892 BOOK REVIEWS Mayo Clin Proc, July 1989, Vol 64 the chapters on cervical esophageal and pharyngeal defects primarily discuss reconstruction with local neck flaps and esophageal tubes. This method is now mainly of historical interest. New recommendations for treatment of stage 3 laryngeal cancer with radical operations, irradiation, and chemotherapy include no supporting data. The important information in this book has proved timeless and valuable, but new material will have to be found elsewhere. The overall organization, the illustrations, and most of the content will still be useful to residents in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery. The real "pearls" in this book were also presented in the 1973 edition, but it is a tribute to Dr. Montgomery that they remain "pearls" today. Kerry D.
