Jomok (Fairytale) CanyonThe Canyon opens up in all its majesty immediately, not giving you a chance to gather your thoughts so that you can recall previously seen wonders of the world, and overcome your naive, childish delight. From all sides observers are surrounded by immobilised, unusual forms of multicoloured gneous rock of the most brightly contrasting hues. From soft rafts of coloured soil clusters protrude plates of limestone and sandstone resembling the ruins of ancient castles or the skeletons of prehistoric monsters.Jomok Canyon doesn’t have its own legends coming from hoary antiquity. What is surprising is that this wonder of nature only became known outside Issyk-kul Province of Kyrgyzstan a couple of years ago. The soft rocks of various hues, lying in a multitude of different layers, are very yielding to outside forces. After it has rained the relief can change noticeably and the hues of the slopes of the canyon can change strikingly under the effect of strong winds. Indeed, being in Jomok under a calm, clear sky from morning till evening, the scenery will change every hour as the sun moves across the dome of the sky and casts its shadow on the earth. How to get there - take the 2nd turning to the left after the village of Tosor, 2 km towards the mountains.

The Valley of the Manzhyly-Ata Sacred SpringsHere is the qubba of the famous Sufi teacher and miracle worker who successfully spread Islam amongst the nomads. His cult was probably firmly established at the end of the 17th Century, a whimsical view interwoven with considerably earlier cultures, linked to worshipping the earth and water, the life-giving power of nature and the legends of Mother Olenikh – the mythological ancestor of the numerous Kyrgyz Bugu tribes. The sacred valley offers a labyrinth of shallow ravines between clayey, steppe hillocks cast from the bowels of the earth, from which a multitude of medicinal springs gush. Manzhyly-Ata qubba is a place of pilgrimage. People believe that if you want to have a lot of livestock you should kneel before the Cholon-Ata qubba and if you want a lot of children you should kneel before the Manzhyly-Ata qubba. Amongst the medicinal springs, hidden in the labyrinth of the Manzhyly-Ata Valley are other springs, which if you wash yourself with their waters can sharpen hearing and vision, soften hard creases in the hands and help acrobats balance. The springnamed Aziz is famed as a spring for the pious and religious. In the Mazhyly Gorge 8 sacred willows grow from whose base 12 main and 5 secondary springs flow, all having various healing properties. The origin of the words Manzhyly-Ata vary and one version says it is refers to the fingers of a man’s hand (in Kyrgyz, manzhylar-paltsy) because if you look upwards from the Gorge the hills remind you of the fingers of a man’s hand. Believers in aliens refer the version translated from Sanskrit – Man- were teachers who travelled from other worlds (other galaxies) to teach the inhabitants of Earth –Zhyly – how to live. How to get there - between the villages of Kadzhy-Say and Ton there is a sign saying ‘Manzhyly-Ata’.

Dead LakeShor-Kol’ a unique salt lake, also known as the ‘Dead Lake,’ is similar to the Dead Sea in Israel. The road to the lake goes through a canyon. A visit to the Dead Lake, opened in 2001 as a new tourist venue in Issyk-Kul, is a popular ‘medical tour’ during which tourists can actually read a newspaper while floating on the water that contains about 132 grams of salt per litre and even non-swimmers cannot drown in it. Here one can also take a mud bath (the mud has curative powers) and then clean off in the pure water of Lake Issyk-Kul, 400 m away. How to get there - turn off before Kyzyl-Tuu village.

Tastar-AtaClimbing to Tastar-Ata Peak at more than 3,800m looking for the magical source of stone cauldrons, is a great adventure.According to legend Manas’s Watch Tower sat on the peak, while another legend says that there are stone chalices withwater in them in these mountains. Even today many conquerors of the peak put notes under stones in hiding places. While descending you might meet shepherdsand their wives in their nearby yurts who will invite you to drink kumys (fermented mare’s milk), which will taste different in each yurt due to them using different herbs and the sweet aftertaste of mountain springs. You will see a lot of interesting things in the mountains.
