BIBLIOGRAPHY Ladakh and Kashmir September, 2014 Accompanied by Zara Fleming Guide Books and Travel Writings Lovell- Hoare, Sophie and Lovell-Hoare, Max Kashmir including Ladakh and Zanskar Bradt Guides due out July 2014 Though not out until next year. It might be worth pre- ordering the guidebook which is likely to be the best at the time of travel. As there are no really good current guidebooks we feel this will be the best at that time. Banerjee, Partha Ladakh Kashmir, Manali Milestone Himalayan Series 2008 The best current guide book. A bit heavy in places and not very good on practical matters but good photographs and maps. Harvey, Andrew A Journey in Ladakh (Mariner Books 2000). Written originally just after Ladakh opened in the 1970’s, so paints a purer picture of Ladakh than it is today. But he writes well and it gives a good introduction to Buddhism and travel through his eyes. History and Culture Ali, Tariq et al Kashmir – the Case for Freedom Verso 2011 The Kashmiri people's ongoing quest for justice and self-determination is as much ignored by their venal politicians as it is rejected by Pakistan. Internationally, their struggle is forgotten, as the West refuses to bring pressure to bear on its regional ally India. Harrer Heinich Ladakh: Gods and Mortals behind the Himalayas (1980). Very good introduction to the culture, religion and history but out of print and difficult to get hold of. Norberg Hodge, Helena Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh (Rider Books 2000). Excellent read about how the Ladakhis have always lived I harmony with their environment, nothing is wasted nothing thrown away. Met Helena there in the 70’s and she helped them set up solar power and other alternative energy sources. Pallis, Marco Peaks and Lamas Counterpoint 2004. Beautiful and beautifully written book, about Tibetan borderlands but a major part focuses on Ladakh. Rivzi, Janet Crossroads of High Asia. (Oxford University Press India 1999) Scholarly look at Ladakh and the importance of trade. Arts Ames, Frank Arts of Kashmir (Five Continents 2008) . Published in conjunction with the Asia Society's major international loan exhibition The Arts of Kashmir, this comprehensive catalogue by leading academics in the visual culture of Kashmir, explores Kashmir's rich artistic and intellectual ferment between the fourth and nineteenth centuries. Fisher, Rober Art of Tibet (Thames and Hudson 1997). Very good introduction (and goes into depth) on art of Tibetan Buddhism – i.e. Buddhism found in Ladakh with references to Alchi etc.

Groepper, Roger Alchi (Shambahla Press 1996). Brilliant but horribly expensive now! Pal, Pratapaditya A Buddhist Paradise: The Murals of Alchi (Visual Dharma Publications 1982) Very good and at a more reasonable price. Novels Thomas, Rosie Kashmir Shawl (Harper 2012) – ‘A superbly researched and vivid evocation of wartime Kashmir and Ladakh’ If books are hard to find you might try: John Randall (Books of Asia) Email:[email protected] www.booksofasia.com
