Emerging talent from Central and Eastern Europe was presented on an exhibition titled New Wave Photography, held at the Crypt Gallery, London from 18th- 26th February 2012.

The atmospheric catacombs of St.Pancras Church, Euston, venue of the gallery, hosted 11 young photographers from 6 countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic.

The exhibition demonstrated a high-level of technical ability as well as bold experimentation. Slovakian photographer, Peter Cibak introduces computer- generated figures into digital photographs in his series Zygota. Monika Stachos strikingly personal images demonstrate digital layering to create illusionary compositions of her childhood memories. Polish photographer, Katarzyna Niedzwiecka combines digital photomontage with gum print, a rare 19th century technique to create her surreal series The Animal Called Human.

New Wave Photography challenges the perception of Eastern European photography by displaying vibrant, experimental work that celebrates the youthfulness of the artists themselves.

    PETER CIBAK

Peter moved from Liptovsky Mikulas to Bratislava to study photography at the Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated in 2011. In his work he focuses on new technologies and their impact on the photographic medium. His series, Zygota depicts a power relationship between administrator and user.

This relationship unites virtual reality and traditional photographic images. I would like to point out that cyberspace is not just an alternative view of reality.

    LILI ZOE ERMEZEI

Lili was born in 1988 in Budapest. She graduated from the Moholy Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest with a MA degree in Photography. Her work has been shown at several solo and group exhibitions in Hungary, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Lithuania. She lives and works in Helsinki and Budapest.

Her series Body borders is a photographic experiment about the changing relationship between the model and the photographer. During the photo shoot the artist was not present and there was only a virtual connection between her and the models. She instructed them through Skype.

It is important for me to understand how the models feel about their own femininity and how their body-, and self-image would change during the photo shoot, compared with that of the usual fashion photo shoots.

    VIOLA FATYOL

Viola lives and works in Budapest. She graduated with a master degree in photography from Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in 2011.

Her series Orando et laborando Praying and working is based on personal memories surrounding her experiences at the Reformed College of Debrecen. Through her work she shows us the world of the school in an artistic light.

My aim was to put the values of the alma mater on a pedestal and to show how important the influence of a religious school might be.

The artist thanks the present students for their great help on this project.

    SVETOSLAV IVANOV

Svetoslav was born in 1974. He lives in Varna, Bulgaria. Photography has been one his main interests since the mid 80s. During this time he developed skills in digital retouching and manipulation.

The coast is a symbol of an end and a beginning, a place where we forget some dreams and find others. My series The Coast of Lost Thoughts is an expression of the lost dreams of voyages, boundless knowledge, the value of time, home comfort and ultimately an escape from death.

The project The animal called human imagines a time when animal behaviour becomes more human than people. It expresses stories from my mind.

    century.

    ALEXANDRA VACAROIU

Alexandra is 21 years old. During her foreign language studies, she realized that photography was her true passion. She decided to put her heart and energy into it and study Photography at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Romania.

The Unconscious Body Movements series looks at dreams and the traces they leave behind. Sheet folds are proof of unconscious body movements; they hide sensations we experience while dreaming.

On every curve lies the story of each dream, some of which we could never experience in reality. The photographs are like a map of our dreams. We can read the sheet folds and remember.

The project Adela Vosickova started when I thought about ones name as a representation or a portrait. Selected people spoke the artists name Adela Vosickova while pressing their lips against the photographic paper after using lip balm. The photographs show traces of their lips movements. The work was created by using black and white photographic material. It is a self-portrait through another persons gestures, as well a portrait of their own.

    ALEKSANDER WARZECHA

Aleksander is 21 years old and comes from Jaworzno, Poland. After graduating from Cracow School of Art and Fashion Design, he is continuing his education in Katowice where he studies graphic art. The project Asylum examines mental disorders such as schizophrenia, split personality and phobias. The work shows images from a patients brain, things we are usually unable to see. The photographs were taken in the ruins of an abandoned cement factory.

The dilapidated setting heightens the visual effect by referring to the mans damaged brain. Every photograph is made out of dozens of images.
