BONGO BOY OUT OF THE GARAGE VOL 3
Bongo Boy Records
Review by Dawn Belotti | Bongo Boy Magazine
Bongo Boy’s Garage Rock album is a cross between the 1960’s and 1990’s which happen to be
my two favorite eras of music. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to these artists.
The songwriters tell stories accompanied by a fine tuned musical background.
Doug MacDonald- JACK JOKE SHOP
The Doug McDonald band hails from Boston
and makes their debut with Bongo Boy. This
tune is a punk version of Elvis Presley with
opening riffs straight out of “Jailhouse Rock.”
Their music is catchy and the song, although
having comic overtones, also brings back
memories for those who remember joke shops
and how much fun they were to browse.
The Sloths- ONE WAY OUT
The Sloths are very classic Hollywood rock. Although
their career began in the 1960s they are back with a
vengeance and with a 90s grunge/pop edge. The song
details a failed marriage or relationship and the feeling
that the one way out is the only recourse. As the song
explains, that is not necessarily true.
British Invasion All-Stars- SHAPES OF THINGS
All-stars are an understatement for the amount of talent in
this band. The band consists of
members of The Yarbirds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Pretty
Things, Procol Harum, to name a few. I love the music of the
Yardbirds; a band that featured three of most reveled guitarists in
history. There is no surprise that this version is nothing short of
brilliant. Being very familiar with the original, I definitely love this one
as well.
Susan SurfTone-BOTTOM OF MY GLASS
Hailing from the Pacific Northwest (Portland Oregon) their music sounds
similar to a 90s version of Neil Young. A good songwriter creates something
relatable. How many people have drunk dialed or said something regrettable
under the influence? It is easy for the guilty party to expect everyone to
forget it but that is not always easy.
Kayla-DON’T YA WORRY ‘BOUT
ME
Canada’s own Kayla is both a
songwriter and a vocalist. With a
beautifully written song, Kayla would
be perfectly comfortable in a 1960s girl
group. The Acoustic melodic style of
this song highlights the talent of this
young lady.
Barley Station-MUST BE SOMETHING
A 90s style power pop song writing by lead vocalist Randy
Wayne. This Midwestern band bring their own approach to rock
and to Bongo Boy.

Pamela Davis-YOU MAKE ME FEEL SPECIAL
The Sunshine State delivered Pamela, who records all
of the tracks on this one. A song that resembles
something The Byrds would have written; the song is a
1960s with a 2000 decade twist. This is a good piece
by Pamela Davis.
The Forty Nineteens-
I’M FREE
I really like this Socal band.
It is apparent I am not the only
one as they have been
requested as an opener from
everyone from The Red Hot
Chili Peppers to Yo La Tengo. This underground raucous band is a good time both live and on
recording.
Mark Lindsay-NEW THING
Mark is a darker version of Lou Reed. A 1960s buff’s like myself know him as the former
vocalist of Paul Revere and The Raiders. A bit of trivia, that band guested on an episode of
Batman. How cool is that? It is awesome to hear Mark’s new stuff.
Nick Marr- TELL ME WHY
Nick Marr could have been a member of The Cult during the
Electric days. His youth gives him a trendy edge yet he sings
with a maturity. This songwriter also records his material; this
young man is going places.
Susan Surftone UP DOWN AND ALL AROUND
This is the second track by Susan Surftone. Produced by Gar Francis, this song has a
strong 1960s Yardbirds, Paul Revere and the Raiders sound. Backing vocals are
handled by Mia Moravis. This is a tightly produced number and a terrific song.
Spyder Darling- NEW YORK WALKABOUT
New York City is in the house with Spyder
Darling. A rocking song with a strong punk
influence, “Walkabout” is a bit Lou Reed and
a bit Iggy Pop and a lot of attitude. Spyder
is no stranger to the rock scene, playing well
known venues on both coasts- L’Amour, the
Whiskey a Go Go, Gazzari’s, CBGB’s to name a few.
Spyder Darling is an example of once rock and roll is in
your blood, it is here to stay.
Gar Francis- RAINY DAY WOMEN #12 & 35
I had the privilege of reviewing this video not too long
ago. This is probably the best Bob Dylan cover I have
heard. If Bob recorded this song today, it would sound
like this. Unique yet respectful of the original, this one
deserves much more recognition.
Zombie Garden Club- A WHITER SHADE OF PALE
ft. JOHNNY DOUGLAS
Something I tend to harp on- if an artist is going to record
a cover of a well-known track; do it justice and make it
your own. Dare I say I like Zombie Garden Club’s
version of this song better than the original? This is Procol Harum’s most recognized song.
Zombie Garden Club strips the song down to its basic core and then runs with it. Good job.
The Chords UK-DEDICATED FOLLOWER OF
FASHION
This band is straight out of the 1960s British Mod
scene, this time recording a song written by The Kink’s
Ray Davies. This is the perfect track to end this
compilation on a high note. I want to hear more from
this band.
