Cardinal Rule (n): 1. A fundamental rule that must not be broken at any time. 2. A value or set of values a Bishop Guertin student lives by.

Synonym: Core Value

Cardinal rules differ among each student. They are values that our students hold dear, an

unwritten set of rules that are important to each one of them. Throughout this book, you

will see rules that our students live by. Now the question is: What rules do you live by?

Page 3: Bishop Guertin

Bishop Guertin is a school like no other.

We are students who care about learning, in a place where it is cool to be smart. We are athletes who pride ourselves on our skill and sportsmanship. We are artists, musicians, andactors who share our gifts in a community that supports artistic expression. We are debaters, computer programmers, mathematicians, guitar players, student government leaders. We areyour study partners, your teammates, your friends.

We are teachers who care about our students. We inspire a love for learning and the desire tobe outstanding. We show by example that it is important to think deeply and work hard. Wetake the time to get to know all our students, to help them explore their gifts and talents, and todevelop the skills they need to succeed in college and in life.

We are a community that cares deeply about each other, where every individual is known, valued, and treasured. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart, who share their gifts with us every day, help us explore our faith and our relationship with God. And together, we reach out to othersthrough service projects that help us learn what it means to be a moral and spiritual person.

Since 1963, roughly 6,000 students have walked these halls and have been the heartbeat ofour school. We celebrate our individuality, and we also cherish our collective mission tolearn, teach, share, work, give, and grow.

We are Bishop Guertin.

of Theology and Ministry

“Campus ministry exists to

help students discover that

God created them intentionally

and wonderfully, and to give

them the resources they need

to be true to that call. Every

prayer service, liturgy, service

trip, and retreat serves that

core purpose. I love working at

BG because I share the values

of the people I work with—

that’s a rare find.”

DR. ROB PINSONNEAULT, “DOC P,” SCIENCE TEACHER

B.S., Fairfield University;

Ph.D., University of Vermont;

Postdoctoral fellow, University of

California at San Francisco

“At BG, there is a passion surplus;

these students love to ask

questions and dig deeper.

Each summer, BG juniors work

alongside graduate students and

professors from around the world

to survey and categorize the

remarkable types and kinds of life

on Earth. This year, we’re headed

to Peru. It’s an unparalleled

opportunity to travel to biologically

diverse regions to learn how real

science is carried out.”

#3 We give school spirit a whole new meaning.

MEET BG: BR. DONALD TARDIF SC

MATH TEACHER

“After teaching in Zambia for 21 years, I came to BG in 1989. I showed slides

of my time there, and the students expressed interest in organizing a mission

trip. We now do a three-week trip each summer: our students work with the

schoolchildren there and help renovate the facilities. For our students, it’s

eye-opening: they experience firsthand what it means to live in the third

world and how rewarding it is to give of yourself.”

Page 15: Bishop Guertin

Being a member of the BG community means treatingyour fellow students and teachers with compassion, empathy, and respect. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart, whose mission

and dedication inspire our school, live on campus andparticipate in every part of the school day, from teaching classes to serving in Campus Ministry. In religion classes each semester, students study Catholicism andChristian values while also exploring world religions, ethics, and social justice. Our campus ministry is an active part of daily life. The staff leads masses and

liturgies for community members to come together for prayer and reflection. Thecampus ministry also plans regular retreats each year for students to talk about their lives, their spiritual andemotional development, and their relationship with God. BG students share their gifts through regular service

projects that take them around the country and across theworld, from helping in local food pantries, to rebuildinghomes in New Orleans, to an annual mission trip toZambia each summer, where students volunteer at St.Francis Secondary School in Malole.

MEET BG: JOE MELI, STUDENT

“I chose Bishop Guertin because of the challenging academics, religious

education, and competitive sports. Some of my favorite classes have includ-

ed Psychology, Economics, Algebra II and American History. I’m also a mem-

ber of the baseball team, the Spanish Club, and Cornerstone (a volunteer

club), and I serve as a homeroom representative and a student ambassador.

Coming to BG as a transfer student, I wanted to be involved in so many

different aspects of the school.”

#25 Be anything but ordinary.

Page 17: Bishop Guertin

Bishop Guertin students are well-rounded students—and we encourage everyone to get involved! Withmore than 50 clubs on campus, there are plenty of

opportunities to make new friends, explore new interests, orfocus on a favorite hobby. BG students love that there are so many choices available

to them and so many ways to be part of our community. Youname the club, we’ve got it—Mock Trial, Yearbook, Robotics,

Student Government, Peer Mentoring, Forensics, Environmental Club, Hiking,Fishing, Cribbage, and Ukulele, just to name a few. And if the club doesn’t exist yet,you can start one: BG’s clubs are based on student interest, so all that is required isyour dedication and commitment.Whether you’re planning an outing with the hiking club, running a bake sale to

raise money for the mission trip to Zambia, or cheering wildly for the Cardinals in the Nest (our student fan section in the gym), you’ll find that being involved instudent activities is one of the best parts of being at BG. Students develop lastingfriendships with advisors, teachers, and other students outside the classroom—and learn how great it feels to work with others towards a shared goal.

Our MissionAt Bishop Guertin High School, our single focus is the youngpeople in our care. Our mission is to challenge our studentsin every aspect of the human person—intellectual, emo-tional, physical, social, and spiritual—to reach their truepotential. This mission is made evident through an educa-tional philosophy built on God’s love for us all; a strong col-lege preparatory curriculum; and a commitment to nurturein young people an awareness of their gifts and to preparethem to make a difference in our world.

About the Brothers of the Sacred HeartIn 1821, Father André Coindre founded the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. His chief mission became the moral, intellectual, and religious development of young orphan boys left in distress at the end of the French Revolution. His dream was a community of Brothers trained to work with the poorthrough the establishment of schools, and by 1859, therewere over 400 Brothers in 70 schools.

In 1847, five missionary Brothers of the Sacred Heartarrived in Mobile, Alabama, to begin charitable and educational work. With a presence in the United States, thecongregation began its transformation into a worldwideinstitute, spreading throughout North America in the South,New York and New England areas and also Canada. Today, there are 11 Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools across theUnited States and the United Kingdom.

From the beginning, the Brothers have advocated for acompassionate, holistic, and personalized approach to education that addresses each individual’s religious, academic, social, psychological, physical, and cultural needs.

The Rule of Life of the Brothers describes this mission as"to rescue the young from ignorance, to prepare them forlife, and to give them a knowledge and love of religion."That mission lives on today in this school community, ineverything we do.
