Mayo Clin Proc, October 1999, Vol 74 Book Reviews 1056 Contents: The book contains 14 chapters that cover most aspects of medical genetics. The first 2 chapters briefly summarize cell biology, protein and gene structure, and commonly used cytoge- netic, molecular, and other diagnostic methods. The next chapter is devoted to chromosomal structure and pathology, with empha- sis on the most common clinically relevant chromosomal disor- ders. Chapter 4 reviews currently accepted concepts of tumor biology and genetic changes in the development of cancer. Men- delian and mitochondrial inheritance patterns and congenital mal- formations, each supported with common clinical examples, are covered in the next 6 chapters. The author devoted chapters 10 and 11 to the essentials of pharmacogenetics and immunogenet- ics, presenting comprehensive and updated information from these areas. Chapters 12, 13, and 14 discuss the genetics of common disorders, the current role of genetics in medicine, im- portant considerations and implications of genetic testing, popula- tion screening, and current treatment of genetic disorders. The book offers a clear perspective of genetics as a growing field that influences every area of contemporary medicine and a sense of the enormous potential for the development of new therapeutic options based on an increased understanding of the basic genetic sciences. The text is enriched with beautiful illustrations (includ- ing clear graphics and photographs), includes a useful list of Internet sites, and provides an abundance of case studies and clinical examples to enforce key points. The accompanying CD- ROM contains a chapter-by-chapter review of Internet links and more than 100 self-assessment questions and answers. Strengths: This terse, well-written text emphasizes the growing involvement of genetics in a broad range of medical specialties and its role in linking basic science discoveries with direct patient care. Deficiencies: Intended as a basic overview of a broad medical field, this book does not cover all aspects of clinical genetics; for complete information on specific topics, readers should consult the provided references. Recommended Readership: This text is a valuable resource on basic genetic principles for students and general practitioners.
