Welcome to Oakham 2015It’s the start of a new year and this is our first careers event of 2015! As always we expect a great turnout and we have some brilliant companies lined up to exhibit.

Today’s event is about bringing the Armed Forces Community together with the commercial world and facilitating one-to-one engagement with a wide range of exhibitors who are not only keen to attract potential employees, but also to promote interest in training opportunities. They are also here to offer a wide range of transition/resettlement advice and support to all attendees, whether you are a Service Leaver, Veteran, Reservist or family member; there is something here for you.

BFRS events provide great platforms for personnel to embrace the employment and training opportunities available to you, plus a variety of resettlement help, support and advice including CV-writing assistance.

Whether you are just starting to consider your next career move, your departure from the Military is imminent, you have already left, or you are a Reservist, we urge you to take full advantage of the expertise and networking opportunities available through BFRS and our career events.

This event is a great opportunity to build your network – so please leave all your reservations at the door and approach as many exhibitors as you can to get the most out of the day.

Thank you and enjoy today’s event.

Get the Most from Today’s EventToday’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to Civilian life. These include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

If you’re not sure where you want to work or what you want to do when leaving the Forces, a careers fair can introduce you to a range of possibilities. Before you engage exhibitors in conversation, get at least some idea of what they do. Keep a copy of the event guide with you for reference and chat to someone on the BFRS stand if you need a bit more guidance.

For most Service Leavers this will be new, so if you’re nervous, see this as an opportunity to practise speaking to hiring managers. Try and step outside your comfort zone by setting a personal target: identify two or three employers you want to speak to and prepare some questions beforehand.

After the event, make time to digest all the information you’ve gathered. Think about how you will use this to focus your search or enhance your applications.

Aim to get the contact details of people you have met. They can form part of your network not just for the immediate, but also for the long-term future.

If you think of a question later, contact the person you met to find out if they can help.

Most of all, have fun! Today is about enjoying yourself, meeting many new people and finding new career and training opportunities that may lead to long-term careers. Have fun, be confident and approach any and all exhibitors that take your interest!

Top 10 CV TipsBy CareerMaster4Military

Sian Richardson, founder of Careermaster4military.co.uk, is a former military spouse with over 25 years’ experience in HR, recruitment and senior management positions with FTSE 100 companies. She has read and written hundreds of CVs and works closely with Service Leavers, veterans, their spouses and partners to support them in securing their next role.

1 Keep it relevantIf it isn’t relevant, leave it out! The objective of your CV is to secure an interview for the job you want. It’s not a biography of your life but a marketing document, to sell your skills, qualifications and experience. All the information you include should tell the reader why you are the ideal candidate for that specific job – no more, no less.

2 Tell them what they need to knowThere’s no such thing as a generic CV. Each CV you send out should be specifically written to target the vacancy you’re applying for or the type of role you want. If you don’t know what job that is yet, there’s little point writing your CV! Ask us for some career coaching to help you discover the right job for you, first.

3 Keep it neatHow your CV is presented and how it is written reflects on you. Nobody will want to read an untidy CV where key information is hard to find. It will only end up in one place – the shredder! A well presented and well written CV, where the information the recruiter needs to know stands out clearly, is significantly more likely to win you an interview.

4 Ready for my close-upUnless you’re applying for a job in modelling, where your appearance is vital, or you fancy your chances on the big screen, keep the mug-shots for your mum’s album, not your CV.

In the majority of cases, your appearance doesn’t matter in determining whether you have the experience and skills to do the job.

Page 14: BFRS Oakham 2015 Event Guide

14 Fe a t u r e s

5 Does size matter?Look, this is one myth we can bust today! There’s no hard and fast rule about a CV being no more than two pages. More important than size is content – content is king! The CV should be as long as is it takes to tell the reader what they need to know.

6 Making an impactFrom the first line to the last line, your CV should build a picture in the recruiter’s mind of you as the ideal candidate and someone they want to meet and find out more about.

Lay the foundations and make an immediate impact up-front in the professional profile section by telling them why you are their ideal candidate. Back this up with a clear list of your key skills, reflecting those in the job specification.

7 Mind your languageYour communication skills will be assessed from the email you send, the calls you make, the cover letter you submit and, of course, from your CV. Get any of these wrong and you may not have the chance to demonstrate your verbal communication skills at interview.

8 Play the numbers gameRecruiters and employers love numbers – oh yes they do! Numbers show the size and scope of both the organisations you’ve worked for and your job. They can quantify your achievements, highlighting how good you are at what you do in comparison to other applicants.

9 Leave it out, mate!Unless specifically requested in the job advert, there are things you should leave out such as nationality, date of birth and marital status.

10 Keep it updatedReview and update your CV on a regular basis, adding new skills, qualifications, training courses, CPD (continuing professional development), new jobs or projects, and achievements.

Using a Recruitment CompanyWhile support is available for personnel leaving the Military, have you considered using the services of a recruitment company? As part of the second-largest recruitment company in the world, Randstad CPE outlines here the benefits and process for finding work through a recruitment company. This is the first of seven articles which will appear with BFRS throughout 2015.

While the quality of service will vary from different companies, the recruitment industry itself is highly regulated, with strict government rules and operating regulations. Recruitment services are free for candidates – it is illegal for a recruitment company to charge a candidate a registration fee for work finding services, but security checks, DBS checks, training and so forth may incur a charge. A recruitment fee is paid to the recruitment company from the client when a candidate is successfully engaged.

As a limited and private sector company we supply permanent, temporary and fixed-term staff worldwide.

Benefits of using a recruitment company ▪ It is free for you to register.

▪ Jobs advertised will be live client requirements.

▪ Consultants are sector specialists and experts at matching candidates and skills.

▪ Consultants will work with you to find the right job, give advice and guidance, and negotiate terms on your behalf.

▪ Temporary working is a way to build on experience while looking for the right permanent role.

How to find vacanciesFirstly, understand what makes you stand out from other candidates and have an up-to-date CV and certificates. Conduct a job title and location search on the internet which will deliver multiple results from vacancy websites, recruitment companies, employers, online media etc. Due to confidentiality, not every vacancy is advertised and CVs sent to a specialist recruiter direct may also be beneficial.

Page 17: BFRS Oakham 2015 Event Guide

17

CV submission and application is usually online via the web advertisement. The consultant will receive the CV and check suitability. If appropriate, an in-depth interview will be conducted and, if suitable, the candidate will be asked if they wish to be put forward to the client.

The recruitment consultantTraining will have been given to perform their role effectively including market knowledge, understanding the recruitment process, reading and matching CVs, legislative, industry and sector knowledge, and negotiation skills. Having a sales role with personal targets, consultants work many hours to speak to and qualify candidates on a client’s behalf. A quality service reaps repeat business rewards and future recommendations. Randstad CPE consultants hold a number of quality industry certificates, awards and memberships.

Shoreland NDT AcademyShoreland NDT Academy opened on the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate to train people in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and is one of only eight centres in the UK to be accredited by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT).

A common practice in both onshore and offshore engineering, NDT is the term given to analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of metal without causing any damage. The academy is the brainchild of Shoreland Access’s Directors, who were keen to build on the back of Shoreland’s success in the NDT inspection industry.

Founded in 2012, Shoreland has experienced considerable growth in a short space of time. Directors Neil Cox along with father and son team, Ken and Jack Miles, felt there was a gap in the market in the North East for a new NDT training centre.

Director Neil Cox said at its opening: “North Tyneside and the North East are home to several large companies in the engineering, chemical and energy sectors. We also have a large contingent of offshore workers based in the area. Shoreland has the potential to fill a gap for NDT training needs for companies and technicians alike.”

NDT is a very popular career for ex-Forces personnel, which is why Shoreland NDT Academy are working closely with BFRS to reach out to this target market.

The purpose-built training facility boasts two classrooms, two practical areas, an exam room and breakout area. With excellent transport links to Newcastle Central Station and Airport, the centre has the potential to attract students from further afield.

They are now also offering two PCN accredited training courses per week, which range from conventional NDT techniques to those a little more complex.

Some of the courses available include:

▪ Ultrasonic Testing

▪ Magnetic Particle Inspection

▪ Dye Penetrant Inspection

▪ Phased Array

▪ Eddy Current

▪ Weld Inspection

▪ Radiographic Interpretation

For more information on courses available, email [email protected] or call 0845 2571204.
