Borneo is the world’s third largest island.

Shrouded in mystery, dense rain forests cover largeareas of this remote mountainous land mass.This primary rain-forest is one of the oldest and mostdiverse on the planet. The island comprises the threecountries of Sarawak (East Malaysia), Sabah, Brunei aswell as Kalimantan (Indonesia). It is a land where forestpeople live as they have done forhundreds of years.

Borneo itself has an incredibly rich biodiversity with15,000 species of flowering plants, 3,000 species oftrees, more than 200 species of terrestrial mammals andover 400 species of birds.

Each day you will explore classic forest waterfalls, goingback to basics and getting to know the life of asemi-nomadic tribesman.You’ll explore deep into the interior of Borneo, meeting theisland’s ancient tribe, the Penan.This mysterious and elusive people are the masters ofjungle survival. They have proudly preserved their ancientbush craft skills and jungle traditions. They will share withyou their some of their life-secrets – from fishing with netsto hunting with blowpipes.The expedition will be delving into one of the most remotecorners of Borneo, into South East Sarawak. From there,you’ll make your way into the remote northern jungleinterior. This area of primary rainforest is home to theincredible and fascinating Penan. Numbering just a fewthousand, the Penan are one of the last nomadicrainforest tribes. They can only be found if you’re willing totrek into the most remote corners of the Sarawak jungle.For the next week you will enjoy the privilege of living thePenan life. Trekking through their traditional forest homewill give you the unique experience of learning how thePenan tribe flourish; how they use their unique survivaltechniques to live comfortably within the rainforestenvironment. Your diet will be supplemented with copiousquantities of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables – all locallysourced.

As each day passes, you will learn more and understand how to conduct yourselfsafely in the jungle. Each day will become an increasingly familiar pattern of waking,eating, packing and trekking. You’ll enjoy refreshing rest stops along the way bystunning rivers and waterfalls. You and your guides will be the only people forhundreds of miles around. Every night, before dusk, you will set up your wild camp in adifferent part of the forest.Your guides will cook supper on open fires before the sounds of the forest will send youto sleep.Don’t expect creature comforts. You won’t be living the life of a tourist. What you canexpect is a truly uplifting learning experience – an adventure in the heart of afast-disappearing tropical culture. Although your experience will, at times be tough,we’ll make sure that it’s both exciting and memorable. There will be new friendshipsforged and you’ll enjoy a wonderful sense of camaraderie. Our team’s number onepriority will be safety. We’ll also ensure that everyone spends the most unforgettableand enjoyable time.By sharing the lives of the Penan, you will be helping directly to support theircommunity. You will be contributing to the understanding and the preservation of anancient civilisation and the magnificent environment that sustains them.

At over 55,000 hectares in size, the Deramakot wildlifesanctuary offers the excellent opportunity for seeingwildlife up close. Alongside its networks of gravel roadslive some of the region’s highest density populations oforang-utans and pygmy elephants.

After a week studying the Penan way of life, we’ll head tonearby Sabah. Here we’ll spend three days in thelittle-known Deramakot forest reserve, viewing some ofthe world’s most spectacular wildlife in its natural habitat -Elephants, Orang-utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Gibbonsand Hornbills to name just a few. We’ll wake to the dawncalls of the Borneo gibbon. Then we’ll set out in 4x4 jeepswith professional guides on day and night time safaris.

Mengalum Island is 35 miles (56 km) North-West of KotaKinabalu. White sandy beaches and crystal blue watersurround this pristine tropical island paradise. There is anextensive coral community teeming with underwater lifewhich is perfect for snorkelling.

To reach our island by boat, we allow about 11⁄2 hoursfrom Kota Kinabalu. This picturesque island is still barelyuntouched and is a perfect way to look back and reflecton the jungle and safari phases of the expedition.

DAY 1 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYArrive Miri Sarawak. Early birds can visit Lambir Hills National Park or explore Mirri at

their own cost.

Miri is the gateway to remote parts of northern Sarawak, Borneo. It is a hive of local

activity and has some thriving fish and fresh produce markets and many of the rural

population use it as their main hub for selling their produce.

Accommodation & Food: Hotel provided

DAY 2 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYMorning twin otter flight into Sarawake jungle. Transfer to 4 x 4 jeeps. 90 minute

journey followed by a 2 hour walk to first Penan village.

Your guide will introduce you to all the key people in the Penan village; he will take

you on a short tour of the village and ensure you get to know your local staff team.

This is also a chance to acclimatise to the heat and humidity of the jungle, before you

start trekking in earnest the following day.

This evening will be your first night in this amazing environment. Arriving at a suitable

and wild campsite, near water, your guide will show you how to set your hammock,

mosquito net and shelter (known as a basha) up in the forest and how to conduct

yourself safely during the day and night.

Accommodation & Food: Overnight in Penan village. Sleep in hammocks

DAY 3 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYTrek 4-5 hours to jungle camp one.

Trekking through dense and stunning sections of rainforest, keep your eyes peeled

for the amazing wealth of flora and fauna that surrounds you. You and your guides will

follow century old hunting trails as well as carving out your own trails in the dense

jungle.

Accommodation & Food: Make camp food cooked over fire. Sleep in hammocks

DAY 4 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYDay trek to lost caves. Travelling light, learning about the Penan way of life and use of

the jungle on route.

Along the way local Penan guides will show you all that they know about how to

survive in the rainforest. What plants to eat, what plants to avoid, how to build traps

and shelters if you were hunting and of course how to find dry wood and light a great

fire for morale and for cooking on.

DAY 5 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYTrek 4-5 hours to jungle camp two.

You will start to learn how to spot animal tracks and bird calls, and as a result there is

no doubt that you will start to become at one with the forest as you trek through an

incredibly remote area..

Accommodation & Food: Make camp Sleeping in jungle camp two. Food cooked over

fire, sleep in hammocks

DAY 6 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYTrek back to first Penan village.

In the Penan village there will be time to meet the traditional elders who will be more

than happy to discuss their lives. The elders were all born in the forest when their

families were still nomadic hunter gatherers, so will provide a truly unique insight into

their history and way of life.

Accommodation & Food: Overnight in first Penan village. Sleep in hammocks

DAY 7 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYHead back to second Penan village.

Arriving at the second Penan village you will be able to make comparisons to the first

village and see how in tune the locals are to the environment.

Accommodation & Food: Overnight in Penan two village. Sleep in hammocks

DAY 8 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYDay trek to giant waterfalls, lunch then back to Penan village.

You will be able to spend some time exploring classic forest waterfalls and really go

back- to-basics and understand what life is like as a semi-nomadic tribesman.

Accommodation & Food: Overnight in second Pennan village. Sleep in hammocks

DAY 9 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYLong tail boat journey then 4 x 4 jeep to airstrip fly back to Miri and onto

Kota Kinabalu overnight.

After a week in the jungle you will have a better understanding of the Penan way of

life and how the Penan the jungle to their advantage.

Accommodation & Food: Internal flights covered. Hotel in Kota Kinabalu provided

DAY 10 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYTravel to Deramakot forest reserve.

Here your guide will show you to your room(still in the heart of the Borneo jungle) for

a welcome hot shower and comfortable bed for the night.

Accommodation & Food: Sleeping in jungle lodge

DAY 11 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYDeramakot forest reserve - day walk followed by 4x4 night safari with guides.

This is a real wildlife hotspot; hopefully you will see a number of rare and exotic

creatures including,elephants, orang-utans ,macaque monkeys, hornbills and dozens

of other native birds. Make sure you have your camera.

Accommodation & Food: Sleeping in jungle lodge

DAY 12 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYHead back to Kota Kinabalu followed by boat out to Mengalum Island.

After short boat ride out to the island and checking into your room its time to relax on

the beach and have a swim in the sea.

Accommodation & Food: Overnight on island

DAY 13 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYBeach - Mengalum island snorkel day. Returning back to Kota Kinabalu at the end of

the day.

After snorkelling around the island and checking out the pristine coral you will be

heading back to the main land in which you will have your final meal with the group.

Accommodation & Food: Kota Kinabalu Hotel. Final meal with group

DAY 14 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYDepart Kota Kinabalu, International flight back home.

DAY 15 - LOCATION AND ACTIVITYArrive back home.

Before the expeditionThere will be a pre-expedition briefing day, during which John Sullivan, Elite SurvivalTraining expedition leader will give full details of the trip. There will be particularemphasis on safety during all aspects of the trip. Our aim is to allow everyone thespace to challenge themselves whilst enjoying a personal learning journey. All safetyback-up plans, risk assessments and in-country support will be explained in detail.Elite Survival Training has been responsible for a number of high profile expeditionsfor Television Companies including the BBC and National Geographic Channel.Recommendation from these companies emphasised the safety and emergencyplanning aspects covered by Elite Survival Training.

SafetyElite Survival Training will ensure that complete and indepth safety arrangement have been made. Staff willhave GPS and Satellite phones on hand at all times incase of emergency, along with comprehensive medicalequipment.

The Expedition is open to all abilities. Some activities will be easy to handle. Others willbe more of a challenge. By the end of the trip, you’ll enjoy a feeling like no other - thesense of achievement, personal gain and adrenaline will be second to none.

The Borneo Expedition is also incredibly diverse. Somedays you will feel the intense pangs of adrenaline runthrough your veins as you experience an activity for thevery first time. Other days the sense of achievement willbe almost overwhelming as you complete an activity asa team: you simply won’t be able to stop smiling!This expedition is an amazing opportunity. The greatthing is that it is open to ANYONE. All that’s required isthat you have a reasonable level of fitness (i.e. regularlywalk in the hills), enjoy adventurous and sportingactivities and are up for a personal challenge.

Safety and sound leadership with activities run andmanaged by professionals are paramount. They are thekey to every Elite Survival Expedition. Each activity willbe run by fully certified local specialist operators. Ourleaders are experts in their field and have beenhandpicked by Elite Survival’s technical team. All theguides and drivers have intimate knowledge of theregion.

There will be a back-up team of Elite Leaders, guidesand cooks behind the scenes. They’ll meet you at theend of every day, help set up your camp, provideexpertise and above all cook a hearty meal!

The Elite Survival team will not force anyone to doevery activity. Although unusual, there may be timeswhen, on grounds of safety, we have to skip an activity.
