Setting Out To Achieve - My documentary is setting out to explain to people who don’t know much or anything about

Bhangra, what it is, how it first started off and how it has developed since it has first started off. I will be explaining that to

my target audience which I have chosen for this documentary during pre production.

I am challenging – To explain what Bhangra is and what it is about, to my target audience that doesn’t know anything or

hardly anything on Bhangra so that would be a challenge I would like to overcome. My angle on this would be I would have

a history of Bhangra segment at the beginning of my documentary. I would be doing this by interviewing a Bhangra

specialist and would be explaining what is Bhangra in the interview with the specialist.

I am exploring – The history of Bhangra, how Bhangra music is produced in the studio and what instruments are used and

I would be looking to get a live play of a instrumental of a Bhangra song. I am also exploring how much money a specific

record label makes by having a interview with them and how much money the Bhangra industry roughly makes even though

piracy is on a rise. I am also exploring the Bhangra dance and how the first started off and originated and got more and

more popular.

I am investigating – The history behind the Bhangra industry, and how much money the Bhangra industry is roughly

making and how much money a specific record label is making through the sales of music albums, EP’s and singles of it’s

artists which the record label has signed. I am also investigating how the Bhangra dance first started off and how it has

developed since it first started off.

I am proving – That Bhangra is not a niche music genre anymore, but it is known worldwide and different ethnicities listen

to Bhangra except from the main ethnicity which is Asian who is the target audience of Bhangra music.

Page 3: Bhangra Treatment

TOPIC - My topic for my documentary is Bhangra, which is a niche music genre and is becoming more known and popular

worldwide each year with the music releases from the industry. There are regular album, EP and single releases from

different artists in the industry from different record labels such as Moviebox records and VIP records. Bhangra has been

around for quite a while now and it is known in various different countries around the world but I s still counted as a niche

music genre by many people.

ANGLE – The angles of my documentary are, the history of Bhangra, how Bhangra music is produced, and money in the

Bhangra industry which would also fit in with illegal downloading and how that has effected the Bhangra industry as well.

Another one of my angle is the Bhangra dance and how that first started off and developed.

Unique Selling Point – The unique selling point of my documentary is that, there isn’t many documentaries about

Bhangra which has looked into the history of Bhangra in detail which is one of my angles, my documentary is also original

has it covers ideas which nobody would normally look into if you would be making a documentary which are the “Money of

Bhangra” and “How the music is produced”.

Arguments & Debates – The arguments and debates around my chosen idea which my documentary will explore is

Bhangra still a niche music genre and the money which the Bhangra industry is making despite illegal downloading (Piracy)

getting worse and worse in the industry.

Age – The age will be 16-24 year olds as that is the ages which was given to me in the brief at the beginning of the unit . In my documentary I will be including vox pops from people from that age group as it would make my documentary appeal to them. I will also have an interview with a Bhangra vocalist from the age group given to me in my brief.

Gender - The genders which my documentary will be aimed it are both males and females as both males and females listen to Bhangra and my documentary will be appealing to both genders through the vox pops I will include in my documentary. I will also aim to make my documentary equal by including archive footage of both males and female Bhangra vocalists as this would make my documentary entertaining as well.

Location - The location for which my documentary will be aimed it is the whole of the United Kingdom as Bhangra is quite a well known music genre and people from all over the United Kingdom have heard of Bhangra before. Another reason why I have chosen the United Kingdom is because, two of my interviewee’s are based in Derby which is very well known for Bhangra and it’s artists which are located there.

Ethnicity – The ethnicities I have chosen to aim my documentary are all ethnicities but I would be looking it to aim it towards people from the ethnicities White and Black as my target audience from these two ethnicities will not have heard much or do not know anything about Bhangra whereas the majority of the Asian ethnicity will have heard and will know something about Bhangra.

Interests - Listening to music, going out with friends & family, Dj’ing at clubs & events, playing video games. I have chosen these as the key interests for my documentary because, my documentary has a segment about Bhangra music and my interviewee’s have DJ’ed at a club or at an event before and my target audience also like to do these things from my questionnaire which I conducted at the beginning of the unit.

Page 6: Bhangra Treatment

Ambitions = The ambitions of my target audience are to go to college, sixth form, university and once they have finished that to find a good job and also settle down which would aim towards the higher end of my target audience from the ages of 23 and 24. I would be interviewing a Bhangra vocalist who has recently finished university and has started his career in Bhangra earlier this year.

Employment/Education – The education for my target audience would be school, sixth form, college, university. The employment for my target audience would be that some of my target audience may have a job and some of my target audience may be unemployed. The disposable income for my target audience would be £30 - £500 a week depending on their education and employment status.

Opinions – My target audience believe Bhangra is not a mainstream music genre anymore and I will be doing this by speaking to famous well known Bhangra artists from all over the United Kingdom.

Existing Media Consumptions - All the BBC channels, Brit Asia, Zing, B4U Music and any other music channels the radio stations they would listen to would be BBC Asian Network, Kiss100 , Capital FM, Facebook & Twitter. These would be the sort of television channels, radio stations , websites and social networking sites my target audience would be interested in the most and that would appeal to them and you can also interact with their favourite celebrities.

Socio-Economic Group – E to B. E which is someone who does not have a job to B which is someone who is in middle management, professional worker such as a bank manager or a teacher in the socio economic group. This documentary will appeal to my target audience because, I will look to include vox pops from people from these socio economic groups.

Niche/Mainstream – Mainstream, as I feel Bhangra is more well known and people from other countries such as America, India and Canada will listen to Bhangra but I aiming my documentary to people in the United Kingdom.

Content Analysis

The three key findings for my documentary are facts and figures, expert opinions and what I can include in

my documentary (type of content). I have concluded these as my three key findings as they have helped me

a lot for what should be in my documentary. For facts and figures I have found about how many people

listen to Bhangra, and how many people roughly listen to BBC Asian Network. Expert opinions has helped

me because, famous celebrities have given their views on Bhangra and I will be looking to include that in my

documentary. I have got expert opinions from well known music producer Tru Skool and radio presenter

Bobby Friction. The type of content key finding has helped me find out what should be included in my

documentary such as what music I would be using and the different angles that would be included in my

documentary.

Focus Group

The three key findings for my documentary are people’s views on my documentary, the positive feedback

and the negative feedback. My audience’s (peoples) views on my documentary helped me because, they

told me what to include and what not to include in my documentary. The positive feedback from my focus

group also helped me because, they gave me a clear idea on what to keep in my documentary which will

make it a success. The negative feedback from my focus group also helped me because, they gave me a clear

idea on what parts I included in my documentary will not appeal to my audience and will not make my

documentary entertaining, or inform and educate my target audience as well as it should be.

Page 10: Bhangra Treatment

Questionnaires

The three key findings for my documentary are what the interests of my audience are, what Style they

would like my documentary to be and What content they would like my documentary to include. The

interests of my target audience really helped me because, it gave me an idea of how to make my

documentary more entertaining and appealing to my target audience which will make a documentary a

success. The style of my documentary also helped me because, once again it will suit my target audience and

I am creating my documentary so my audience enjoy my documentary. The content which be included in

documentary was based on my audiences interests and hobbies as I am looking to keep my audience

entertained while I am informing and educating them as well.

Textual Analysis

The three key findings for my documentary are, what shot types I can use, what type of music I can have in

my documentary and how should I present my documentary. What shot types I can use is a key finding

because, I knew how I could make my documentary different from other documentaries which would make

my documentary more unique as I would be using a wide range of different shots. The type of music which I

would include in my documentary would set the pace of my documentary depending on the types of music I

will include. The third key finding on how I should present my documentary I have looked at different

documentaries which are similar to mine.

Media Law

Copyright - Copyright is a legal concept, giving the creator of a piece (original) work exclusive rights to it.

Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work,

to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially

benefit from it and other related rights. This will affect my work because, I will be using archive footage in

my documentary and I will need to ask the permission of the person, group of people who the footage my

belong to. Another way copyright will affect my work is the music I will be using in my work as I will need the

permission of the artists/producers/record labels if I can use there work in my documentary as that will not

be breaking the copyright law.

Defamation - Defamation is a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that

may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image or a negative

name. Defamation will affect my work when someone may say something about another person in a way

which may offend them and defame the person, this will be most likely to happen either in a interview

which I am conducting or a vox pop which I may be conducting. One way defamation may affect my work is

“Jigsaw Identification” which is when someone/somebody only gives certain details but the viewers can

work out the identity of the person from the given details.

Page 14: Bhangra Treatment

BBC Ethical Code

Truth & Accuracy - The BBC want to find out the truth and make it as accurate as they can. They will get

different information together to find out the truth. This will effect my work because, if someone is not

telling the full truth then it can effect what I’m trying to put across about Bhangra.

Serving Public Interest – The public should know everything and the topic/subject might be something that

effects the public and may interest the public. It can effect my work when someone says something that can

effect what the public think of my documentary or about a certain topic/person.

Editorial Integrity & Independence - The source should be independent and nobody else should have any

say on the programme or tell anyone else what has to be done. This can effect my work when someone else

wants a say on what I should be filming and what I should include in my documentary.

Privacy - A conversation, behaviour or information about someone or a group of people should not be told in

the programme unless it will effect the public in any way. This will effect my work if someone says something

that is not meant to be said and meant to be kept private.

Impartiality & Diversity Of Opinion - This cannot be biased which means one sided and both sides of a story

should always be shown with different opinions about the topic. This will effect my work when I am asking

my vox pops as somebody can give a biased opinion about Bhangra.

Page 15: Bhangra Treatment

Ofcom Law

Reconstructions - When something is reconstructed to show to the audience of a television show.

Crimewatch is an example of a show. This can affect my work because, if I do include a reconstruction and it

is not accurate it can mislead my target audience of my documentary.

Potentially Offensive Material - There should be nothing that can offend anyone such as, strong language,

violence, sexual violence, explicit sexual portrayal etc. must always be justifiable by the context. This can

effect my work because, if I add any footage in I will know it will be “potentially offensive material” and

people will be offended by it and I know what “potentially offensive material” is.

Criminality - Programs should not encourage crime or any kind of criminal activity. No payment should be

made to anyone who has been convicted or confessed criminals or anyone close to them unless it is justified

by the public interest. This can effect my work because, if I was going to include anything to do with

criminality I could be given a fine and if I know the rules I know what to include in my work and what not to

include in my work.

Page 16: Bhangra Treatment

BudgetHypothetically I was given a total of £7,500 to spend on my documentary and out of the money given I have £3,640 left over

to use if I needed to use it in case something does go wrong and I have not gone over the given budget. Hypothetically I

have spent £3,860 on my documentary, this was most spent on my travel costs to interview my interviewees and the

equipment which I would need for my documentary such as the I-Mac and the softwares for the I-Mac.

However the REAL budget for my documentary would be mostly spent on travel costs as I would be travelling to the

following locations;

• Birmingham (Handsworth, Smethwick)

• Derby

• London (Royal Albert All)

• Southall Broadway

My documentary would provide a good value more money because, I would be interviewing the best Bhangra music

producers and artists and upcoming Bhangra music producers and artists and I would also interview an expert in Bhangra

history.

Distribution & Exhibition

My programme will enable the BBC to fulfil it’s ethos of inform, educate

and entertain because, my documentary will be informing, educating and

entertaining my target audience.

Page 17: Bhangra Treatment
Page 18: Bhangra Treatment

My programme will be aired on BBC 3 and on a Thursday at 8pm as it would be a good time to air my programme on and the

shows it would be competing with would be DIY SOS: The Big Build on BBC 1, MasterChef: The Professionals on BBC 2,

Emmerdale on ITV 1, Kevins Grand Designs on Channel 4 and Fairground Attractions on Channel 5

Page 19: Bhangra Treatment

1) Brit Asia TV – UK Bhangra Culture -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIqOq7BAbxk

It is competing for the same audience because, it is aimed at younger people

from the ages of 14-28. Another reason it is competing with the same audience

is because the interests of the target audiences are the same.

My programme will be different from this programme because, I will look at

different parts of the Bhangra industry in one documentary (different angles)

such as the money behind the Bhangra industry and the history.

2) MTV – MTV Live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2OHRRO1LlI

It is competing with the same target audience with me because, it is a music

documentary and shows performances live from different music artists and

bands.

My programme will be different from this because, I will have facts and figures

in my documentary and not just live performances.
