional church music, these evocative works explore the compositional shifts happening at the time.

This Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra concert opens their 2014/15 Season at Bournemouth Pavilion with BBC Young Musician of the Year, Martin James Bartlett, performing Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Principal Conductor, Kirill Karabits, directing the Orchestra in Brahms’ First Symphony, a performance much praised by critics in last season’s Brahms Symphony Cycle. The concert opens with Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro.

Ukranian born Kirill Karabits is one of the youngest and most dynamic conductors in the world today. His was an unlikely journey into conducting. As a teenager in 1980s Kiev, he listened obsessively to Abba songs – “a thousand times over on an old tape”. Now as the Principal Conductor of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and recipient of conductor award at the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, his music tastes may have changed but his passion for all forms of musical expression continues.

You are invited to a lecture. You know the subject is probably important and it would be useful to hear what the speaker has to say but you can’t keep your eyes open.

You will fall asleep and you will dream.

But you won’t be alone in your dream; everyone else will be there with you. And you will have a chaperone who knows the landscape and will attend to you. So nothing can go wrong...

Fiction is the second performance by Glen Neath and David Rosenberg using binaural sound and absolute darkness. It is a nerve-wracking journey through the sprawling architecture of our dreams and an exercise in empathy. Or it is an opportunity to get a 60 minute nap?

Fiction is not suitable for insomniacs.

After their exuberant performance at last year’s festival, The Dodge Brothers are back with their rootin’ tootin’ skiffle band, featuring bass-slappin’ film critic Mark Kermode and joined by silent movie piano expert, Neil Brand. The band accompany the classic 1929 Soviet prison escape film The Ghost That Never Returns, complete with trains, gunplay, romance and revolution and music inspired by union protest songs and work from Woody Guthrie.

Following the film, the band continue to play their own foot tappin’ hybrid of country blues, rockability, jugband and skiffle.

These guys play with dust in their Levis and the road in their hearts.

A number of notable composers served their countries during World War One. Remarkably, some even managed to continue to write new music during this time. The music expressed a complex but deeply affecting range of emotions embracing heroism, courage, patriotism, grief, horror and personal tragedy.

The concert includes Butterworth’s haunting setting of A Shropshire Lad; Williams’ poignant On Wenlock Edge; plus excerpts from Gurney, Hindemith, Ravel and Kreisler.

Performed by Jack Maguire Ensemble with Hugh Hetherington, Decani Tenor at Salisbury Cathedral, and Sam Hanson, piano.

Includes commissioned poetry from Bournemouth’s Poet Laureate, James Manlow.

A free lunchtime talk at 12.30pm (Mon 6 Oct) at St Peter’s Church by printmaker Dr Denis May accompanies this event. Dr May’s exhibition Wilfred Owen - The Old Lie will be on display in the church during the festival.

The premiere of a compelling and emotional World War One courtroom drama, performed in Bournemouth Council Chambers, telling the story of two young men from the Dorsetshire Regiment, on trial for cowardice. The outcome of a guilty verdict? Execution by firing squad.

Based on fact and drawn from actual WW1 first-hand eyewitness letters, diaries and accounts, the story reveals how these two heroes were suffering from what we now know as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, yet were condemned to death for their perceived disloyalty.

The courtroom hearings will powerfully evoke the military court martial for which no juries were required.

Twenty years on - in a brand new show, award winning comedian and storyteller Rosie Wilby traces her former colleagues from a feminist newspaper. Using live interactive storytelling interspersed with video interviews, music and photo archive, Rosie traces a journey through early 90s feminism, refracted through a very personal lens.

Rosie has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends, Summer Nights, Midweek and Woman’s Hour, LBC and BBC London and at festivals including Glastonbury, Green Man, Larmer Tree and Latitude.

Philip Hoare, award-winning author of Leviathan, The Whale and The Sea Inside, sets out to rediscover the sea and its animals. From Southampton to the Azores, Sri Lanka, Tasmania and New Zealand, he travels in search of birds, whales, and the way we humans have interacted with them. Accompanying Philip for this talk is artist Angela Cockayne.

Cockayne uses found objects to create provocative assemblies of discarded bottles and gannets’ wings, human hair and antique rifles and lobster-clawed women. Beautiful and disturbing, they concern the natural world and the human predicament. Her work will be on display at BNSS during the Open Weekend.

Described as a ‘time capsule’, the Festival’s favourite venue, Bournemouth Natural Science Society (BNSS), opens its doors to reveal one of the region’s most fascinating and unique collections. BNSS Open Weekend gives access to all areas to see botanical specimens, geology, birds, butterflies and even an Egyptian mummy.

Free drop in workshops for children aged 5 - 12 will be run on both days led by artist Pauline Stanley.

Enter Vag Halen, one of Toronto’s most exciting and confrontational rock bands. For some the zone between the New Forest and the Purbecks has acted as a locus to the other side - from the birthplace of Gerald Gardiner, and modern witchcraft, to the end place of Paul Nash - esoteric artists and occult thinkers are an intrinsic part of Bournemouth’s history.

In honour of this, Absolute Elsewhere brings a night of multi sensory experience spread over the interior, bringing together artists, performers, filmmakers and musicians for a night that promises to electrify and enchant the soul. Including specially curated rooms, installations and a rolling stage programme.

Contributors include English Heretic, The Cult of Ramelzee, Mark Pilkington, Heather Leigh, Jenny Savage and Graham Gussin, Matt Shaw, Tim Russell, Gorilla Perfumes and Seer Dirge.

What fate became the fifty brides of Bournemouth, last seen disappearing over the horizon at 2013’s festival? The story continues with Resurrection of the Sea Brides, a gothic spectacular in the historic Shelley Theatre and grounds. Artist Zerelda Sinclair, once described as the ‘wicked stepmother of Bournemouth’, presents a new promenade performance inspired by the ancient Venetian ‘Marriage of the Sea’ ritual. Featuring haunting choral soundscapes by Ali Sharpe and Language, Timothy!, associate artists Kate O’Malley and Denise Poote, and fifty local women young and old. Not for the faint hearted.

For the full Gothic experience, a screening of Ken Russell’s post-psychedelic horror film The Lair of the White Worm (1988, cert. 18), featuring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi, will follow the performance.

Bombay Talkies and Asian Arts Agency presents Devi: classic Indian cinema with live score, celebrating 101 years of Indian Cinema.

Talvin Singh, one of the most influential figures in British Asian music, celebrates 101 years of Indian cinema with this blend of film and live music. The Mercury Prize-winner and master of the tabla has assembled a cross-cultural line-up of superb musicians to improvise a new score to the iconic Indian arthouse classic Devi (1960).Exploring and extending key elements of the film’s original soundtrack, the musicians riff and reinvent the score in a potent blend of classical Indian and contemporary music. Devi (Goddess) is a seminal work by Satyajit Ray who has achieved iconic status in India and is acknowledged as one of the most significant film-makers of the 20th century.

Talvin and Roopa also perform a classical set as a special feature to engage the audience with the synergy of their instruments and traditional repertoire. The evening is rounded off with a finale performed to selected still images from this epic masterpiece of a film.

Ferry and Brownsea Island ConcertFeaturing Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet

Giving the Festival its final send off, sell out performers at both the 2012 and 2013 festivals, British Sea Power takes the audience on a sea-faring journey to Brownsea Island, home of the red squirrel and Baden-Powell’s scout camp. Joined by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Brass Quintet, the concert includes a special extended musical ferry tour around the five islands islands in one of the world’s largest and most beautiful natural inland harbours.

Led by violinist, Ruth Rogers, former co-leader of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Iuventus Ensemble formed in 2003, has been hailed by the Irish Times as “startling” – “theirs was a purely musical approach – bracing, fearless and utterly engaging.” Having performed at venues throughout the UK and internationally as far afield as Jakarta, Indonesia and Bangkok, for this performance they are joined by clarinetist Thomas Hull, who founded the City of London Chamber Orchestra. The programme includes Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet and Clarinet Quintets by Weber and Mozart.

In association with Arts University Bournemouth, the festival exhibition at TheGallery, Bathing Beauties is a selection of miniature beach huts reimagined by 240 national and international architects, artists and designers. The exhibition evolved from a project/competition led by artist Michael Trainor, and presents over 100 selected models and one full-scale beach hut, ‘Oyster Pleasance’. Traditional seaside references are gone and replaced by structures that incorporate wind turbines, saunas, camera obscura, viewing platforms and space-age materials.

Oyster Pleasance will be installed outside Aruba, Pier Approach, for the Opening Weekend of the festival, Sat 27 and Sun 28 September including a live performance.

A National Centre for Craft and Design touring exhibition

French artist, Damien Marchal, has been commissioned to produce a new permanent sculpture in Bournemouth as part of Arts University Bournemouth’s Interregional Culture-led Regeneration project, (see also Our Common Ground exhibition). Featuring a circle of trees enclosing a beautifully designed bench, each tree has a phone number carved into the trunk, which links to a recorded message.
