Bioprocess Engineering
Dimaano, Jezza B.ChE- 5201
What is Bioprocess Engineering? A specialization of chemical engineering that
deals with the design and development of equipment and process for the manufacturing of products from biological materials
It is the discipline that puts biotechnology into work
Biotechnology Is the use of living systems and organisms to
develop or make products, or “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use” (UN Convention on biological Diversity, Art. 2)
Karl Ereky Hungarian agricultural engineer Coined the term “biotechnology” in 1919
Steps in development of a complete bioprocess for commercial manufacture of a new recombinant-DNA-derived product
Microbiology It is the study of microscopic organisms, such as viruses,
bacteria, archaea, fungi and protozoa
Viruses-depend on the host cells that they infect to reproduce. When found outside of host cells, viruses exist as protein coat or capsid, sometimes enclosed within a membrane.
Capsid- protein shell of a virus. It encloses the genetic material of the virus
1898Friedrich Loeffler and Paul Frosch fround
evidence that the cause of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock was an infectious particle smaller than any bacteria.
Bacteria and archaea-fall into a category of life called
prokaryotes- are the only prokaryotes- earliest forms of life on earth
Notable Bacteria Bacillus anthracis
Causes anthrax, a deadly disease in cattle and a potential bioweapon against humans
Brucella abortus Causes breeding losses in livestock
Cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue green algae) Live in water, where they produce large amounts
of the oxygen we breathe
Escherichia coli (E. coli) Lives in the gut, where it helps digest food
and produces vitamin K. The bad strain of E. coli O157:H7 causes severe food borne sickness.
Deinococcus radiodurans Can withstand blasts of radiation 1, 000 times
greater than would kill a human being
Unit Operations Basic step in a process. It involves a physical change or
chemical transformation
Bioprocess A specific process that uses complete living cells or
their components to obtain desired products
Bioproducts Materials, chemicals and energy derived from
renewable biological resources
Bioproducts engineering engineering of bioproducts from renewable bioresources
Bioproducts engineers play a major role in the design and development of
“green” products including biofuels, bioenergy, biodegradable plastics, biocomposites, building materials, paper and chemicals.
develop energy efficient, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes for these products as well as effective end-use applications.
Emerging bioproducts biofuels, bioenergy, starch- based and cellulose- based
ethanol, bio- based adhesives, biochemicals, biodegradable plastics, etc.
Biosystems Engineering In USA
A field of engineering which integrates science and design with applied biological, environmental and agricultural sciences.
Represents an evolution of the Agricultural Engineering discipline to all living organisms but generally not including biomedical applications, which is the realm of biomedical engineering
In Europe A field of engineering which integrates engineering science
and design with applied biological and environmental sciences.
Represents an evolution of Engineering disciplines applied to all living organisms not including biomedical applications
