an Action towardsa Sustainable Future

Greener IT,

“I have always believed that IT is the engine of an efficient economy; it also can drive a

greener one”Michael Dell, Forbes magazine

As we know that climates condition and glass house effect has become a serious problem facing the world today. It becomes primary concern from the major countries in the world since the last few decades. Although not everyone believes into the theory of global warming or believes that human actions have such a significant impact on the environment and even scientists share different opinions. However, there is enough evidence to prove that the earth’s resources are limited, so precautions must be taken for the future of our ecosystem. Information technology itself considered plays a certain role in the problem of climate change and global warming issues, yet on the other hand it evidently motivates enterprises to adapt Green IT. It’s no secret that data centers and computer networks account for an exceedingly high percentage of many companies’ total energy consumption. A report on 2009 by Gartner, industry analysts, said the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines - about 2% of global CO2 emissions and data centers are among the most energy-intensive facilities. By this, we can imagine how large the energy consumption of every company in this world that runs computer network and data center. Most business leaders need to

be quick in adapting Green IT such as improving power management, using energy-efficient hardware or adapting virtualization technology. The use of green IT is to save money and energy while reducing carbon footprints and preserving the environment.

Since two years ago, Biznet replaced telephone system over IP phones (VoIP) which requires less energy to operate than other compatible systems. Biznet Technovillage Project located in Cibubur, West Java, will have many green concept in terms of building design, landscape, power efficiency, lighting and data center cooling. By using solar panel for lighting, Biznet aimed to cut gas emission and save more energy. A Cloud Computing service, which will be ready in coming months, will provide shared computing facility (virtualization) in a secure environment

Our Future is Green

Now is the time for us to make practice Green IT for sustainable future. All stakeholders must understand about the economic and environmental management. Through technology and innovation, we could decrease environmental impact and be responsible for the future of our next generation.

Famous for its plentiful underwater wonders and laidback island charm, the government then settled the place as one of the Marine National park on Indonesia in October 1991 named Bunaken National Park (TNB). Nowadays, it attracts both local and international tourist and

Here are some diving tips for beginners. First of all you must be in a reasonably good shape and must be comfortable underwater. Although Scuba diving does not necessarily required good swimming technique, it is best to feel comfortable underwater just as you are above surface. Then, beginners should always enroll in a certified dive school to get a genuine experience of diving in a safe and controlled environment. Aside from the basics lesson by the qualified instructors, safety skills such as clearing your mask underwater, signaling, managing low air supply and reinserting oxygen regulators are also an important part to learn. Third, all scuba diving activities should be done with the basic, appropriate gear, and these would be your mask,

Bunaken Island

fins, Buoyancy-Control Devices (BCD) and wetsuits. Most dive shops around Bunaken Island would provide the necessary equipment, but you should consider having your own masks and snorkels to avoid if the mask u bought on the dive shop might not suited your face and disrupt your vision underwater. Next, new divers are always required to dive with guides or “buddies” who could check and help with the necessary equipment. So you better bring your friends to accompany. It is also important to choose a reputable guide for your first dive. Not only they have the best experience underwater, they would also be prudent enough in dealing with any problems that may be encountered underwater. Last, being relaxed is the most important thing when scuba diving. Be relaxed and enjoy your underwater adventure for a memorable diving experience. So let’s go to Bunaken Island and be the one to experience the incredible collection of Bunaken’s sea life!

Tips & Tricks

On the Internet there are some tutorials about shutting down a computer from a mobile phone. But, there’s a way to shutdown a computer from a mobile phone using PHP. PHP is a scripting language in simple words. It used as server side scripting language, platform independent and open source. That means we don’t have to worry about whether the system runs on Windows or Linux. The procedure is really simple. All we have to do is to set up a server on the computer with PHP and execute system command to shutdown the computer.

1. SERVER SETUP

Use XAMPP to set up the server.

Go to XAMPP home page. Download the available package (installer or zip archive).

Now, follow the instruction given on their site to install the server. Actually installation is just unzipping the archive to a directory. The installation will take just around 2 minute.

2.PHP code

• After installing XAMPP, just open up XAMPP directory. Then you will locate htdocs folder. Open that and create a new directory/folder. You can name it anything

Morris Worm

On 2 November 1988, the first major attack hit the Internet named Morris Worm, disabling 10% of the Internet’s 60,000 host computers. Surprisingly it was written by a 23-year-old doctoral student at Cornell University, named Robert Tappan Morris. The Morris worm was part of a research project and was not designed to cause damage, but it was programmed to self-replicate. Unfortunately, the code contained a bug that allowed the worm to infect a single machine multiple times, which resulted in thousands of computers grinding to a halt.

Security Threats Rise Along with Usage

Hundreds of more sinister attacks occurred as the fast internet users grow. The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) even stopped counting the number of security incident reports it received in 2004 because attacks against Internet-connected systems had become so commonplace that it felt this figure was getting too big to track.

Internet VS Electricity Consumption and CO2 Production

Google uses an estimated 15 billion KWh of electricity per year, more than most countries. However, Google generates a lot of their own power with their solar panels.

One Google search produces about 0.2g of CO2. But since you hardly get an answer from one search, a typical search session

produces about the same amount of CO2 as does boiling a kettle.

Spam generates 33 billion KWh of energy every year, enough to power 2.4 million homes, producing 17 million tons of CO2.

you want. Suppose the name of the new folder is shutdown.

• Open the newly created folder shutdown and create a new file with index.php extension.

• Now open up index.php file and place the nice little code if you run windows.

To find out your IP address just visit any site like http://checkmyip.com/.

That’s it. Now you visit that link with no-ip subdomain from your mobile phone to shut down the computer.

I’ve been working very hard, and by the time I got home, I’m paying my family back”, Adhi admitted. Beside that, Adhi also usually spend his time for a challenging sport game during his leisure time. “I love sport and I seriously went crazy on basketball. When I’m in the field, I can totally express my soul into the game”. At the end, Adhi expressed his faith on

Ali Zainal Abidin, often called Ali, joined Biznet in July 2008 as NOC (Network Operation Center) staff. Later he was promoted as Supervisor of NOC on January 2010 as he shows his persistence

and determination in work. Ali’s current scope of work is focus on Layer 3 in network operation, which is more complicated than we have thought. According to that, Ali’s duty has to do with IP distribution and bandwidth management of Biznet’s customers.

During his time at Biznet, of course, Ali had experience fun and hard time. “I had the chance to climb Mount Salak together with my colleagues. I felt so proud and happy at the time I conquered and reached the top of Mount Salak” explained Ali eagerly. “But sometimes I have to spend more time for my work

rather than with friends and family, still, I can see this as a challenge and I would always put my biggest effort for the best result” added Ali when being asked about his experiences during his work.

Ali loves everything related to sports when it comes to his hobby. It happened that he’s an adventurous person who likes challenge. “My favorite is football and futsal, I can spend two evening in every week joining football or futsal match, it’s just fun to gather up with your friends and have exercise at the same time”. Besides sport, Ali also loves to watch movie series. “A huge amount

Biznet success in the future.“I truly feel that Biznet could be a leader in telecommunication industry by giving the best contribution for the development of Telecommunication industry in Indonesia”, marked Adhi.

of movie series is just never enough to be watched. My favorites are Chuck, Prison Break, Castle and many more. I just could sit in hours with a nice straight and snacks just to watch my favorite movie series at home”, said Ali. When it comes to his hopes for Biznet, Ali don’t need to think long in finding an answer. He simply defined his hope that Biznet could continue to expand its network in the future. “Hopefully Biznet can continue to expand more fiber optic network to reach every parts of Indonesia, so that Biznet can positioned its company as major telco among all,“ marked Ali at the end.

loves to try a wide variety of food from different place and country. “It’s good to know that world has a diverse kind of food with good taste and to be able to travel and eat good food is truly a blessing from God”, admitted Marshall. Besides traveling Marshall also enjoys different kind of music, but who ever thought before that this calm person picked Hip Hop as his favorite genre among all. When it came to the hope for Biznet, Marshall hopes that Biznet could become a telco that can provide the best quality of service, “To face competition with other telcos, beside focus on giving affordable price, we have to consider giving the best quality of service to satisfy our customers”.

History

From the day computer was invented, there are many malicious programs written by some notorious mind to cause widespread damage to computers across the world. It is known as virus. Initially, there were still less number of privileged people having access to Internet and only a fraction of the PCs were part of network, so it wasn’t easy for virus to be spread at the time.

But as the computing technology improved and Internet played a major role in people’s life, it is easier for virus creator to attack through Internet and cause more damage in lesser time. Especially in the last decade which has seen enormous amount of damage caused due to virus.

On 1982, Elk Cloner is regarded as the first virus to hit personal computers worldwide. Elk Cloner spread by infecting the Apple II operating system using a technique, now known as a “boot sector” virus. If a computer booted from an infected floopy disk, a copy of the virus was placed in the computer’s memory. When an uninfected disk was inserted into the computer, Elk Cloner would be copied to the disk, thus allowing it to spread from disk to disk.

Once a computer has been compromised by a virus, it is usually unsafe to continue using the same computer without completely reinstalling the operating system. However, there are a number of recovery options that exist these days. These actions depend on severity of the type of virus. Plus you can also make a prevention steps to protect your computer, such as installing anti virus and make sure your operating system has the latest updates.
