It’s hard to believe I am writing my last newsletter article as Houston BOMA president and that 2 years have flown by as fast as they have. The old saying is right, time really does fly when you are having fun and I can say my time as president has been nothing short of fun.

There is a lot that goes in to making everything happen at Houston BOMA. Being the leader of the organization is really the easy part, it’s all the work that goes in to the events, education and legislative advocacy that takes a lot of work and that doesn’t happen without the help of a lot of dedicated people. The volunteers that give their time to committees and events are the ones that make it all possible. I know how much time goes in to volunteering, and I see the dedica-tion from so many. I am truly thankful and appreciative of all the hard work and passion that is given to make it all happen.

The BOMA staff is also without a doubt the best there is anywhere. Everyone involved in Houston BOMA is lucky to have 5 extremely dedicat-ed and hardworking people behind all that we do as an organization. I have been honored to spend a lot of time with all of them and see how

hard they work to meet the goals we set for the organization. I can’t imagine anyone being able to do it better and I am honored to have served while working alongside each and every member of the Houston BOMA staff.

I also have to thank the Board of Directors for all of their support and dedication to making Houston BOMA great. It sometimes seems like there is a never ending supply of work and new ideas the Board of Directors is discussing and without fail they always come through and find a way to support BOMA. I have learned a lot from those serving alongside me and I greatly appreciate each and every one of them for all they have done to support me.

Our Allied Professional Members make a lot of what we do possible and I constantly try to thank them for everything. We have a great group of supporters through the Allied Professional members and we should all be doing as much as can to support them. Buying BOMA first is the biggest way we can all show our appreciation for everything they do to support us now and in the future.

There are many others that I want to thank for their support. My family and friends have all had to support

me in various ways throughout my term as president. Whether it’s my children missing me at one of their events, or my friends having to help me with something I should be doing myself, my clients under-standing when I am not available to them as much as they would like, my employer understanding I really have two jobs- the one they pay me to do and the one I find myself doing while they pay me, or those closest to me who I rely on for help, wisdom, support and love. They have all helped me while also forgiving me for putting them second to what has to be done for BOMA.

The future of Houston BOMA is bright and I pass the torch to Meredith Cress who will do a great job leading us to the future. There are many exciting things ahead of Houston BOMA and I am excited to see them all happen very soon in the future.

I want to end by simply saying THANK YOU to everyone that has done so much for Houston BOMA. You are the greatest and you help make Houston BOMA the greatest with all you do. n

Meet your Houston BOMA internationally recog-nized team of professionals who work hard every day to deliver the best programming and services the commercial real estate industry has to offer.

By tammy K. Betancourt, CAE, Executive Vice President and COO

Our Team wOrKinG FOr yOU

Melissa thuston is our meeting planner extraordinaire. As Director of Development and Special Events, we can thank Melissa for the flawless execution of each and every social and membership event we host. Melissa also handles our development needs and is responsible for getting commitments and exe-cuting our sponsorship program. She is the deliverer of the ROI for your sponsorship dollars. Melissa has been with BOMA since 2013 and we love her because she is not only creative and meticulous, but might possibly be the nicest person on the face of the earth. And she’s a Cowboys fan.

Melissa was born and raised in Kemp, Texas and has been married to husband Ryan for three years. They celebrated the birth of their beautiful daughter Isabella (Bella) in May and they now have no inter-ests outside of work and family.

Kara Mathews, is the guru of all things member-ship and education. Kara, who answers to Manager of Membership and Education, can assist with any question you may have on membership status, educational offerings, how to get involved in leader-ship development programs and volunteer opportunities. Kara’s quiet but she’s fiercely dedicated to membership satisfaction and producing the highest quality educational programming available. Unfortunately, she’s not a Cowboys fan (but she’s not a Texan fan either so that’s okay).

Kara lives in the Clear Lake area (Seabrook) and has been married to her husband, Nick for eight years. They enjoy anything outdoors with their two dogs Beckett (black labradoodle) and Marley (tan corgi/dachshund mix) and spends a lot of time in Galveston. Kara lives in a one mile radius of her parents, sister, and three best friends from high school, so a lot of free time is spent with friends and family.

George Morgan is our resident go-to for all things techno-logical. George’s official title is Marketing and Communications Coordinator and he is the man who gets those newsletters and emails to your inboxes with style. He’s a wiz at social media

and is the person behind our posts on Linked In, Twitter and Facebook. George also coordi-nates and executes all website content. Not only is George great at his job, but he’s always so danged helpful and always right there to lend a hand when one is needed. Since graduating

from University of Houston with a degree in Corporate Commu-nication, George has spent time working as a communications specialist in various industries, most recently as the Director of Communications for nationwide health food chain, My Fit Foods.

In his free time, George enjoys playing competitive paintball, watching the Dallas Cowboys, and spending time with his wife, Kristin, and their cadaver search dog, Isaac.

And last but not least there’s tammy Betancourt, your Chief Executive Offi-cer. Tammy’s job is to make sure all of our wheels are turning in the same direction, be sure we are moving forward strategi-cally, work with the board of directors to ensure that our members are receiving excellent and relevant programming and services, and most importantly, to repre-sent commercial real estate at the local and state levels. Because we are the only trade association representing the inter-ests of commercial property in Houston,

fending off the City, the County, HCAD, and other regulatory agencies and their many ideas on how to squeeze another dollar out of commercial real estate is a full time job.

In her spare time Tammy enjoys snuggling with her grand-children (two here and one on the way). You may be surprised to know she is also raising a dozen or so chickens and is now proficient at clearing brush and operating farm equipment. She’s a lover of all things gardening and she and her husband John celebrated 27 years of wedded bliss in June. A fan of all things Cowboys, Tammy is also a rabid supporter of The Ohio State Buckeyes and her UH Cougars. n

Jan reynolds is our part-time Administrative Assistant and is generally first on the phone. Jan assists callers navigate Houston BOMA’s programs and will be that friendly voice on the phone if you happen to be late paying an invoice. A four year BOMA veteran, Jan just welcomed her second grandson into the world in October. An avid gardener and reader, Jan also enjoys frequent trips to Arkansas to visit her family.

FOOdiE Find

By George Morgan Izakaya is the newest venture for the Azuma Group (Kata Robata, Soma Sushi), Manabu

(Kata Robata) and chef Jean Philippe Gaston (Cove). They have teamed up to bring this Japanese “pub” to Midtown, featuring two outdoor spaces, an extensive bar menu and globally inspired takes on Japanese small plates.

In true Midtown fashion Izakaya is, what feels like, wall to wall with wine and spirits while the brown and orange decorum creates a comfortable and upscale atmosphere. What is really brilliant about Izakaya is the menu that fuses traditional Japanese cuisine with west-ern techniques and tastes.

Dishes like Marinated Sirloin skewers that had dabs of fresh (real) wasabi on each piece blended together that makes you wonder if wasabi should be standard in every steak-house. Fusions like the Duck and Shrimp Shumai or House Made Meat Balls made from antelope and an egg yolk dip are pairings that most people would never even have dreamt of, but are so naturally complimentary.

A personal shining-star was the Portu-guese Octopus, an octopus tentacle boiled, chilled and then grilled to absolute perfec-tion. As for the raw stuff, it wouldn’t be a Japanese restaurant without some take on sushi, but you won’t find traditional nigiri or rolls at Izakaya. Items like the simply named, Snapper, offers sashimi snapper with charred citrus grapes that makes for a dish that has a powerful citrus presences that compliments the fish perfectly.

Long story short. Everything here is amazing.

While the typical stereotype of high-price low-quantity dishes that most tapas/small plate establishments suffer from still applies, Izakaya is actually quite reasonable for the quality of the food. However, if something says market price, ask what the actual market price is. Made the mistake of ordering the Wagyu A5 New York Strip (absolutely amazing but only 4 ounces) without asking the market price and was met with a price that was higher than any steakhouse in Houston.

All in all, Izakaya is definitely a great happy hour / date night establishment with a ton of interesting and creative dishes that will not disappoint. To learn more, give them a call or check out their website at www.houstonizakaya.com. n
