CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACTFROM ERICA NEEL, GBAHB REMODELERS CHAIRMAN

The upcoming birth of my first child has made mereflect on my childhood. I think of all of the traditionsthat were established and where they took place. Like

many of you, I can visualize the small details of the roomsthat I inhabited as a child. I can picture the butcher block

formica countertops with the harvest gold appliances in my first home. I canalso remember the sunken den and how the shag carpet felt on my feet. Inmy second home, I remember the beautiful oak cabinetry in the kitchen andthe arched double door at the entry. These memories are intertwined with theholidays, family gatherings, and the daily life we led in our home.

So often we forget about how important our homes are to us. Many times we think about the maintenance or the housework we have to do to keep themup, but we must also remember that our surroundings in our home make usfeel certain emotions. We all want to live somewhere that is pleasing to uswhether that be with carpeted or hardwood floors, with stained or painted cabinetry, or with brick or siding on our house. Our homes are essentially anextension of our personality and taste and serve an integral part in our dailylives. We need to love them.

As Chairman, I want to assure you that my industry has many qualified professionals who are able to transform your current home into a remodeledmasterpiece or create a perfect custom home from scratch. Now is the time to act. Interest rates are at an all time low, but are steadily rising. Labor prices are at record low levels. We understand that in these challenging economic times, we must spend our money wisely. That time is now. Let’s make memories together.

CERTIFIED EXPERTS

When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying

a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identifybuilders and remodelers who have committed themselves tocontinually improving their skills and being committed to theirprofession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodelerwith a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, andin-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB)The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed stan-dards of practice, possess at least two years building industry expe-rience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledgesto uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designedto emphasize business and project management skills as the key toa professional building operation.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR)The CGR course emphasizes the development of business manage-ment skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation.Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standardsof business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodelingindustry experience, have a proven track record of successful remod-eling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, andpledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE ASSOCIATE (CGA)The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunityto enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home buildingindustry. Modeled after the CGB curriculum, this designation isattained by completing three required and three elective courses whichfocus on improved management skills and business performance. TheCGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP)The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified GreenProfessional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and otherindustry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. MASTER BUILDER (MB) / MASTER REMODELER (MR)The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of HomeBuilders is to further enhance the professionalism of participatingmembers and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must passa rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as MasterBuilder or Master Remodeler. Often referred to as the “fifth wall,”your floor and how you cover it canhave a big impact on any remodel-

ing project. Floor covering can affectyour project’s character, durability, andbudget.

According to Reneé LeCroy of Don’sCarpet One Floor & Home in Trussville, choosing flooring for your home doesn’thave to be complicated, but you doneed to do your homework. “The entiresquare footage of your home needs tobe covered with some type of flooring,”she says. “You need to think about howyou want the room to look, how you aregoing to use the space, and how muchyou want to spend.”

BUILDING CHARACTERFloor covering has a major impact onthe look and feel of a room. The type offlooring you select can help you instill acertain character in your space. Forinstance, if you desire a clean, modern

look, the right tile might help youachieve it. A rustic or “north woods”motif can be brought to life with a woodfloor. The right carpeting might suggestwarmth and comfort.

“Floor covering is fashion,” saysLeCroy. “Your floor is your largest wall,so choosing the right material and lookcan really make a difference.”

TRAFFIC PATTERNAccording to Matt Smith of RiverchaseCarpeting and Flooring in Pelham, noth-ing in your home gets more use thanyour flooring.

“When selecting any type of flooring,it is critical that you consider theamount of wear and tear it is going toget,” he says. “Consider floor traffic, aswell as room usage.” For instance, akitchen or main bathroom that getsheavy use and foot traffic needs a hard-er-wearing floor covering than the mas-ter or guest bedrooms.

Other questions to ask yourselfinclude: Do you have children? Do youhave pets? Do you plan on doing a lot ofentertaining?

And while the durability of your floorcovering is certainly a matter of the typeof material you select, the amount youinvest in a particular material can alsohave an impact. “If you want your car-peting to look as good in 10 years as itdoes when you install it, you are goingto need to invest a little bit more persquare foot,” Smith advises.

COST/BENEFIT CONSIDERATIONSWhether you are building a home orremodeling a particular space, you willneed to cover the floors. And thatmeans budget appropriately for the typeof flooring you want to install.

“Homeowners need to do someresearch to set their flooring budget,”LeCroy comments. “Too often, the floor-ing budget is an afterthought. While itmight be tempting to go with the lowestprice per square foot, you probably willnot get the quality you desire,” shesays.

LeCroy writes a blog (yourfifthwall.com)that provides information on differentflooring categories and what averageprices homeowners should expect.

FLOORING TRENDSFlooring for your home can basicallybe divided into two different cate-gories: soft-surface and hard-surface.There are many different brands andoptions to choose from, but basicallyyour choices include: hardwood, lami-nate, vinyl, tile, cork, bamboo, carpet, and linoleum. Whatever you choose, each type has unique characteristicsand advantages.

Hard surfaces—more specifically, hardwood floors—are currently the topchoice of most newly built or remodeledhomes. Hardwood flooring is becomingmore popular in many rooms that haveotherwise been carpeted in the past, and then area rugs are placed on top.Hardwood floors typically have a lowerlife cycle cost than carpet and add morevalue when it’s time to sell the home.

Other choices for hard surfacesinclude ceramic tiles and laminatewhich are also dominating the residen-tial flooring options. In contrast, thecarpeting trends continue to movetoward softer, textured, and more luxu-rious styles. Area rugs not only addcharm, warmth, and comfort to a space, but rugs are leading the way as thehottest decorating feature.

When choosing flooring options, hereare some options to choose from:

HARDWOOD FLOORSHardwood floors can add old-world ele-gance with modern twists, moving moretoward distressed planks, wider widths, and exotic woods. Depending on howyou want the room to look, hardwoodflooring can be elegant or rustic. Keepin mind when you choose the kind ofwood, you want it to be beautiful as wellas durable. Explore the variety of finish-es, colors, and wood types available. You are sure to find a look you’ll like.

The most popular hardwoods includeoak, then maple, and ash. Specialtywoods tend to be more expensive, how-ever, they are often quite beautiful.Depending on your budget, you maywant the luxurious look of specialtywoods. Walnut, teak, and cherry arepopular choices.

You can also customize your woodfloor, arranging it in a unique design, orusing different stains. Unexpectedshades of stain can make your floorstand out like no other.

FLOOR TILECeramic floor tiles offer timeless beau-ty and durability. Travertine tile is alsoanother flooring option becoming moreand more popular. One of the mostdurable of all tiling materials areceramic tile and natural stone materi-als, which, when properly installed, can last the lifetime of a house. Thisdurability, combined with the naturalbeauty of stone and the fantasticoptions of tile types, colors, patterns, and textures makes tile and stone thematerials of choice where quality andcharacter are important.

“Tile is very popular right now, par-ticularly Travertine products,” saysFred Henry of the Robert F. Henry Tile Company in Birmingham. “From adesign standpoint, the trend is towarda polished clean look, as opposed tothe rustic look that dominated designfor some time. We’re gradually movingtoward cleaner lines and simplerdesigns.”

CERAMIC TILE VS. STONECeramic tile and stone are very differ-ent. Stone flooring can include quarriedslate, limestone, flagstone, granite, ormarble. Natural stone tile is a relativelyaffordable alternative to stone and ismade from real stone aggregate sus-pended in a polymer binder.

“Choosing the right stone tile is usual-ly a combination of personal preferenceand budget considerations,” says AngelaHicks of Jenkins Brick & Tile in Pelham.Marble and granite, for example, offer amore formal appearance. The moreexpensive of stone flooring, marble is anelegant, ornamental stone that takes ahigh polish. Both sandstone and lime-stone are more brittle but less costly.

Ceramic tile is made from slabs ofclay that are known for hardness.Ceramic tile may be either glazed orunglazed. Glazed tiles have very hard, smooth surfaces that reject water andstains. Again, this is yet another time toconsider the traffic in the room.

VINYL FLOORINGThis flooring offers so much to choosefrom. You can choose the look of stone, ceramic, and hardwood, and sheet vinyland vinyl tiles are an easy solution fortoday’s homeowner looking for qualityand design. Vinyl tiles are also easy toinstall and are popular for many do-it-yourself projects. Like Vinyl sheet, vinyltile is durable, affordable, and easy tomaintain. Vinyl sheet flooring comes in avariety of styles from wood looks to natu-ral stone, to patterned designs. Vinylsheet is also durable and is an easy-to-clean floor type that can be installed any-where in the home. It is also known forits resistance to scuffs, stains, and spills.

CARPETING Once known as the most practical homeflooring, carpet can bring color andwarmth into every room. Your optionsare endless when it comes to patterns, colors, textures, and is still one of thetop-selling floor coverings today.

You may be overwhelmed by themany choices when it comes to carpet.Don't choose carpeting only for its color.Consider the carpet's fibers and con-struction, as well as your lifestyle andhow you use the room it will be in.

Patterned carpets are increasinglypopular. The patterns are made of cut &loop pile. Plush or cut-pile carpet hasloops trimmed off so that yarn endspoke up. While a popular choice, plush

carpet doesn't tend to wear as well asberber carpeting. Berber carpet createsa nubby texture with complete yarnloops that stand upright.

Wool is a popular carpeting fiber. Ittends to cost more than synthetics, butit's comfortable, durable, and naturallooking. Be aware that direct sunlightwill fade wool fiber over time.

Synthetic fibers are made from sev-eral artificial materials. Nylon is themost popular because of its durability, although it can be damaged by pro-longed exposure to sunlight.

“There are also an increasing num-ber of value-added features availableon newer carpeting,” says Smith.“Stain resistant and odor absorbingproducts are becoming more and moreavailable.”

CORK FLOORINGKnown for its comfort to walk on, corkflooring is also very warm, and is gain-ing popularity among older people whoare remodeling their homes while keep-ing “aging-in-place” a priority.

BAMBOO FLOORSAn extremely environmentally friendlyhardwood, bamboo is becoming one of the most popular flooring trends.Although it is currently more popular onthe west coast, it is also gaining popu-larity throughout the United States.Technically a grass, not a wood product, bamboo is a renewable resource thatcan be harvested every five years.Additionally, bamboo is actually harderthan hardwood floors, which makes it amuch more durable material.

LAMINATE FLOORINGOriginally from Europe, laminatefloors are practical due to their dura-bility, hard wearing, and beautifuloptions. Laminates offer stone andgranite patterns for unlimited decorat-ing possibilities.

LINOLEUMAlthough not nearly as popular inupscale remodeling projects, linoleumwas known for being environmentally

friendly years ago. It is available in alarge selection of colors and patternsand is suitable for any decorating solu-tion. Linoleum is durable and environ-mentally friendly. It can enhance manyrooms with its marbled patterns andunique designs.

RUGSThis versatile decorating choice can addcharacter to any room. You can use yoursense of style and personality in anyarea of your home. This year, luxuriousshag rugs in front of roaring fireplacesare a big hit with decorators.

CONSULT AN EXPERTAccording to LeCroy, whatever flooringyou choose, make sure you consult withan expert. “Professionals understandmaterials, textures and colors, and theycan help you get the most value persquare foot. Importantly, an expert willmake sure your price is the totalinstalled price and that you understandwhat your product warranty includes. They will also make sure you understandhow to maintain your flooring so you getthe most out of your investment.”

When adding an addition or renovating a space, thegoal is to make the new look like it was always there. This is never more important than with a historical renovation. It is also incredibly challenging. Cabinets, tile, and even bricks are not made like they were 70,80, or more years ago. While our processes have made it easier to manufacture many of these materials, theyhave also made it harder to match these materials to ahome built long ago. But it is possible and here’s how.

Page 17: Birmingham Summer 2011

of the home needed to be replaced dueto a termite infestation, the Spratlingstook the opportunity to replace the porchwith a space more in keeping with thehistorical style of the home.

“The back porch never really lookedlike the rest of the house,” Susan com-ments, “and my son, who has a back-ground in architecture, created a designtrue to the home’s original style. Heincorporated architectural details andconstruction materials that matched thehome’s original style.”

Susan credits Mike McKay, Presidentof OakAlley, with bringing her son’sdesign to life. “Mike’s genius was to comeinto our home, see what we wanted to do,and then make it better,” she says.

REMODELING AND RESTORING The remodel starts with a gull wingroof, arched entryway, and concretewater table that replicates the originalarchitecture. New brick was tirelesslywoven into place making a seamlesstransition between the old and thenew. Inside, the bead board ceilingand textured walls preserve the histor-ical appearance. The addition servesas the home’s most frequently usedentry and its laundry area. Cabinetrydesigned to match the home’s originalcupboard conceals laundry and sewingappliances. It also adds much-neededstorage. Granite countertops make thespace attractive as well as functional.HVAC ducting through the attic is sup-plemented by radiant heat in the floor. And the attic space over the new laun-dry provides a much-needed closet forthe bedroom above it.

Also, the homeowners preferred a newroute to the sunroom. The as-built sun-room entrance was up steps, across thelanding, and back down steps. Thismade a very awkward way to enter thesunroom. By relocating the bathroom tothe new addition, adding matching hard-wood floors and a new light fixture, abeautiful entry way was created. Withthe steps in the sunroom removed, brickwork and tile repair, the sunroom gaineddesired extra floor space.

“My husband and I spent about 30years standing in our hallway trying tofigure out how to get out to our sunroom

without having to go up and downsteps,” Susan says. “Mike took one look, said we could move our small bathroomto the new addition, build a new door-way, and get rid of the stairs. It took himabout two seconds to figure that out,”she chuckles.

Importantly, both the sun room andthe bathroom are now more functionalspaces. The sun room originally had sin-gle pane windows, so it could really onlybe used in the warmer months. Byadding double pane glass, it has nowbecome a year-round space.

Moving the bathroom to the new addi-tion allowed it to be enlarged so a showercould be added. With aging parents whostruggle with stairs, having a full bath-room on the first floor is very desirable.

Many other areas of the home werealso repaired, refinished, and upgraded, improving the home’s beauty and integri-ty. The bead board ceiling and texturedwalls were particularly important to pre-serving the home’s original look.

And while the six-month project is abig success, it wasn’t without its chal-lenges. According to McKay, previouswork done on the back porch prior toOakAlley’s involvement resulted in aconcrete slab being poured incorrectly.

“We painstakingly leveled and squaredthe slab after having an engineer certifythe foundation,” he says.

The home also had five levels ofkitchen floor in place that had to beremoved and replaced. Unfortunately, three of them had asbestos in them, requiring a complete asbestos abate-ment. Additionally, after exposing thebeams under the kitchen floor, it becameapparent that they would need to bereplaced as well.

SELECTING YOUR CONTRACTORSusan is adamant that finding the rightremodeling contractor makes all the dif-ference in having a successful remodel.“OakAlley did a great job,” she says.“We really love the results.”

She was referred to Oak Alley by afriend who is an interior decorator. Areferral from someone you trust is agreat way to find a remodeler for yournext project.

ADVICE TO OTHER HOMEOWNERSSusan’s advice to others consideringremodeling? “Look at details of yourhome and what attracted you to thehome to begin with,” she says, “thenstay true to those details.”

When Jim and Tricia Holbrookbought this five-bedroom, nine-bathroom home, five years ago

they knew that some projects would bedone throughout the home over theupcoming years.

The home was recently built, but ithad some work that they wanted to do.“There was a balcony loft above thefoyer that was not accessible from themain level of the home,” Tricia said.“The builder had a metal staircase thatwe didn’t love so we never installed it.”

WASTED SPACEAlthough Tricia liked having the balconyup there, it literally was wasted space.“There was no way to get up there.Unless we put a ladder up, there was noway to actually use the space.” She

would put a second Christmas tree upthere during the Christmas holiday, butother than that they didn’t use the 250-square-foot area.

“One of our friends recommendedputting our piano up there and that’swhen I kind of got possessed aboutusing the space. I thought the pianowould be super cool up there, and I alsowanted a home office.” The space isopen to the main level with balconiesoverlooking a sitting room as well asoverlooking the two-story foyer.

FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELERThe couple, which had owned previoushomes throughout the years, researchedarea remodeling companies to makeplans for adding a staircase and makingthe loft a usable area in the home.

“One of our designers that we hadworking on the home recommendedthat we check out Roddy O. Sample &Associates, Inc., in Pelham, AL.”Ironically, Jim, who had used Roddy O.Sample & Associates in a prior home ofhis, remembered what an excellent jobRoddy and his company had done forhim in the past, so they decided to havethem do the remodeling project.

GETTING STARTEDAccording to Roddy, the existing ironrailing of the balcony that overlooked thesitting room was removed and stored forreuse. “A double helix spiral staircasewith an iron handrail was installed in thecorner of the room. A landing was builtat the loft level to receive the top of thenew staircase,” Roddy said.

MATCHING FLOORINGHardwood flooring was installed on thenew landing to match the existing wideplank oak flooring of the loft and wasrefinished to match the mahogany stairtreads. “They did a great job on match-ing up the flooring,” Tricia said. “Inaddition, programmable disco stylelighting was added, which uniquely setsoff the new space—to say the least,”Tricia says.

“They wanted the new space to beelegant 90 percent of the time and theability for it to be party time the other10 percent,” Roddy said. The new “SkyBar” now serves this purpose; it workswell as an office, but also provides acool area for a cocktail party with liveentertainment.

Additionally, there are windows anda door that face the front yard anddrive that provide wonderful naturallight and a view of anyone coming orgoing.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES According to Roddy, there were severalchallenges to accomplish this project.“The first was to design a staircase thatwould blend with the existing decor andcomplement the existing curved floatingmain stairs that is located just a fewfeet away. We looked at options of astraight stair with a landing turn andseveral antique stairs from Europe.”

After researching online, a woodendouble helix spiral staircase was cho-sen. The staircase was built with closedstringers and risers and mahoganytreads to match the main stairs.

Another challenge was to build thewrought iron stair railing. The spiralstair does not have a center pole likemost typical spiral stairs. The iron rail-ing is on both sides of the treads. Thetop channel and rail cap had to behand forged to match the radius of thewooden stringers. “This was especiallytough on the inside rail because of thevery tight radius. One interesting note,is the detail in the balusters,” Roddysaid. Alternating balusters have one ortwo turned details.

“We had to use the two turneddetail balusters on all the inside rail toachieve the same look because it is sosteep. Obviously it was a challenge tomove a Baby Grand piano to a secondstory level with the only stairs being aspiral but we did it without a scratch,”Roddy said.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTSTricia and Jim couldn’t be happier withthe results. “I use the area quite fre-quently now and I just love it. I woulddefinitely recommend Roddy O. Sample& Associates; they did an excellent job.”

T he Dinsmore family has lived in this1983-built, four-bedroom, three- andone-half bathroom, 2,600-square-

foot home for the last ten years. The homehad two outdoor decks that the familyconsidered connecting over the years, butnever got around to it. “There were twodecks, and one was off of the master bed-room,” says Amanda Dinsmore. “It wasjust wasted space and it never really gotused. We wanted to take advantage of theoutdoor space so we looked into starting aremodeling project.”

When they decided to move forwardwith the project, they were having thegutters on their house replaced. Severalcontractors stopped by inquiring aboutthe project. “One of the contractors askedwhat we were planning on doing and theyrecommended that I talk with GeorgeWilliams with Precision Homecrafters inBirmingham. They highly recommendedhim and his company, and he actuallylived really close to us.”

Amanda had already looked into manyarea remodeling companies. “I wasn’tvery impressed with any of the compa-nies that I had already talked to. One wasterrible, just saying negative commentsabout our house and stating things thatwere wrong with it,” she said. At thatpoint, she decided to give George a call.“When I met with George, he was verynice to work with and he listened to whatI wanted out of the project.”

MET WITH COMPANYAccording to George, the scope of the proj-ect included demolition of two existingdecks and the construction of a screenporch with adjacent deck and steps. Thedesign and planning objectives includedcreating an outdoor space that would beusable in most weather conditions and thatwould accommodate many activities—ascreen porch for family relaxation and eat-ing, an adjacent deck that could be usedfor grilling, eating, or watching footballgames, and a child’s play area that is alsoaccessible from the master bedroom.

“The homeowners wanted a spacethat is bright and inviting that wouldfunction as a large entertaining area forfamily and friends, but would also pro-vide the feel of a private family get-awayarea for reading, relaxing, and just beingtogether,” George said.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES This job was not without its challenges. For example, the upstairs bay windowrestricted the required roof pitch andconfiguration. Five large pine trees hadto be removed and some footings wereon a steep incline of about 14 feetbelow the deck band board. “The home-owners agreed to remove the windowfrom one of the bay’s side panels on thesecond floor. This allowed us to installsheetrock on the interior wall where thewindow was removed and carry sidingthrough the exterior to provide adequatespace for the roof,” George said.

A priority for the homeowners was forthe screen porch to be off of the kitchenfor easy access when grilling out. “Wewanted better access to it so we couldspend time out there together as a fam-ily,” Amanda said.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTSThe addition of this screen porch and deckhas provided a spacious outdoor living areathat has exceeded all of the family’s needsand expectations. Adjacent to the deck isan entrance from the porch side, and patiodoors lead from the master suite.

Exposed rafters with a tongue andgrooved pine ceiling add to the spaciousfeeling, but also give a warm, cozy lookfor relaxing alone. The large deck pro-vides plenty of room for grilling, enter-taining friends and family, and just hang-ing out. It has become a gathering placeand the center of much activity. A ceilingfan creates a breeze on those dog days ofsummer, while a portable propane heaterknocks the chill off on cool days. Thewooded area behind the house adds alevel of privacy, yet they overlook the golfcourse, viewing a manicured fairway.

“We are really happy with the way itturned out,” Amanda said. “They werevery clean about the project and did anexcellent job. The proficiency was also abig priority for us; we wanted it done assoon as possible and they definitelyworked hard to make sure they did that.”

Two crucial goals of any remodelingproject are to get the space youdesire and to get the most bang for

your buck. Reba and Jon Myer achievedboth with a recent renovation of theirmaster bathroom. And they can prove it.Not only are they extremely happy withtheir remodel, but it earned them a stinton the HGTV show “Bang For Your Buck.”

The Myers are no strangers to remod-eling, having redone nearly every aspectof their 1950s-vintage ranch. Beginningwith removing its roof to add a secondstory, they have transformed their homeinto a modified Tudor. The master bath-room, however, was the one room theyhad not redone.

According to Reba, if it’s not thehome’s original master bathroom, itwas at least close in terms of age anddesign. “It was really old and unattrac-tive,” she says. “It needed to be totallyredone.”

In fact, with another newer bathroomsuite on the second floor, the coupleactually moved their bedroom upstairsfor a time.

“My husband came home and I hadmy bags packed. He asked me where Iwas going and I said I was movingupstairs,” she laughs. “I told him themaster bath did not ‘cut it’ and that hewas welcome to move with me. So wedid. It was then that we decided wehad better remodel,” she says, stillchuckling.

Ideas for the new bathroom camefrom magazines and looking at whatother people have done with their bath-rooms. “I love nice design and reallycollected ideas that intrigued me,”Reba says.

A NEW MASTER BATHROOMThe first step in the remodel was tomove some walls and totally gut theentire space. Every piece of sheet rockand existing tile was removed, so thenew project was truly started fromscratch. The original bath was expand-ed two feet into the bedroom and anadjacent guest room was incorporatedto include a walk-in closet.

Inside the door of the new bathroom,semi-custom maple cabinetry providesan elegant look. The cabinets them-selves are eggshell with pewter glazeand divide his and her sinks installed ina marble countertop. Twin mirrors withbronze light fixtures complete the wall.Natural Travertine tile covers the floor.

Straight back, under the window, sitsa large soaking tub. Inset and surround-ed by antique white penny roundceramic tile it features glass-frontedcabinets on each end and a large bronzelight fixture above. A sizable glass-sur-round shower is located opposite thesinks. Done in Travertine with a benchseat, the shower features two showerheads: a hand-held faucet and a rainhead shower coming out of the wall.Built-in insets hold shampoo and othershower essentials. A tile floor and tileaccents on the wall match the tilearound the soaking tub.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGESLee Welden, a designer with CounterDimensions, Inc., in Pelham, AL, whichworked on the project, said that themost challenging aspect of the projectwas the space plan. “The Myers did notwant any additional changes to theexterior, so the bathroom layout wasdetermined by the location of the exist-ing window,” Lee says. “The tub wascentered under it and balanced byglass-door wall cabinets at each end.”

The results are stunning. The roomexudes warmth and elegance, whilealso offering a significant amount ofstorage space thanks to the cabinetry.Importantly, the Myers are very happywith the results.

“We really love it,” says Reba. “It isexactly what we wanted.”

HGTV’S “BANG FOR YOUR BUCK”The premise of the HGTV program “BangFor Your Buck” is to compare three sim-ilar remodeling projects and decidewhich homeowners got the most for theirmoney. When the program came toBirmingham, the Myer remodel was rec-ommended to the producers.

After completing a questionnaireabout their new bathroom and providinga cost breakdown of the differentaspects of the remodel, the Myer’s proj-ect was selected as one of the threeremodels for the program.

Filming the program takes two days.On day one, the producer and twocamera people visited with Reba and

Jon and interviewed them about theirremodel. On day two, program hostVern Yip visited with expert realtorCollette McDonald.

“The second day is really fun and real-ly crazy,” Reba says. “You get to meetVern, which was really fun for my 10-year-old daughter, and a bunch of cam-era people show up along with a make-up person. It is really a whirlwind.”

On day two, Reba and Jon left so thatCollette and Vern could go through theremodel by themselves. They critiquethe remodel based on how they feel thehomeowners spent their money. Then,Reba and Jon came back and wereshown clips of what Collette and Vernsaid about their new master bathroom.

“They are filming us watching thecomments,” Reba says. “Of course theywant us to agree or say ‘they’re crazy’ orgive some type of reaction. Of course,my husband is a big ham anyway,” shelaughs. “Then they pack up and leaveand you do not hear the results until yousee the show.”

On January 8, 2011, the Myers had abig party at their home to watch the pro-gram. And their friends found out at thesame time they did that Collette andVern felt Reba and Jon got the biggestbang for their buck.

“It was very rewarding to hear themsay we did a nice job,” Reba says. “Butit was just really fun to be involved withthe program. We had a great time.”

FINAL THOUGHTSReba offers the following advice to oth-ers considering a remodel: “Go withwhat you love and what you really want. There are tons of opinions out thereabout what you should do and what youshouldn’t do. Be true to yourself. Spendthe amount of money you want. Achievethe look and feel you want to achieve.”
