Birchwood is situated in the village and parish of Wilmington, in the Kent Borough of Dartford, enjoying an enviable position on Birchwood Road, with distant views of the Kent countryside. The parish is one of the largest in England and borders the London Borough of Bexley and the Sevenoaks District of Kent.

Part of the Joydens Wood Estate lies within the parish boundaries. This wood, dating back to 1600, is an Ancient Woodland Site and is one of over 1,000 woodlands in the United Kingdom looked after by the Woodland Trust. There are nine ponds within the wood each of which is a habitat for all three British newts.

Wilmington’s most prominent landmark is the St Michael and All Angels Church which dates from the Saxon times. In the reign of Edward IV, a manor house in the village was the residence of the king-making Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and in the 19th Century Wilmington was noted for being surrounded by gardens and cherry orchards. Wilmington is perhaps most famous for being the childhood home of Mick Jagger, lead singer with the Rolling Stones, and Keith Richards, guitarist with the Rolling Stones, attended school in the village.

Wilmington is close to three main shopping areas - Bexley, Swanley and Dartford. Bluewater Shopping Centre (in Greenhithe) is just under nine

miles from Birchwood and is Europe’s largest retail and leisure destination. Home to 330 of the best UK and international brands, 50 restaurants and bars and 13,000 free parking spaces. Bluewater also has a luxurious 13 screen multiplex cinema including state-of-the-art 3D screens.

There are three secondary schools within the parish: Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, which has engineering specialist status, Wilmington Grammar School for Girls, which specialises in mathematics and computing and Wilmington Academy which is a specialist centre of excellence for both business and vocational courses.

There is one primary school in the village and a nursery school is situated next to Wilmington Academy.

Birchwood Park Golf Centre is situated in the same road as Birchwood. The golf centre boasts an 18 hole, par 71 course and a 9 hole, par 28 short course which can be played in under 90 minutes. It also has a 41 bay covered driving range and putting and chipping greens. Horizones Health and Fitness Club can be found at the same location.

Wilmington Cricket Club has been part of the village for over 100 years and has had many successes, playing at Lord’s twice and winning many competitions.
