Concept: BiBle
This month kindergartners will hear Bible stories, sing songs, recall Bible verses, and participate in activities to discover that
they can learn from the Bible. Boys and girls will be given opportunities to develop skills to help them use the Bible to learn about God and Jesus. It is important for children to understand that the stories in the Bible are
true and to learn that the Bible contains God’s words.

Josiah, a king of Judah, came to the throne near 640 B.C. Beginning his reign at 8, he ruled Judah for 31 years. Read 2 Kings 22:1-7. Josiah might have known of former King Joash’s plan for refurbishing the
temple (2 Kings 12:4-16), and decided to follow through on the temple restoration project. Shaphan, the king’s scribe and treasurer, and Hilkiah, the high priest, oversaw the funds needed for the carpenters, builders, and brick masons to complete repairs. Read 2 Kings 22:8-13. Hilkiah and his workers discovered the Book of the Law. Some Bible teachers think the scroll was the Pentateuch,
the first five books of the Bible. Others identify the scroll as the single Book of Deuteronomy. Whatever its content, this scroll contained admonitions from God and God had preserved His Word. Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan. Shaphan read it and took it to the king. When Josiah heard the words of the scroll, how did he respond? The Bible had spoken to the young king, stirred his spirit, and prompted him to repentance. Read 2 Kings 22:14-20. Huldah informed Josiah’s representatives that the words of God’s judgment would come to pass. God’s people, stated Huldah, had abandoned their covenant with Him and had sought idols. God’s approaching judgment would not be stopped. However, God would spare Josiah from the coming calamity because the king’s heart was right toward God. Read 2 Kings 23:1-3. Josiah assembled religious leaders. The people living in Jerusalem were also summoned to the Temple. The words of the book were read to everyone. Standing before the people, Josiah pledged to follow the Lord, obey His commands, and serve God with all his heart. The people responded by making a recommitment to obey God’s covenant. We must do more than say we believe the Bible. We must also obey it and do what it requires. Ask God to show you how you need to renew your faith commitment with Him.

Make RepairsProvide toy tools, sandpaper, and blocks. Invite kindergartners to build a structure and then make repairs. As children work, tell the Bible story.
Encourage kindergartners to work together to put away materials and gather for group time. Play “Come and Hear My Story” (track 2) while children clean up the room.
Using PuzzlesAs you use puzzles in your classroom, consider the following tips:
➜ Place all pieces on the left. This trains a child to move her eyes and
hands from left to right as she completes the puzzle and develops a
valuable reading skill.
➜ Use the pieces in the block center. Puzzles that include people figures
can double as stand-up figures in the block center.
➜ Consider math opportunities. Ask: “How many pieces are in this puzzle?
How many pieces do we have left to complete the puzzle?”
➜ Solve the missing piece problem. When a piece is missing, cut craft foam
to fit the shape of the missing piece. Glue this into place on the puzzle
board. Store puzzles in large ziplock bags to help keep pieces together.
>> KiD ConneCtionSay: “You looked at some of the materials the
workers may have used to repair the temple. Is this
Bible story true?” (Yes. All stories in the Bible are true.)
Engage children in Group Time.
Connecting with Bible Truths in 15 - 20 minutes

Josiah (joh sIGh uh) was 8 years old when he became king. he loved God and wanted to obey him. The kings who lived before Josiah did not love God. They had not taken care of the temple. It was dirty and the walls and floors were crumbling. when he was older, King Josiah sent his helper, shaphan (shay fan), to see the priest, hilkiah (hil KIGh uh). shaphan told hilkiah, “Count the money the people have brought to the temple. Give it to builders and carpenters so that they can clean and repair the temple.” The men worked to clean the temple. They repaired parts of the temple that were broken. The workers found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time. hilkiah said, “we’ve found this Bible scroll.” he handed the scroll to shaphan. shaphan read the scroll. Then he took it to King Josiah. shaphan said, “The men were working in the temple. This lost scroll was found in the temple.” shaphan read some of the Bible scroll to the king. when King Josiah heard the words from the Bible scroll, he was sad and upset. “The words of this Bible scroll tell us what God wants us to do,” Josiah said. “we have not been doing these things. we have not been obeying God.”
Bible Story

The BibleKindergartners will discover that the Bible
is a book of true stories and unlike any
other book. They will learn that it contains
God’s words. From the Bible, they will
discover that they can find stories about
Jesus and learn about God.
Tip: Everyone’s BibleHelp the children realize the Bible is not just
a book for adults; it is a book for everyone.
Provide opportunities for children to
explore the Bible by looking at pictures and
finding words and verses.
Sing and Search the BibleGive each child a Bible. Talk about the difference between the New and Old
Testament. Encourage them to explore the Bible while singing: (tune: “Mary
Had a Little Lamb”)
“ Take a look in the New Testament, New Testament,
New Testament.
Take a look in the New Testament.
Tell us what you found.”
(Substitute “New Testament” for “Old Testament.”)
Kids and MissionsMy name is Abigail, but my friends call me
Abby. I have a younger sister named Chloe and
a dog named Saci (shot-see). When I grow up, I
want to be an animal rescuer. I think that I will
own a dog kennel so I can help dogs find good
homes.
My family lives in Budapest, Hungary.
My parents are missionaries. My dad learns
about different groups of people and figures
out which groups have never heard about
Jesus. My mom teaches English at church and
works with Hungarian women to help them
learn about the Bible.
Please pray for my family as we learn how
to speak a different language.

Play a GameGive each child a piece of paper and a pencil. Tell him to print his name on it, roll it to look like a
scroll, and tape the edge to hold it together. Collect and redistribute the scrolls. Tell the children
to sit in a circle. While playing upbeat music, announce
directions related to how they should pass the scrolls
such as pass it slowly, pass it to the child next to you,
switch seats and scrolls with a friend, pass it quickly,
pass it to the child across from you, and freeze. Stop the
music. Say: “If you received the scroll with your name
on it, stand up and say, ‘I found my lost scroll.’ ”
Do a CheerTeacher: (Point to self) I say Bible.

Say: “The Bible contains God’s words. We can
read Bible stories about God’s Son, Jesus.”
Count Backward(Hold up five fingers and lower one at a time.)
Five little Bibles, on a shelf by the door,
I gave one to my friend; now there are four.
Four red Bibles, filled with pictures you can see,
I gave one to my sister; now there are three.
Three little Bibles, all brand new,
I gave one to my neighbor; now there are two.
Two red Bibles, with stories about God’s Son,
I’ll give one to a friend. I’ll keep the last one.
Create a PostcardGive each child a large, unlined index
card. Provide markers, crayons, and
pencils for kindergartners to make a
picture for a friend on one side. Offer
to print the Bible verse on each child’s
card. Print the name of the friend the
card is for. Send home the cards with the
children. Say: “You can give this card to
your friend, or your mom can help you
address and mail it.” Mention that Paul
wrote God’s words in the Bible.
Practice Listening SkillsGuide kindergartners to sit in a semicircle around you. Give
one direction at a time. Allow time for the children to respond
to your instructions. Let them know that you will only say each
instruction one time. Instructions may include:
• blink your eyes five times
• clap your hands three times
• pat your head two times
• jump up and down
• sit with your legs crossed
• stomp your feet six times
• pass the teaching picture around the circle
• find a Bible

6 PrayPray: “Thank You, God, for the true stories in the Bible. Amen.”
7 Play in Bible-Learning ActivitiesExplain the following learning centers. Allow each child to select an activity. If there is time, he may move
to another one.
ADraw self-portraits. Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil. Say: “I wonder what you will look
like when you are 8 years old.” Talk about ways the children may change in appearance. Challenge the
children to each draw a picture of what she thinks she will look like when she is 8 years old. Mention
that Josiah was 8 years old when he became king.
BMove through an obstacle course. Print the words The Bible is true on a piece of paper and roll it up
to make a scroll. Use items in the room to set up an obstacle course. Children can walk on a taped line,
crawl around chairs, step on a scrap paper path, and end by finding the scroll.
C Hunt for books. Hide a variety of books around the room. Tell the children to find the books. Gather the
books. Read the titles and show some of the pictures. Talk about how these books are different from the
Bible. Show 2 Kings in the Bible. Refer to the picture on the Kindergarten Connection page and tell the
Bible story.
DBuild with blocks. Say: “Josiah sent builders and carpenters to clean and repair the temple. While they
were working, they found the lost Bible scroll.” Children can pretend to be builders and carpenters by
building a structure with blocks.
8 Clean UpTo the tune “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” sing:
“ I can help clean the room, clean the room, clean the room,
I can help clean the room, by *picking up blocks.”
*Substitute: throwing away trash, finishing the puzzles, putting up the markers.
9 Search the BibleWhile children wait for their parents, look through the Read to Me Bible for Kids. Identify the Bible story
pictures. Talk with them about their favorite pictures. Remind them that the stories in the Bible are true.
10 DismissDistribute the Kindergarten Connection weekly page. Make sure that the children get their personal
belongings and any take-home projects before leaving.
