A dot means full stop. And full stop doesn't mean an end, always.

It is to begin a new sentence, a new paragraph, a new chapter or a

new story of a book. Your life is a book.

Let's make a dot for a new beginning!

There is no one who has not come across a suicide news. Suicide by celebrities, techies, business tycoons, students or by any other common person. As per the WHO data, more than 800 000 people die by suicide every year across the globe. Every 40 seconds a life is lost through suicide.

In India, in every 3 seconds, a person attempts to die and is the leading cause of death in the age-group between 15-29-years. 37.8% in India are by those below the age of 30 years and 71% of suicides are by persons below the age of 44 years.

Based on this parameter, the worst countries were North and South Korea, Guyana, Lithuania and Sri Lanka. While the world average number of suicides due to all causes is 11.6 per 100, 000 India's annual suicide rate is 10.5 per 100,000. It occupies the 12th position in the world. Internationally, suicide accounts for 50% of all violent deaths in men and 71% in women. In India, the male-to-female ratio is 1.6.

Until October 2013, these were nothing more than news for me. Like everyone, I too had never imagined that such things could ever happen in my life or with my loved ones. Then, one incident changed my life. When I was away from home, one horrid morning I got news that my mom had commit suicide. Within a fraction of second, I was shattered entirely and felt that nothing left in my life.

I started surfing online more about the suicide cases and the suicidal behaviour. While my research I came to know about IASP (International Association for Suicide Prevention) and found that there are so many NGOs working for this cause all over the world. I visited few of the NGOs in India to understand how they work.

A person going through such phase does not know what to do or whom to approach with his or problems; as he does not want to trouble his friends or family. We never realise that someone close to us might be suffering from suicidal thoughts. I realised that in India, very less number of people are aware of such NGO and suicide prevention helpline.

Then I decided to create something fascinating to spread the message that how one can win the battle of darkness inside himself. Then I wrote Amayra: The essence of life, with one goal in mind: to publish a photo-story book to create the awareness about suicide prevention and the NGO helpline.

The mission of creating Amayra:1. To create awareness about suicide prevention.2. To impart the message that suicide can't be a solution to any problem and help people in thinking for a better way out.3. To create awareness about NGO's working for suicide prevention across the world.

Enjoy reading this book and pass around the message of the book to the macrocosm.

Prologue from authorWords fall short to express my gratitude towards all those who contributed directly and indirectly. When I finished writing the first draft of the book, I needed feedback. Thank you Kumar Akash, Prithika Thaman and CSP for being my first readers and motivating me at each phase.

At the outset one has to appreciate the attitude and determination of Swati Kumari who has written this photo story book following her mother's suicide and in the midst of bereavement. In Indian culture, usually people avoid sharing or discussing the suicide of family members due to stigma, but Swati is brave enough to contribute for the purpose of suicide prevention.

Swati has done a great job in bringing out the book “AMAYRA :The essence of life” to create awareness of those working in suicide prevention across the world, spreading the message that suicide is not a solution to any problem. Few Indians know that there are Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working in the area of suicide prevention who can provide invaluable help to them when they are in despair.

Swati with the character of Amayra in this book clearly depicts the current state of mind of many people, particularly young Indians, striving for success, jobs, money, love and power with almost insatiable desires. For some this drive can cause us to slowly move from a world of happiness into a mist of desperation and even depression or suicidal behaviour.

The slow descent of Amayra into depression is clearly portrayed by the author in both words and photographs. When Amayra was harboring ideas of suicide, Swati introduces us to a character named Inayat who counsels her and brings out her from crisis using wonderful phrases like “If you could dare to give up the life, better give up the cause of the problem”, “Fall in love again with your life”, “Life is beautiful, give life a chance”, “Don't give up without a Good-bye”. Inayat is a role model for not only all NGOs, counsellors and those working in health services, but also for every one of us. We all have a role to play in suicide prevention.

Swati Kumari has portrayed an important message in a simple, visual and verbal way, understandable to all. This year's World Suicide Prevention Day theme “Connect, Communicate and Care” is sincerely and effectively honoured by the author. This book has a place in all of our homes and needs to be complimented by more and more efforts towards suicide prevention in India.

Our sincere congratulations to Swati Kumari for her admirable determination and achievement in creating this wonderful resource. Swati Kumari is an inspiration to all of us working in suicide prevention and beyond.

Foreword Foreword

Prof. Ella Arensman

´His name was Thomas. Young clever creative, he was a community manager. I still remember the first day I met him. Long hair, smiling face, he was talking about his job with passion and enthusiasm. I knew my MBA students would love him and I asked him to come and teach them e-communication. His lessons were AMAZING and my students were so happy to have a professor like him , so dedicated and friendly. The last time I saw him, he told me that he had some problem with his job. Then we discussed the batch he will have to teach this year and nothing more. A few weeks later, I learnt that he committed suicide... I was completely disoriented and two questions were always in my mind: Why? And What could I have done to avoid this tragedy...Time is running . His smile is still in my mind and I still don't have answers to those two questions.'

I met Swati Kumari in France. She was my student in ESC- Pau. A brilliant, sensitive and so cheery girl. I really appreciate her and we are in contact even after she completed her MBA. I did not know much about her life, but I knew that she wanted to write a book and I was extremely happy when her novel "Without A Goodbye" was published. I love to see people making their dreams come true. But this novel is more than a novel.

Now Swati is presenting another great project, a book for creating awareness about suicide prevention. Suicide is a tragedy which impacts so many people. With her talent, her sensibility, her work I know she will do it and I want to support her initiative. She is doing a remarkable job.

Swati must go ahead with her project. We also need to go ahead with her and support her keeping in mind all the people we know and who have chosen the dark side of the Life. We Have to support Her for all the people who are thinking about suicide and who don't find solutions or help.

Her book, Amayra- The essence of Life is a Light, a Chant of Hope , a Hymn to the Life. We Have to support her in her mission to prevent suicides. Merci and good luck dear Swati and Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do something in the memory of Thomas.

Warm regards

ForewordI met Swati a year ago when she was in Bangalore and wanted to be a volunteer with our NGO - SAHAI Suicide Prevention Helpline. She introduced me to her book, “WITHOUT A GOODBYE”.

The next few hours were a learning experience for me as she shared the personal tragedy that Life dealt her. In spite of her loss and grief, she was positive and related to me how she wanted to reach out to others in distress. She wanted to start an online campaign against suicide and write another book to make people aware of the thought - “LIFE YOU'RE WORTH IT”.

It is indeed heartening to hear from her that her online campaign has been a resounding success.

Her new book promotes the message that no matter how depressed, dejected, worthless or hopeless one feels one should not give up. Self-harm is not the solution. There is help available in the form of helplines, where trained counselors are available to listen to you with empathy and without being judgmental. When you're feeling worthless and helpless, you need to REACH OUT for help.

Her mantra is simply this. “Life is beautiful. Celebrate Life. Love Life. Believe in yourself. Don't give up on yourself.” Let all of us be a part of this mantra.
