    Born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana where he grew up in dire poverty

    Played the cornet at 13 andlearned music by listening to pioneer jazz artists (King Oliver) 1920's : began recording his legendary sessions with hisHot FiveandHot Sevengroups & played in Mississippi riverboat dance bands

    Perfected theimprovised jazz soloas we know it & developed the idea of musicians playingduring breaks that expanded into musicians playing individual solos

    Marcus MillerMarcus MillerBorn 06/14/1959 in Brooklyn and raised in Jamaica, NY

    American musician (guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, saxophone, bass clarinet and composition),

    known as a style-defining electric-baser

    Comes from a musical family

    At the age of 5 : became deaf on his right ear due to measles

    At the age of 13 : was proficient on the clarinet, piano,bass guitar and had begun composing music

    His favorite instrument was the bass guitar

    He studied musical education

    Up to 1978 he was a member ofSaturday Night Live

    He found recognition both through his solo talent and as a creator of a lot of film musics (e.g.Boomerang with Eddie Murphy and Halle Berry), as well as a music producer

    You can hear him on more than 500 recordings

    He got his breakout with (his boyhood idol) Miles David in whose band he played beginning in1980. "He didn't settle for anything mediocre", Miller recalls. "And this helped me develop mystyle. I learned from him that you have to be honest about who you are and what you do. Ifyou follow that, you won't have problems."

    Produced albums for David (wrote the whole music)

    In 2002, he won a Grammy with his album M 2 asBest Contemporary Jazz Album
