INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS TO THE 2006 AFRICAN JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

1. Venue and Dates

The 2006 African Junior Chess Championships will be held from 15th December 2005 (arrival) to 30th December 2006(departure) at Yarona Country Lodge GABORONE, Botswana.

The Yarona Country Lodge is located 5 kms from City Centre.

Arrival and registration will take place on 15th December 2006

2. Participants

Eligible participants are those players born on or after 1 January 1986. This is in accordance with FIDE Rules and Regulations

The tournament will be played in TWO sections, an open event and a girl’s event. The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) will cater for TWO players (one boy and one girl) from each FIDE affiliated African Chess Federation on a full board and lodging basis. Additional players may be accepted on application. Additional players, course participants, officials, coaches, friends and or relatives through their Federations, will be required to pay US$45.00 per person per day for full board at Yarona Country Lodge.

Workshop participants will be country delegates who will pay the US$100.00 as registration fee for the workshop for them to be eligible to attend. The workshop will be only 7 days, 6 hours per day.

3. FIDE Fees

FIDE Regulations requires that an entry fee of SFr 100 (One Hundred Swiss Francs) is paid for each invited player (one boy and one girl). Additional players are required to pay an entry fee of SFr 200 (Two Hundred Swiss Francs)

Federations are responsible for paying the entry fees for each of their players. All fees should be paid into the account of FIDE by 10 December 2006. BCF will

require proof of payment to FIDE and therefore the player (s) must bring along the necessary copy.

4. Registration

The closing date for entries is 12 December 2006. Registration Forms (attached below), duly completed, must be sent by either fax or e-mail to confirm entry. A Registration Fee of US$100.00 per player will be payable on arrival to the BCF. Failure to pay this fee will result in the affected player(s) being excluded from the tournament.

5. Board and Lodging

Participants will be accommodated at the Yarona Country Lodge. They will also have their breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Yarona Country Lodge.

Accompanying persons requiring assistance with sourcing of accommodation should advise the BCF at the latest by 5th December 2006. Such persons should provide full description of the nature of their requirements. For guidance the following rates prevail: Yarona Country Lodge (the playing venue) rate is booked through BCF at US$45 (full board) per day while rates for lodges within a walking distance from the playing venue are on average about US$60, per day, excluding meals.

Payments for additional players should be made in cash (in U.S. Dollars) on arrival.

6. Tournament Regulations

The Championships will be played in accordance with FIDE regulations on an 11 rounds Round Robin (or 9 rounds Swiss System if there are at least 12 players) basis with free days after the Round 5 and 9. The games will be played using DGT clocks.

The time control will be 40 moves in 75 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move 1.

8. Travel Arrangements

Travelling costs to and from GABORONE, BOTSWANA is the responsibility of the participants. The hosts shall meet participants and accompanying persons at the GABORONE International Airport, GABORONE Bus Terminus, or GABORONE Railway Station provided that full information about the flight/trip and arrival times is given in writing to the organizers not later than 10th December 2006.

9. Local Currency

The local currency is the BOTSWANA PULA, which currently stands at an Exchange Rate of P6.1 per US$1. Participants are advised to change any foreign currency through the banks or foreign exchange bureaus. It is advisable to make all transactions, save for the fees mentioned above, using the local currency.

10. Visas

For delegations coming from countries requiring entry visas, these can be obtained from BOTSWANA Embassies. In the event a visa is required, the host Federation will arrange for official invitations to facilitate applications. Participants are advised to apply for visas on time and should they encounter problems they should urgently contact the BCF for assistance.

11. Chief Arbiter

The Chief Arbiter and his assistants for the 2006 African Junior Chess Championships will be communicated in due course.
